UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

The only solution that makes any sense to me (still) is that the UP is a key to the markings on the UA.

The UA has 2 different sequences of lights that have 1-4 lights in each row.

[great gallery from someone showing the 2 sequences clearly]
http://imgur.com/gallery/CBRTS

The sequences seems to be (roughly):
1-1-3-3-1-3-3-3-3-4-3-1 (or 3?)
1-1-3-2-1-3-1-1-1-2-1-1
[TOP<---->BOTTOM]

Note:
- there is no zero, so a direct mathematical interpretation would be 'hard' to understand.
- there is only one '4', which would be unusual if this has a mathematical purpose.
- the binary interpretation of the UP matches that range (1-4, no zero).

Well, you could interpret the left-hand image as a UA, with the rings off it being something emitted by the UA, such as light or sound.

Then the sphere image could be simply saying "this is a 3D co-ordinate system", with the quadrants indicating which co-ordinate corresponds to which part of the sequence.

Something the UA does four times maybe? Or break the two sequences you have up into two or four?

If you write them as binary they're 9 or 18-bits each, which is a bit weird, but necessary if you want numbers >256 like 360...?

Report from ET;

I have gone to a few of the systems listed by the CMDR who claimed to find a UP.
Of the ones I could get to most were single star systems that were alone, or had no landables.

Of the rest they would not resolve in the galaxy map, so I'm unsure if there is a typo or something. (Yes I double checked my spelling, I know how to search for systems) but they seem to be unavailable to me due to this.

Will hang around here a little longer.

Facts:

Unknown entities:

Artefact.
Currently found in 'the shell',135 -150 light years, around Merope system. They appear to point to Merope. When Artefacts are in Merope they appear to point to the main star.
They emit a signal that contains a vector picture of a ship (not sure what happens if more than one ship are equal distance from it and arrive at same time - probably not relevant) - The picture / transmission is the purpose of the Artefact ( as per FDev comments ) When sold in 'large numbers' to stations, the stations suffer numerous system failures.

Probe.

Currently found with in Ross 47 , G 99-49 , WOLF 294 ,WOLF 504 systems, found in USS. (Dev at Lave con mentioned there is easier ways to find them - currently unknown )

Carried by Military Transport, python. Python has chatter about testing. Probe seems to point towards Merope. When in Merope system it appears to point to Merope 5 c. When scanned with an Advanced, Intermediate and Basic Discovery Scanner, the probe emits a signal that disables some ship systems (if that ship is too close / close enough). Spectral analysis of the signal reveals an image. Testing in various locations so far has not changed the image.

The direction both are pointing in is deliberate [ As per FDev comments ]

Both the artefact and probe look similar and sound similar. They both have a visual distortion around them, and have 'sparkles of light around them. They also both flash / pulse with light while emitting the noise / signal.

Both the probe and artefact may or may not come from the same location and or species which is currently unknown.

Barnacles.
Found on planets within nebulae. They emit a noise, which as of yet has no determinable meaning. They also have sparkles of light around them. They have meta-alloys (and now materials) in the spikes which can be harvested.
Meta-Alloys can be sold to stations. If sold to stations suffering malfunctions due to Unknown Artefacts being sold there, the stations can repair themselves somehow.
They can be scanned with a SRV and the collected data can be sold.

Possible clue(s)

Newsletter refers to it possibly being 'a key'. Fdev have not yet denied this is a clue.
Chatter refers to NHE-17 and just NHE. (possible meaning - Non Human Entity)
Chatter refers to orbital testing.
Tip Off Missions reveal messages which infer being attacked by unknown craft, or encountering something highly unusual. So far these have been located in various locations within the human bubble. Reports can include reference to lights / noise [Thanks Alec Turner for reminding me]
Jaques Station had reported numerous problems while in witch space.

The current mystery around the Unknown entities is space based.[ As per FDev comments ]
The next part is in game to be discovered / found / worked out. [ As per FDev comments ]

Possible hypotheses:

If it is a key, what sort of key? A physical key, a map key, a data key? Possibly others. A key does not usually change shape because it would then not fit the lock it was designed for. A map key would imply there is a map where these symbols / glyphs / images can be seen. A data key implies that the information contained within the image can be uses for decrypting some form of data (sound/light/writing/etc).

If it is a 'report' of something it has scanned, what use is it? A report may contain items of data like 'current location' 'findings' etc. Since the image doesn't change when the probe is scanned in different locations 'current location' may not be included. If 'current location' isn't included why not? Perhaps the probe only reports to ships near it, thus current location is not needed. Or it only transmits a different image when it 'finds' something it's programmed to look for, if anything.

Possible actions.

Continue to look for Rocking Horse Poop, sorry, Unknown Probes.
Take probes to various locations either selected randomly or with specific goals in mind and scan them. Note and record results if possible, with screenshots and or video/audio records.

Attempt to find a map with these symbols on it. Then decipher the map. And the key.

Attempt to find some kind of encoded information that can be unlocked with the image or the audio.

Attempt to decode flashing lights.

Attempt to decode the glyphs in the image in the hope they are co-ordinates to something else.

Sell lots of Unknown Probes to stations to see what happens.

------------------

I haven't got a clue how to proceed in a logical manner from this point without any further data. This isn't meant to be a post about "hey this is all true and we must do this" it's more, here we are, these are my musings. Please feel free to add, disagree, or ignore me ;)

Excellent synopsis - for those of us struggling to keep up ... thanks for posting!

Re: the following ...

Might be worth mentioning that the tips (and indeed some of the quotes from Jaques) repetedly refer to sound/noise.

REPORT FROM ELEPHANT'S TRUNK SECTOR.

I have to disapprove the above qouted postulate.

I am in ET and have been there for countless hours trying to find USS.
I found and entered all the systems of the Reddit CMDRs flight log.
The systems do exist but so far I only found wrecks with survey data.

After the Reddit CMDR narrowed the search in by answering a reply on Reddit we should now be looking for an USS to pop up near a landable planet in a system with an orange star.

The systems that best fit this description and are right next to his proposed system ending with D20 are the systems D18 and D19.
I did not manage to have any USS pop up near landable planets in these systems so I hereby encourage anyone in ET to keep looking near landable planets in the D18 and D19 systems.

Will head over there now and see what I can do. I am still having no luck finding those other planets on his list but I accept that is some weird issue on my end and not with that guy's data.

I've been able to find every system in the image via search. Make sure the first O is an o and the second 0 is a zero.

DL-Y D19 has a few landables...two are even around an orangy type star. All I've found is a small survey cache so far however.

As I said I was inputting it correctly, it just wasn't searching.

I have now been able to find them. Not the first bug I've had with the search bar of late lol

Currently in D19, at the planet A4.

hoping some USS pop up in the time I had left before work. 90 minutes should be enough haha

While I find myself enjoying this mystery I also find myself cursing Frontier. From a pure game play perspective ie not using external tools, there should be some way to gain more information or insight to this dilemma.

For example:

A pilot notices a military convoy with an Unknown Probe in one of the ships cargo holds.

The Military Transport ( A python ) has some semi unique comms chatter

Pilot chooses to follow the Python to see where it goes, it jumps system and player follows it there. [New system - Wolf 1453]
Some more comms chatter (not unique).
It then heads towards a station. [Station name - Akers Gateway (not sure of spelling)]
It then appears to drop out at the station (player suffered a crash to main menu at that point).

Whether or not it was going to do orbital testing there or not is up for the usual internet jury to decide, but I personally doubt it.

My main point being that if the NPC is saying the things it does, it should actually do what it's saying. Otherwise players will essentially ignore NPC chatter for being meaningless.

Since Unknown Probes are currently rarer than rocking horse poop, no testing can be done with regards to said planet / station.

Long story short: Frontier, if these things are just tidbits of info, that's great but rephrase the chatter to make more in game sense. ie if the ship is not going to the designated co-ordinates, don't tell us they are.

It is now time for me to remind you all of this 'cause you are all frustrated and reasons :)

In the beginning we had just as little information to go by about the UA. It was also at first discovered in transports who chattered useless stuff.

Then after an update to the game the UA was found free floating.

Patience dear CMDRs. The time will come and with it resolve. History tells us that FDev love to see our reactions to certain game content, they will stitch some new game content together accordingly and release it/smuggle it in with an update.

Be cool - be arctic cool - be arctic ;-)

Agreed. This stuff will be figured out eventually. A lot of people only popped in when the UA was first discovered and then later when Barnacles were thought (and later found) to be a thing.
There is nothing wrong with the complexity of this puzzle. People just don't realise how much hard work has gone into the previous steps.

Hang on a minute, it could be something incredibly simpler...

I cant try this as going on holiday

Overlay the probe message over the map of merope showing known barnacles. This fits in with the idea that the UA points to the system and the UP shows where the barnacles can be found within that system . It also fits in with the 'key' theory.

If correct, taking it to another nebula or system with known barnacles then scanning it may reveal all other barnacles. This fits in with a 'purpose' and also with Michaels cmoments of ' that's a testable theory '.

If this establishes it's purpose of locating alien anomalies then it could follow that it could also be used to scan for crashed alien ships etc etc

Any codes would be most likely octal, not our human base10, so some conversion may be required.
