They always looked like placeholders to me; as if we were supposed to have detailed planetary imagery in the middle and the arcs were for dramatic effect.

Yeah. I've always thought the same. But maybe they are slightly significant? Maybe once we get an idea what they mean, we'll finally get planetary mapping!! Or.. its just cosmetic. We will never have planetary mapping.... :(

Hello folks; I think I may have solved (a big part of) this UP image mystery: It's a system scanning probe.

While listening to Vent Aileron's recordings of the UP, I noted the high-low chirps, and the patterns therein. From the UP I noted the following purrs, and compared them to knowledge of Merope (where the recording was taken) to draw the following theories.

1 instance of 110. There is 1 main star in Merope.
7 instances of 010. 7 atmospheric worlds in Merope (top left quadrant of UP spectro)
6 instances of 011. The icon indicates ringed worlds; there are 6 in Merope.
3 instances of 001 The line drawn in bottom right indicates binary pairings, a line connecting them. There's 3 in Merope.
1 instance of 101. There is 1 asteroid belt in Merope.
2 instances of 100. There are 2 barnacle worlds in Merope, indicated by the bottom left "spikes" on the sphere.

It is my belief the probe scans systems. Of course, it was all in the name all along.

Theoretically I guess the UP is able to use / read the information from our ADS? Since it only activates after we honk.

2 races of aliens....

The UPs tech from the (hunters) aggressive race are searching for the barnacle owners.

The barnacle tech from (hunted) passive race are seeding/terraforming.

They roll into our galaxy full scale war. Who wins the humans decide?

Best of both worlds for the community..... I hope. Lol

I've listened to Vent's audio files, as linked from the front page.

My transcription of the Merope audio:

-|-||--|--|--||-|--||-||--|-||-|-|-|--||--|--||--||--|-|--||-|--|

Having more trouble with the audio from NGC 2546 Sector CR-U D3-29 because of the contents:

First deployment:

????|--|-|-|--||-||--||-||-||--||-|-|-|--|||-|

Second deployment:

???||-|--||-|-|-||--||--|-|--||-||--||-|

After honk:

|--|--||--||--||--||--||-|-|--|-|--||--||-||--||

The ? refers to tuba tuning.

If someone has a UP, I'd like to get some audio files (with music off please!!!!) of UPs in deep space around Merope (again, yes), and three other systems of your choice, with multiple recordings of each (feel free to move or stay still at your pleasure) please.

For those without UPs, listen to the audio and transcribe it yourself, and let's compare notes. Try not to follow along with my transcription, make your own.

Your Merope interpretation is missing a bit I think.

Oh wow, that is smart. Maybe it's probing US after we ADS it, and then sending the information we have back to its masters!

Not quite; my understanding is that it makes noises regardless of ADS activation. It only transmits the key image when you ADS it.

There's also some irony in that a probe that discovers things activating when you scan it with a... discovery scanner.

Is it worth people checking these stations/ systems out if not already doing so. Surely if these systems are continuing to have problems it may suggest something is still relevant here?

Meanwhile, the following starports continue to experience technical issues:
Lave Station, Lave
Carter Port, Rhea
Kooi Gateway, G 190-28
Ising Dock, 109 Piscium
Jaques Station, Eol Prou RS-T d3-94
Robigo Mines, Robigo
Skvortsov Orbital, 63 G. Capricorni
Saunders's Dive, Wolf 1301
Alexander Freeport, HIP 18843
Bloch Vision, Loperada

Entirely possibly! Please transcribe it yourself, and post for comparison.

Mine is actually two longer than Dreadp1r4te's, I hear an extra -|- on the front (which would account for our missing "unsuitable body" - Merope itself), but don't hear the final - that they do.

View my theory on the previous page. The probe communicates using sound. When you honk it, you create a feedback issue that causes an EMP burst because you are scanning the probe scanning you and the environment back and forth etc. The emp affects the probe and it has to reboot. In this reboot sequence, it has to reprogram itself with the legend so it knows what to look for and how to interpret the data to broadcast. Because it communicates and acts through sound ( chirps, sonar scanner, spectral image), it has to broadcast the spectral image to "tune" itself and relearn so to speak.

Edit: found the word im looking for. It has to recalibrate. Much like radars have to be calibrated for the first time and every now and then.

Just a quick response to multiple CMDRs here.. Please be aware that you CANNOT turn off ambient music. If you mute music, you will still get the ambient music through the sound effects portion of the audio. It can't be turned off without turning off the other sound effects anymore. So some of this audio is as clean as its going to get. Most of the recordings are with normal music off already.

Good job being thorough. I'm fairly certain the message does not repeat verbatim; i.e., you're going to hear each character in a difference sequence each time. This is what stumped me for so long, I spent a long while looking for repetition on whole rather than individual character repetition.

I don't have access to the audio right now, but your interpretation for Merope seems to fit: 7xAtmosphere, 6xRings, 3xBinary Pairs, 2xBarnacles

Two things here:

1. This theory makes the most sense of any I've seen so for.
2. I don't like it.

I'm not sure why, it just seems off to me. I guess it could be right, but I have to ask, "Why". Why would it do that? Maybe I am just hoping for more from the probe. Specifically with the possibility of it being the "key". I'm really hoping it isn't just the key to representing the system it's in.

Regardless, great work putting together this theory. I love how the community responds to this kind of stuff.

Heh, just realized the probe is the aliens version of universal cartographics, but without having to risk their lives or time to obtain the info.

Food for thought. There is a system that we have explored but we missed something that the probe can see.

Yeah I'm just collecting data, I actually wonder if the ordering itself is meaningful; like it chatters away about bodies in the system, but in a way that you could listen to it and understand which direction to head?

Makes sense alongside the UA- it's just a raw data gathering probe, looking at stuff and sending back the info. And, it has almost no use to us, except that we can maybe hijack it to find barnacles -slightly- more easily.
