No, no one has ever thought of that in 70,000+ posts you are the first. Previously we've always been dropping it from the same side of Merope how could we have been so blind.

5598 posts, def not 70000... Plus I didn't see anything about it on the FP. I've also never had reason to go past Merope. Snippy. [yesnod]

Well, its pretty obvious isn't it?

If the probe wails around planets with barnacles, then you can use it to trace back where the barnacles came from! (Even if they are unrelated to the UP story)

Soooo... If someone has an awful lot of time on their hands a UP and a resistant cargo hold then they are all set! (((-;

Good luck!

That sounds horribly tedious.... For once I'm glad I don't have a UP.

After some googling it turns out there is a very common binary code schema that does not have more than 2 consecutive 1's or 0's
(as we see in the UP tuba data stream). It's call Manchester Code. And was used by Voyager 1.

Good call.

01 = 0
10 = 1

May explain why it's not repeating.

All planets, I think.

Not stars and deep space.

Don't know about stations.

As someone pointed out, it looks like it wails around life, e.g. Earth, where there are no barnacles.

I have stepped on a few. :)

That it would be. But it's possible. Getting to the core in a sidey is possible too. But I ain't gonna do it. Takers?

I'd recommend to someone crazy enough to try it - that is - to use a UPs life detection ability to try and team up with someone else with a UP. Get on out there, and locate the source of the barnacles. Pretty soon. Because we don't know how long we will have them for.
At each probable planet in a system you will have to drop the UP and listen to it...

I'm sure the canonn will provide free whiskey and biscuits.

I'm sorry Allant. I respect you and your work here is beyond dispute, but I have to disagree with this...
Given that I ... often post ''morning, anything new?'' posts, I would just like to say that my reasoning is that this is a community. I like to post here to talk to people. When I asked what had changed, somebody provided me with the only specific post that was relevant and I went back and looked. No need to read ALL the pages.
Let me correct that for you. "No need for *you* to read ALL the pages." But you don't mind forcing the hundreds of contributors to this thread and however many lurkers are following this thread having to read yours and any replies to your request. What if all the contributors to this thread did this every day? It would fill several pages, and would not advance things one iota.

I believe that you yourself have previously advocated how ideas need to be exchanged here. The only way that can happen is if people actually bother to read other peoples posts. Right at the moment there is a pretty low signal-to-noise ratio. You are in no way the worst offender, but I just wanted to back up others that have expressed similar sentiment. If it continues this way, people will stop following the thread, and the idea exchange will be reduced to a handful of contributors, reducing the likelihood of a solution.

While I'm here, I'd request HBosch stops reposting the same thing over and over. People have looked, and replied. There is nothing there. Why would there be letters and numbers and a month (written in English, regardless of our multicultural player base) if the more obvious part of the message is restricted to dashes and bars. And regarding the faces: The human brain is conditioned to recognise faces, and often does so when there is no face. As Allant told you, it's paredoila.

Its important to remember that the UP was wailing around earth. It wails in orbit of planets that contain life, life includes barnacle presence. <- Science done on educating ed.
Interesting. So I wonder if we can use the technology in the probe to modify our Detailed Surface Scanner to detect life on planets. Future Engineer mod? Is this the purpose of the probe?

Hmmm.... following Manchester Code has led me down the rabbit hole now :)

And look...You don't have to do it forever...if we have a rough vector to follow, then that is a hell of a lot more than we have at the moment. One could go to the California nebula, one in the Pleiades and we could triangulate.

If anyone wants a system that is close to Merope and only has a single star - 73 Pi Tauri

Would be a little ironic to use it as a testing ground since someone was doing some wild hypothesising in the previous thread and somehow came up with a PLANET in 73 Pi Tauri as the answer lol.

Well according to the spreadsheet, nobody has shot the UP. That would have been the first thing I'd have tried after seeing how it reacted with a UA nearby.

It's not on the spreadsheet but I did it a few times with lazors, without harming the UP too much...
