Space legs and talking to npcs

So with character creation and potentially space legs coming i cant help but wonder how fdev will handle talking to npcs.

Will communications be text based? - im not sure id like this. It can be explained away as ship comms but standing in front of someone doesnt feel right.

Will it be repeated lines? - this tends to get boring fast unless there are millions of variations which seems improbable.

Of do you think fdev will come up with something new like a text to speech model with procedural text? It doesnt seem miles out of reach. Google seem to have a pretty good tts.

What are eveyones thoughts on how they might go about it?

It will be text based i would think. Maybe have an option for text to speach if they have it. How they do the text though is the question. Will be interesting to see how they go about it. Could be speach bubbles or something like that. Difficult to tell.

They can hire linguistics to invent a whole new alien language just for the game. Nobody has ever thought of such a thing* and it will be revolutionary

*This is not true.

Thats my worry the game is so focussed on immersion walking up to an npc at a bar and some random text box pops up would be an immersion killer for me.

Not that i have any great way to fix it!

Yep. Typical conversation. Insert your side of it anywhere.

"You look like you can handle yourself."

Thanks! Why do you have those weird tattoos on your neck?

"Sorry, I thought you were someone else."

You will find your mommy someday.

"I'll be watching you."

Look, I'm in a relationship with a Lavian, sorry.

"All that tasty cargo."

Don't eat biowaste, it will kill ya!

I think you're getting waaaaaay ahead of yourself.

Probably but im not really sure what we would do walking around stations if theres no one to talk to and it has been suggested space legs could be season 3 so it's not completely out of question

It happens on the forum alot.
The funniest ones are when they worry in future tense.

Just a little early is all. I'm sure they have a cunning plan.

I know. I really can't think of anything else at the moment. I am pretty sure space legs will be coming in 3.0 in a limited way. Probably restricted to your ship at first or maybe some limited areas of the stations as well. So I think we will find out soonish.

I should've gone with

Title "why im leaving ed"

Post "because i dont like getting modular terminals for marco FD are unable to implement conversations properly and therefore im leaving in preperation.

I have spent 6886545886 days playing this game and my leaving will cause instant financial ruin to frontier."

Talk to NPC? will be very simple

ctrl-shift-A: attack my target
ctrl-shift-D: disengage
ctrl-shift-R: return to formation
ctrl-shift-D: dock in hangar
ctrl-shift-R: release wingman

...... and so on

I didn't see the poll. We need another one for serial threatening to leave, but staying around.

Honestly, I think it would be fun to have NPCs chattering to each other even if most of it is nonsense. It certainly leads to endless entertainment in Earth Defense Force.

NPC1: "Why did you join the EDF?"
NPC2: "I've got a nice steak dinner waiting at home!"
NPC1: "It was a nice town, until you showed up!"
NPC3: "I forgot my magazine!"
NPC2: "That is correct."
NPC3: "Why did you get married?"
NPC1: "To protect the Earth!"
NPC4: "Attack!"
All NPCs: "EDF! EDF! RAAAAAAAAH!"

It's a very fine balance between game mechanics and time to develop it. If you make a system that use voice, there can only be so much variation.
Check out Skyrim and the witcher games. They are both very immersive RP games, but you quickly spot the same answers and voices all over the place. Now if you take robots, they are much easier to make with the TTV software. However the world is not only made of robots so back to square one again.

A good way would be a text based system, where you pick your answer, and the NPC respond by text too. Or a combination of the two options.

Combining text and voice will make the world more alive and you will not have the same high frequent of same voices as most responses will be during a text screne.

It's not easy to make, and I can only imagine true voice interaction when you have a mission that is more or less on rails.

I was in a combat Zone lately as so often and it was nice Action and everything perfect and then it occured ot me ..something is missing..: Radio chatter! "Red five ...have someone on my six... use the force Luke!"

Hopefully not. Those syntetic text to speech are very Immersion breaking.
They did a good Job with the ATC chatter. So it has to be real voices or None for me.
