Drop Multiplayer

I'll add my support for the OP. I'm in a part of the world with terrible internet and can't wait for completely offline play. That being said, I've made a few buckazoids so far with some trade runs, but as soon as other players are in the scene, the frame rate tanks and I'm probably affecting the other commanders as well.

You have been too involved and brought too much to other conversations to be labeled 'wrong', it is a valid point. Makes sense with a influx of players there will be more issues in connectivity. But I would imagine that is part of the purpose of opening the beta in the same limited area as the final Alpha, but with many more players— to stress the game and see where it has to be adjusted to hit a sweet spot.

In a day or two we will get a patch, we usually do get one pretty quick, hopefully some of this will be addressed or at least have the game opened so we can get smaller instances of players in the same area. Maybe that would alleviate some of the lag, connectivity issues.

That sounds like a plan! Let's see - how can we make an engrossing single player experience? How about we just have a dock you can sit in with no fear of ever having to deal with other players, or indeed fly a ship.

Maybe we could add a fish tank, and maybe a towel!

Eureka! I'm off to Kickstarter to see if I can get a few quid!

HA- I see what you did there...

I know this wont be a popular post ... but in my view, please drop the multi-player for now .. it is causing most of the crashes, time for devs ... and problems for players .. Drop it .. come back to it later, make Elite work first.

So you are asking the devs to drop one of the key game mechanics from the testing phase?

With regard to the OP post - I am under the impression this is exactly what they did. They got the single player working well in the alpha and then went to multi-player.

No idea whether its feasible or not but a non multiplayer mode for the present multiplayer game would allow those with poor connectivity some more stability. I think there would still be plenty of players willing to test multiplayer.

They definitely shouldn't drop the MP... beta testing online functionality is extremely important... but I am really looking forward to the bug squashing patches and the single-player content. I've been getting griefed while sorting my control scheme out :(

I am not at all bothered by the "griefing", only happened once (albeit in the first 5 mins of play) shoot me up ... I am game .. it is after all a testing ground .. and I am wrong to say that multi-player shouldn't be tested right now .. but I do feel that an option for single player should be available ... the testing of singleplayer is just as important as multiplayer IMO ... this isn't just a multiplayer game after all ... as much as some would like it to be ..

I do love this forum, I can say something like I did and I am not in an argument .... Happy flying commanders ... Shoot me ... I deserve it ! :D

I think that the elements of the single player game that needs testing can be tested in the multiplayer game as well. I don't see there to be many things that can only be tested in the single player game?

You are probably right, it would just be nice to be able to test out functions of the game without outside influences ... it is probably just me :)

That's a little over the top; don't you agree?

Single player is scheduled to be and is a viable play method.

I cant say I'm not getting frustrated with the stuttering, lag and so on but I expect we need to just bear with it. In fairness to Frontier they have made improvements. In A3 the station bugs etc were really annoying.

It was like having HALs evil sister assigning you a landing pad. #1, no #14, no no #40, etc.. ... Pad loitering warning.. rotational correction toggles off..
Puff no station.. They fixed that so lets hope they improve what we have now.

Well thats me with my optimistic hat on. ;)

No its not just you. Multiplayer has been the single biggest problem throughout Alpha - and doesn't seem to get too much better with each iteration (IMHO). I've seen the usual CTDs, lagging ships and invulnerability problems tonight that have been there since 2.x, and the disappearing/reappearing/jittering/pad-changing stations that have been there since 3.x. Not to mention the huge lags on exiting super cruise (seriously, longer than 10 seconds wait and drop us into a single-player instance, please?)

I get that p2p is extremely difficult over the wild, unregulated internet, but I do wonder how much nearer to a functionally complete, classic single player experience we would be without the large wing-spanned seabird that has been dangled around the game. But in the 21st Century everything *has* to have multiplayer.

They fixed that? Hmmmm, someone forgot to tell my client. ;)

Erm, but the whole point of the current beta is to stress test the multi-player systems.

So, you want to drop the only point of the test harness game? Tut-tut! :)

Elite: Dangerous is inherently a networked game, even if in the background in single player mode, so it needs testing to death. That's what you signed up to do.

Remember, what you're playing now is a test system using components of the final game. It's not the final game and won't be until the gamma stage. It will become more like the game as time goes on but it will still be merely a test harness. Things may appear and then then disappear if they don't work. Things will be changed, broken, fixed and it's our job to find faults, find positives and give feedback. Welcome to software testing!

Oh, and along the way, we can all have some fun, as long as you don't build your hopes on keeping and credits, ships or anything else as a trophy.

P.S. Crashes are "good". They will help Frontier Developments discover things and allow them to fix the problems before things get too far and it's a pain. So, celebrate each crash and glitch and post a ticket. It's another game! :D

I would respectfully disagree. Premium Beta is an extension of the multiplayer test, specifically to test effects of multiple participants in increased numbers.

Taking the multiplayer out of this build would negate that completely.

Single player IS indeed perfectly acceptable, it's just not part of this test, that's all I am trying to say :)

Exactly the point of testing!

-

Let's look at Alpha/Beta testing as the community helping Frontier develop the best game they can, not as early access and getting annoyed that it isn't a perfect game yet.

Send tickets, upload screenshots and post issues in the beta forum. I am reluctant to encourage people to upload videos (of issues) to youtube and they can be taken out of context and reflect negatively on an incomplete game...

...and of course encourage the naysayers ;)
