OMG. really? I just exploded why?

Ok. So I successfully dock! No hull damage! No loitering warnings!

I've made PROGRESS!

I buy some alcohol.

I pilot out with much amusement as another ship tries to enter at same time and bounces off the top of the letter box.

Come on, it's not that tight a squeeze! :p

I select some random place to go to, and engage hyperdrive. Warning temperature critical. I cancel the drive jump!

I try again with 4 pips to engines. Same thing, except this time no matter what I do I can't cancel it like last time.

Hull depleting!

BOOM.

Good by ship and cargo.

Good bye any faith of understanding this game with out assistance.

Goodbye a lot of money?

It needs a tutorial to cover basic navs, system usage. And not one made like players are idiots, or slow witted, just succinct information on correct procedures.

Example.

Docking 101.

approach desired port.
Find the letterbox entry. The port should appear to spin counter clockwise.
Open UI and go to contacts, select port and request docking permission.
close UI
Match rotation.
Engage thrusters at a safe speed.
Enter cautiously and locate your docking bay, it has glowing entry markers.

Position ship and hit X to kill engine speed
Orientate ship and engage landing gear from the other section of UI
Thrust down slowly to land.

Enjoy your stay!

As an example.

I have no no no idea what I'm meant to/able to/should do/could do in the game, but worse, I can't even get the basic systems to operate in order to explore for myself. Sick of exploding ships.

Sounds like you were rigged for silent running.

Heat can't dissipate anymore, will accumulate and eventually blow up your ship.

You want to avoid that in the future.

;)

You probably hit the key by mistake. You don't blow up simply because you didn't line up before trying to hyperjump. What you describe (temp critical, shields failing, ship goes boom) is exactly what happens when rigged for silent running.

You build up heat when your jump drive is charged too, and if you're not aligned to your jump target you can't jump so it just keeps building up. That's how I understood it to work, but I always align before starting the jump sequence so haven't seen it happen first hand.

That will explain why it happened to me randomly earlier when i was in silent running. Cheers for the heads up.

You are right about a tutorial, but please think on this:

As Alpha testers we never had a tutorial either. We had even less than you have now. What we have had however is more about 5 months of play time. You have had 2 days.....

Practise, practise, and more practise.

I'm glad you are enjoying the game though, despite the odd setback. You will get better, we all did! :)

I was stationed in one of the star ports today, scrolling through commodities list, when suddenly the screen started shaking and flashing, shields went to 0% and hull condition reduced to 75%. I was not in the hangar. Did someone just crash into me by accident, while i was parked? :S

I think there is a bug that might be someone else spawning on the same pad. I'm not entirely certain if that's the cause or if it's a physics issue, but the dock still isn't a safe place to hang around.

Good to know, thanks. A little unrelated question, if i may: I saw pictures of star systems menu somewhere here, with individual planets and stars, shown in their respective orbits, but i can't seem to find that view in star map menu. I just see systems, but can't zoom and see the names of actual planets and stars. Like in frontier. Am i missing something?

While I haven't yet blown up like this, I do regularly get the temperature critical warnings when jumping and frequently hit temps of 100-110% while charging the hyperdrive.
On leaving a dock I put 4 pips to engines, 2 to shields and fly full throttle aligned to the destination. By the time I am outside mass-lock my temp is around 45-50%. I engage hyperdrive, by the time the countdown gets to 0 I am over heating 100-110%. silent running is definitely off and shields are up.
I only noticed this since beta release and it worries me it is so easy to accidentally cook my ship to death. Once the jump to hyperspace is complete the temp sits fixed at 100%.

Is this a bug that is only affecting certain people then? Surely a simple exit dock and jump milk run shouldn't cook the ship to an inch of it's life.
