UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

I checked with a friend who has some knowledge of communications & he suggested Manchester Code which would give no more than 2 contiguous 1s or 0s, as observed in the UP signal. I had a very quick look at the UP sonograms today, & to me it looks like there is a trace of a square wave at the top of the sonogram. It appears at the top on the right hand panel & seems to be overwritten by the circle glyphs in the middle panel. Anybody else see this? If this implies a hidden clock signal then Manchester code would not be a strong contender as that's self-clocking, but is there something similar?

that same reasoning points towards it actually being the self-clocking variety, because we don't have any access to an accurate clock code- we're going off of single audio signals which are somewhat regular pulses.
I attempted this a bit with barnacle noise a few months ago, and didn't get anything (trying it on high/low purrs); I got valid morse code out of it, but only a subset of the letters A-Z. Wasn't really exhaustive with it though, i only tried the obvious groupings between wails and inverted dot and dash.

The Canonn Super UP Sphere Image Interactive Rotator Thingy!

Hi everyone, I've been wondering whether the UP image was not meant to be static, but actually an instruction to make a rotating, er, 'thing' of some kind...

don't ask :)

So anyway, I pulled apart the various bits of the line drawing that's on the first page, and which has been featured in the news, and created a web page where you can layer the various bits together and rotate them independently around the centre point of the 'sphere'. Here's a preview:

http://lab.canonn.science/content/upimagefuns-thumb.png

You can play with it here!

Disclaimer - Your desktop screen should be at least 1450px wide otherwise it's just a complete abomination; and mobile devices will very likely struggle. 9" Tablets and above might be okay, but I can't promise anything!

Update: I've improved it for mobile/tablets now and it should work pretty well on narrower screens too. Couple of other things have been added/fixed as well (see post update here)

You can rotate:
- The sphere with the line in it
- All four outer symbols independently
- The top-left arc
- The top-right arcs (together)
- The two outer lines (together)

I don't know if being able to do this will yield anything interesting - but I'm sure a few people will have fun playing around with it! :D

For the geeks:

The page uses knockoutjs to dynamically bind a bunch of absolutely positioned divs, each with the individual images (transparent pngs) set as their background. Knockoutjs bindings are also used to set CSS3 rotate transforms on each layer, based on the rotation values in the sliders.

In addition to knockout, the page also uses bootstrap 3 + bootstrap slider plugin + its knockout binding handler.

The transform-origin for all the layers is set to the pixel coordinate of the centre of the 'sphere' so that all elements rotate around the same point. As you'll see, it's very-slightly off, but not enough as to interfere that much.

Okay so new version - took a bit longer than 30 mins, sorry:

- All UI controls are now in front of the images so you should be able to use them on mobiles
- The controls will pop down below the image now when the screen is too narrow, so you can still see the image without the controls getting in the way. It's still not a great mobile experience, but it does actually work now :)
- Added 'Reset All' button to reset all the sliders to 0
- New 'Permalink' button - right-click (or long-press or whatever) and copy the href to share a link to your creation :)

This last one means that @DialBForBiscuits values (the ones that prompted me to add the 'feature') can be linked with this url: http://lab.canonn.science/upimagefuns.html#[261,90,0,240,82,177]

Edit (of previous edit): IE Bug fixed - Enjoy!!!

Damn Zoltan! Back at it again with the sweet skillz!

Damn, I hate to do this, but unfortunately I have to. I don't remember this from RiZ@L's report from the UA causing the UP to "EMP". And given the vague response from the "bug team" a thought popped in my head that I have to get out, or it will never leave.
So, RiZ@L, Zenith, or anyone else who has Honked a UA then released a UP; did you check the UA's morse afterwards? By the UP's response, it "seems" like the UA scanned it, and it usually changes its morse after scanning our ships. So, maybe?
Sorry for doing one of those "have you tried this posts" :(

EDIT: And yes, I checked the test sheet if anyone is wondering ;)

Oh, and just FYI. I had a "brilliant" idea when searching for UP Free Floaters. When jumping into a UA Anomaly USS I though about what MB said about UP FF and their location. It's logical, but perhaps not obvious until after the fact. So, my idea was; What if the UP is in the same USS as the UAs, only closer to Merope (ie. more focused). So, I left UA and headed in a straight line for Merope with the UA behind me. Flew for 10 minutes at full speed and achieved absolutely nothing. Next test is 20 minutes, and then I'm calling it a bust.
Like I said, FYI only :(

So its been a busy day for me today (wife's birthday), so I haven't had time to post some new audio here until now. Bungalo and I did some recordings with the probe last night around the Merope system. We tested in the sphere of influence of Merope 5, in the sphere of influence of Merope 5c, and in deep space of the Merope system.

Now, I was tired. He was tired. We didn't get the best recordings. There's some thruster noise. There's some sensors I didn't bother to turn off. But, the point of them is that we have 2 audio in each location. So you can somewhat determine whether the signal is the same or different each time its dropped in one place. I'm not as good at that as some of you are, so have at it. Some samples are labeled 'cleanest' and don't have thrusters and the like as much.

The feds and the imps go too far! Can a man not be left in peace to do some simple gardening? Now the whole system is contaminated! Slimy 'stards, how far must I go to escape their greedy clutches? Damn them all, I hope they wipe each other out completely!

thanks for doing the hardwork!

If science teaches us anything, it teaches us to accept our failures as well as our successes. With quiet dignity and grace. I find MB's choice of words in his hints to be interesting. I don't think it's an accident. I will be pouring through his quotes on this threadnaught and others and try to find a pattern. If there is a pattern, i will post it.

If there is no discernible pattern, however, I can only surmise that MB is F *** WITH US AND HE IS A ROTTEN, AWFUL, S** OF A B**** B******! WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!? WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!? I DON'T WANT TO LIVE! i DON'T WANT TO LIVE!

Dignity and Grace. Dignity and Grace.

(Love you, MB ;))

Totally stole this from Young Frankenstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUifcQ3QO_k

This is such a huge thread I haven't gotten a chance to look through it. Has anybody checked out what happens if they got a UA & UP together and scanned them?

Most excellent! Thanks!

So, here's the "transcribed purrs" for each recording:

Transmission 1 - Merope 5
--.-.-.--..--.-..--.--.-..--..-..
Transmission 2 - Merope 5
.--.--..--..--.-..-..--.-..--..--..--

Transmission 3 - Deep Space Near Merope
-..--..-..--.-..--.-.--..--.--..-.--
Transmission 4 - Deep Space Near Merope
.--..-..-..--.--..-.--..-.--.--..-..-

Transmission 5 - Merope 5c
--.-.-.-.--.--.--..-.-..-.-..-..--..--
Transmission 6 - Merope 5c
..--.-.--.-..--.--.-.-.-..--.--..--..

As you can see, they very clearly do NOT match, so I think that it is safe to conclude that the purrs do not depend on the location of the (dropped) probe. (There's still the possibility of the "wild" probe behaving this way, although I think it unlikely.)

I may take a look at the "chirps" next week if I have time.

That being said, listening to the "planet wails" really, really reminds me of the probe from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Y'know, the one that sounded like humpback whales 'cause it was looking for the whales? Also, the probe in that movie also messed with ship systems just like the UP does...

I'm very sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything about it in the thread search, and so I bring my question here:

When I asked if a UA or UP had been taken to the system the Starship One wreckage had been found, I was told that no system had been given; it was just a CG and survivors had been found. However, given similarities to the Antares Incident, has there been any research along those lines? Sirius confirmed that the wreckage was found in the Luyten 205-128 system, and there seems to be a persistent wreck site in-system.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
