Hacker, or just really good?

Flew into Federal Distress thingy ... saw red player in sidewinder who just killed another player ... so I engaged him ... and he proceeded to shred me into pieces in probably about 10 seconds. No matter what maneuvers I used (strafing thrust, rolling, flying crazy etc) he hit me with every shot. Are people that good?

Some are.

I'm by no means a good pilot, but I have seen a loot of n00 (cough) Betas just try to fly straight and fire their pulse.

That is never going to work.

Space is fully three dimensional, if you fly past me do not think I have to follow you. Flying down and reversing while you power on and turn means I have the best chance to shoot at your widest, longest, most juicy target area.

Use all dimensions, or you'll get shot up a lot - and not by me. I don't shoot unless engaged first.

Some are and maybe the player had a gimbaled weapon? You can always test this by enabling silent running when your shields go down. You just lost your shields anyway so you might as well try. If your opponent suddenly can't hit you anymore you'll know. ;)

Yup, some are. We've been practicing dogfighting other players for a few months now. I still suck (IMO), but I'm learning, and I'm learning more and more on how to read the opponent's ship and what he's going to do.

Well it looked like the same standard burst lasers you start with.

There are gimbaled versions of all the beam and cannon weapons. They are always one class lower in terms of damage though. If you have a class 2 hardpoint you can install a fixed class 2 weapon or a gimbaled class 1 weapon.

Right now it's impossible to see what the opponent has though since if you scan down their subsystems the weapons won't list if they are gimbaled of fixed. The same thing applies to your own ship. This one of many many things that will get fixed further down the line.

If you can read perspective it's not that hard to tell whether a laser shot is lined up with the ship's orientation or not. If you dogfight a lot of ships with fixed lasers you sort of develop this feel for when their ship is positioned to hit you or not when fighting them head on and can use translational thrusters to move away from the hit zone, if they just ignore that and hit you anyway from weird angles, they're using gimbals.

If they're using multicannons, then it's considerably harder to tell.

That could of been me.. I just killed 2 players in a row in Federal side.. about the same time

I have been getting pretty good at hitting targets at almost max range with the pulse lasers.

It was CMDR Parias or something like that. And honestly I didn't stand a chance. I got maybe 4 or 5 shots off. Not sure how you're supposed to counter that.

It is just practice don't forget many of us have been playing MP for a few months now.

I'm not an expert but I can tell straight away how good someone is when I try and evade, it's easy with some people but nigh on impossible with others.

A lot of users combine the basic up down left right with the slide controls. Which make combat really hard.

You can turn faster if you use opposite strafe when turning, so if you're pulling up as hard as you can, strafe down at the same time and your ship will turn faster.

Damn, I've just given away a combat technique ;)

TY. I think we both attack each other once or twice.

I've worked up to about 50k and dual gimballed pulse lasers farming the federal distress beacon.

I'm not really very good against players usually but last night I took out 4 federal apologists one after the other. Almost on the same lots of shields. Definitely the same hull.

Four! Four OMG! I've never managed that before ever.

So I'd not consider myself "that good" amongst the population of alphas but perhaps it does go some way to illustrate what a couple of months practice can do for you. Or maybe it's just gimbals vs fixed at work.

You can also strafe up if you are pulling up to attack someone at the top of your view, doesn't turn faster but it does drag them down into your sights

Oops, also give away a technique...
