So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Second one is only 350 from me. OMW.

Edit: *however*...

I'm checking this one out because you've done some decent homework and you have a solid system name, which we can check very readily, rather than a vague idea.

Personally, I'm highly dubious that we should be 'playing with combinations' of initials and matching them with system names. That's pretty much numerology. Either the initials are there as a system name, or they are not. After we have a solution, it should be a dead solid fit to the clues. What would be the point in just having the *combination* of initials, rather than simply the initials themselves as a solution? it's rather unsatisfactory from the perspective of creating the puzzle. Having a clue which gives initials which are a star system might be a good puzzle, but just having that combination of letters amongst tens of thousands of lettered systems is not a good puzzle solution.

Just a thought. But how about the mysterious 'EB,P' comments that Drew has dropped here and there. I'm not in-game at the moment but is there an EOFOTS EB-P system in any interesting spots?

As I've said the screen shots don't do these images justice so I highly encourage going and seeing for oneself. I'll post them in order from oldest to newest and give a brief description of what I saw. Please use zoom or full screen if you can.

1. Felinoid on left, dove holding olive branch outlined top middle, another entity on the right, in the middle is a smaller felinoid (depicted in profile) pointing at the star with it's nose.

2. Same view, a day or so later, not much change from what I can see.

3. View of the same nebula after jumping to the system the felinoid was pointing to. Older appearing Felinoid face in center. And something to the left, not sure yet.

4.Far left; dark haired man kissing a women.

5. This is the nebula from where the Feds and Imps are fighting. Man's face smiling top middle, left middle lighter image of man smiling and a strange circular object to the left of him. Old school boat top right. Pay attention to the smiling face, it will have more details above it next screen shot.

6. Smiling man a day or so later. Now has a object beside him that looks like an old lunar lander. Again boat far right. Left of face is the witchhead nebula I believe showing through. (Didn't check to see if it was the actual witchhead's or a depiction of it.

This isn't all I've seen, just a few of the times I remembered to take screens. Again if anyone can edit them to make the images appear, go for it. Even if you can't see the images, look at the amount of geometrical shapes present in gases.
Please see for yourselves. The backside of the first image is distorted today last I checked. I haven't gotten the timing down or best location to view from in that system. Thank you for your careful perusal.

You, my friend are far more observant than me. If I have to see these things to progress the story, I'm doomed. That being said, I can vaguely see some of the things you describe, after reading the description, but I saw nothing before.

I thought Reclamation WAS canon. The Dark Wheel was written back at the time of the original Elite, so the history maybe slightly different, but I am vaguely aware that it has been said that the Dark Wheel is accurate.

Reclamation is 100% canon. The Oolite Saga and The Dark Wheel are not.

One more before I hit the sack... I'm assuming someone, at some point in ED history, has already visited Phi Cassiopeia? The Heart nebula is in the constellation, Phi being its brightest star afaik. I read something about Cassiopeia's vanity and arrogance leading to her downfall. Parallels to Chione? The attentions of not one but two gods led Chione to boast that her beauty exceeded even that of Artemis which led to her downfall. (It would mirror the Prism system quite well ho ho!)

Apparently Cassiopeia also p|ssed off Poseidon and he decided to flood her country. That sounds like terraforming to me, because I now totally buy Matzov's theories on the Rift.

I certainly hope that reply was meant for hhiram and not me. I don't recall ever having personally attacked Drew. He's not even on my in-game KOS list :)

Ah but you forget: Drew has specifically stated that he snuck things into Reclamation as 'easter eggs' for Oolite fans.

Plus: The Dark Wheel and the original Elite aren't completely canon either.

EDIT: This is from Drew's FAQ on Reclamation:

Q. Is the old woman in the hospital Rebecca Tyley from your Oolite books, or is she Elyssia Fields from ‘The Dark Wheel’?

My Oolite books are not canon to the ED universe, neither is ‘The Dark Wheel’ any more. Parallel universes will naturally share a lot in common.

There are certainly parts of the Oolite books that share common parralels.

It may be that future ED books could include names and places from Oolite but I doubt it due to issues regarding that game and Frontier.

Its always good however to follow Drews line of thinking across the storys.

The reason for my belief with regards to Dark wheel is the recent emergence of Liz Ryder. The Tionisla graveyard, the Cobra and other parts of Reclamation.

The problem however is legal issues surrounding Dark Wheel alongside changes in the game dynamics as well as time line issues.

The original Dark Wheel book was small though and was lacking in great depth anyway for it to really effect Lore and Canon in ED too much.

You basically have 4 characters in that book and a few systems and the name Raxxler.

Its far easier to incorporate The Dark Wheel into the game, a way of doing this from a legal issue is to shroud it all in mystery and not be too specific.

Its Liz Ryder that has got me on this line of thinking. Its a way of tying things in from the original book.

Its also hard for the devs to ignore Dark Wheel completely as its from the Original game.

There are many involved with kickstarter who come from the Original game like myself.

I think the Lore of ED does need to be sorted out though.
Reclamation was good but vague on Elite lore which is understandable while a game is in development.

I'm sure future books will be a bit more direct especially with regards to history.

Maybe Drew could shed some light on how The Dark Wheel fits into lore ??

IIRC all cassiopeia stars have been checked at some point, including Rho Cas. I also did look for the SNR Cas A (does not exist).

In the story, Posseidon sent the Cetus monster, which is then slain by Perseus. You can go nuts with mythology with the rift
mystery. Slipery slope toward accute tin poisoning.

Any Commanders hanging around the Old Worlds should keep their eyes open for an incoming Freelance Report...

You don't, what is happening here I guess is the atmosphere being stripped away by the stellar Wind.
At some point all the water will be gone.

Maybe it does something like : gas giant with Iced core => Icy planet => water planet => metalic planet.

... Maybe Drew could shed some light on how The Dark Wheel fits into lore ??

The Dark Wheel exists in game so they at least are canonical. The Ryders are canonical because they appear in John Harper's And Here the Wheel. Whether or not Liz is related to the Ryders of TDW is questionable.

Drew reused Tenim Neseva from the pages of the Oolite Saga. Not hard to fathom that the inspiration for 'the old woman' came from that same source. If you want to believe that she's Elyssia Fields ... I'm not going to protest (much). To me though, she's Rebecca. :)

I'm keeping an eye out for all of those, but one of my little pet theories right now is that any oddity might be a similarity between systems: Perhaps identical systems spread throughout the sector, which is a clue to engineering on a massive scale. Only those familiar with the area might note it, which plays towards some of the hints.

Perhaps - and I say this from the perspective of knowing it's a huge job and I'm nowhere near the point where I could help - everybody who's out there should be screenshotting system maps so that we can all go through them and see if there are any patterns emerging?

If anyone can give me a location in EAFOTS with a nice ELW and plenty of landable planets I'd appreciate it. The Earth Expeditionary Fleet is looking for a place to setup a base camp.

Octagons though... I'm not aware of anything living in nature that uses octagons. It would be interesting to find out what does make use of octagons consistently. Anyone know?[/QUOTE]

Thargoids, back in the day. Who knows what they'd look like now though?

I haven't scanned the Gas Giants or their moons but no cadmium or arsenic in the HMCs. Planet 1 has yttrium, planet 2 has polonium, planet 5 has Niobium.

Edit: this was meant to be an adit of my previous post, but clicked reply instead. Never mind.

Thanks! I'll check it out!
