Apology to FD

During the first months after release of Elite Dangerous, I was a little (quite a bit) flamatory about the lack of content in the game. I decided there wasn't enough vision in the game, and I thought other certain (recently released) titles would take over as the game to end all games. Well, I was wrong, as it happens "vision" is actually a really really difficult thing to realise, and given the level of dedication to realism and immersion put into this game, I've come to the conclusion, that it actually isn't that bad after all.

Thank you FD :p

Yup, it's easy to point out flaws and individual issues - and I think it's all good because sometimes we players do know when stuff isn't working the way FD envisioned. At the same time this game transcended the "game" realm and became something of a second life (not related to the 3d chat program with the same name) to many people. And building such a thing is quite the achievement. For all the instancing issues, the lack of metagame depth, the "spreadsheetness" of all decisions, there's still something about being able to fly around a 1:1 galaxy, and being able to go somewhere and be the first person there.

+rep for your post. We should all stay critical, but open minded! :)

Nice one mate, have some rep, admissions and steps back are far too rare on the interwebs. Now, where are the rest of the 'Elite is dead, NMS has sooo much more and kills Elite at launch' crowd?.........:p

Sounds about right.

I personally started thinking more and more about the logistics and production of video games only a couple of years back — especially as games get bigger and consumers are demanding more.

played yesterday NMS for a couple of hours... had to come back to ED in order to breath again that feeling that i'm in a simulated as close as possible to reality galaxy.

ED ftw

EDIT: also, the port from console is behaving terrible on PC. They should have waited a little bit more and get the basic sorted out.

If NMS is arcady space sim, and ED is realistic space sim, (knowing nothing about it) where will SC fit?

it's a vapor space sim!

At the moment being SC is almost nothing. I have purchased a ship sometime ago, it was in offer. There is nothing you can do but to try their "modules" just to have a sneak peak at how it will look in the "future". When this future will be present.. well nobody knows. Anyway i disliked the flight model of SC. It is something one should try to understand it.

To be fair to all the developers, we're sort of treading new ground here. We've been regurgitating FPS games etc. so long that we're used to getting a polished product that gits together neatly from release. And it's for that reason I find them boring as hell.

ED has piqued my interest in gaming properly again. I was getting so bored before and have been keeping myself going off the back of Destiny, which has some awesome elements but suffers from a lack of endgame content. ED? Completely new experience, and where the hell is that endgame? ;)

Some patience is needed with the devs. At least, more patience than the forum gives them. They do make some stupid calls, but hey - it's relatively unprecedented ground.

The word 'sim' is used often for things it shouldn't be used. Orbiter is a space flight sim.

The nearest I think to a 'sim' regards sci-fi space ships, is Rogue System, I would think. KSP with its simple style approach (although not simple in game-play) does a very good job at making the player think about how a space ship should be put together, ready for space flight. Space Engineers does a good job at that too (although a lot simpler in some ways, but better than KSP in others), they're both very good sandbox games.
ED is good at space itself, but so is Space Engine (which is free). ED, as an 'open world' game, is good. Is ED a sandbox, I'm not quite sure yet, but its certainly getting there the more they put in, I hoped it would be a sandbox when I bought into it, so I still keep my fingers crossed it will reach that (just in me view), because for me at the moment, it still falls short of being a 'sandbox' game.

All of the above games, I like. They all make for good games and/or experiences. But don't be fooled where the word 'sim' is used, there are very few actual sim games around.
But the only real space flight sim, is 'Orbiter', from those I've mentioned above.

'Sim', Sandbox' & 'Open World'. Words often used incorrectly in gaming nowadays, just in my view.

Edit: Oh, and NMS for me, a sandbox'ish survival game, with arcade style controls. But very good, nevertheless.

I partially agree, although I simply think that the "sim" area needs more sub-categories that are descriptive. For example:
Rogue system — Realistic study sim
Elite Dangerous — In cockpit space sim

Elite, much like all the classic space sims from the 1990s, pretty much only simulates being in a simple cockpit and maybe some basic systems management. (basically like hard scifi vs. soft scifi)

As for the word sandbox — If a word is taken from a real life example, it should reflect the meaning of the word where it's taken from.
In a real life sandbox, you can build/shape things.

Maybe No Man's Sky turns out to be the best that has happened to Elite: Dangerous? :)

I believe your words might be prophetic.
The visuals of NMS can only be endured for a limited time.
It does not feel like being in a space environment, but more like swimming in a pool of incredibly sweet, bright colored soda.
It is a bright disney cartoon world. It is fun, but it becomes oppressive and suffocating after a while.

And then when you return to ED it is like diving into a cool, refreshing lake.
NMS is no competition. I could not spend the many hours in that game I already spent in ED.

Complaining about something is not wrong per say, the issue if your complaint isn't driven by facts or solid proof.

We as gamers should always try to explain why we do not like feature XYZ! then if we do have other ideas, explain them in a good and neutral way.

Sometimes FD will listen, other times its just not possible due to whatever the reason FD have for not doing it.
