[Journal] Just one more jump...

I expect to arrive at Jaques within 2-3 days,

Welp. That was a lie.

Long story short, I ran out of bookmarked blackholes on my way there and I got really thirsty

I will update the post a little bit later with the details of the last 8000 LY, but right now I've just purchased and outfitted a T6 and I plan to contribute a little bit to the CG.

The Anaconda is an excellent miner.

PS: Don't sell your ADS...

Oh that it probably is, but I don't want to change my current outfitting, plus the T6 is way cheaper if I manage to lose it while mining.

So an update:

I have been looking at the map closely, bookmarking all the Black Holes I could find that were on the way to Jaques. I did end up finding around 100 and my route was basically jumping from one BH to another.

I have a couple of interesting system screenshots, but they were mostly all the same, a bit boring all together.

I decided to spice things up by landing on a 2,6G moon with rings:

But at a cost of nearly 20% of my Anaconda's hull. Honestly though, I really don't see the appeal of landings just yet, perhaps I'm missing something.

The closer I was to Jaques the more I wanted to speed things up to get there faster, and so, about 1800 LY away as I ran out of bookmarked black holes, I rushed towards the station.

Once here I sold the exploration data and decided to contribute to the CG. I purchased the T6, outfitted it with mining gear and headed to the nearest metal ring.

I managed to get myself into the top 10% fairly quickly, and I found mining pretty enjoyable.
Talked to a few CMDRs at Jaques and formed a wing to make the rock-punching go quicker.

Today I decided to explore the nearest stars around Jaques to see if there's anything left to be explored. Turns out that all you need to do is go past 90 LY away from Jaques and there's plenty to see and scan.

I made 2 quick excursions, visiting the nearest black holes. There's quite a few and I didn't manage to get to all of them yet, so that's the plan for the next few days.

This is actually pretty cool, having a station in the middle of nowhere, with all this unexplored space around, you can make quick trips and put your name out there and always have somewhere to come back to a warm bed. I love it and I hope this becomes a new colony out in the black.

Decided to go as far down as I can, looking for something interesting, something fun, and also finally getting a look on the galaxy from below.

It did not disappoint, because 3 jumps before my route ends I have found this - feast your eyes:

When I retire, i want to live here.

Lowest point yet, -2856

Alright. I managed to get to the lowest possible point around this area, -2856 LY below. Here's a map of this little excursion:

I've noticed it's actually pretty safe to travel down there since there are plenty of scoopable stars around, and it's interesting because nearly every system I went to had at least HMC's if not plenty of WW's and even ELW's.

The views were amazing, with the core of the galaxy as the background, there are so many beautiful vistas I could stay there all week.

I went back to Jaques and I plan to contribute to the CG a little bit more and start thinking about what would my next step be. I really like it around here, plenty of undiscovered space all around and a safe heaven nearby.. What more you could ask for?

Reinstalling the game today to see what's new and what's changed since (looks up last post date) I was last here 6 years ago!
I don't know my location or my available ships yet, but I got my X52 Pro ready and am looking forward to flying.
Anybody around that still remembers ol' Asay?
How've you guys been?

Welcome back! Six years? Oof, that's a lot, and a lot has happened since. Let's see, just for exploration... lots of research has been done on exploration, external sites have proliferated: first, I'd recommend looking at all the stuff on EDAstro, then moving on to the new Galactic Exploration Catalog. There's Inara, EDSM (used to be The site to go to, but it isn't up-to-date anymore), and plenty of others. Third-party utilities will help you significantly: the game logs much more information to the disk now, the apps can help look through them automatically to find stuff that you might have missed, provide you with some extra help, and most importantly, to share your data with the crowdsourcing community.
The subforum here hasn't seen a lot of activity, most discussion seems to have moved over on various Discords these days. Often on squadron Discords - oh hey, that's another game feature you haven't seen yet.

On that note, moving on to game features: listing everything from all over the game would be too long, so I'll just stick to exploration.

First and foremost, you'll see that you now have to grind a minigame called the FSS to scan bodies, the system map is no longer revealed without doing so. But in the process, you can scan everything from infinite range in the system. Exploration payouts have been increased by around nine times, and if you play on Odyssey, mapping planets with the DSS (another grindy minigame) will give a bonus on top of that. Exploration rank requirements have stayed the same though, so reaching Elite is much faster now. Then there's that in Odyssey, you can level up even farther: doing the same amount will get you to "Elite I", then it caps out at "Elite V". The old Elite rating would be around Elite VIII now though.

Then for other stuff, the route plotter is much improved: it no longer chokes in the core, has a maximum range of 20,000 ly, and you can add filters to it. People usually filter by star types. Neutron stars have had jets added to them, which you can use for a one-time 4x jump range boost. However, if you hit the exclusion zone and drop down into the jet, it'll quickly fry your ship, so it's not without risk.
There are also Notable Stellar Phenomena to be found in space, various flora down on landable planets (Odyssey introduced landing on thin atmospherics), and a Codex that tallies discoveries from all Commanders. While that concept sounds good, the Codex has plenty of issues though, and lots of bugs.

As for ship equipment, we've had new exploration-related stuff added as well. (There have been new weapons, new equipment, and so on, I'll just stick to the exploration-related stuff.) The most notable is the unlockable Guardian FSD Booster: you can to gather stuff from the ruins of an extinct alien civilization, unlock the booster at tech brokers, and then fitting one on your ship will increase your jump range by a flat amount. The largest one is a class 5 module, it adds +10.5 ly. Then on regular equipment, there's Supercruise Assist, Automated Docking, Automated Landing and Take-off (all of these are optional).
Also, Engineering has been overhauled, and it takes much less time than it used to. There has been power creep as well, of course.

Bunch of new ships too (even though it has been over two years since we've last had a new one); for exploration, you'll mostly want to take a look at the Krait Phantom. It's around the Asp Explorer's level, it's slightly better in some aspects, slightly worse in others.

Then there are fleet carriers, which are basically mobile player-owned stations. Quite many of them have anchored in permanent locations around the galaxy, where explorers can stop at to repair their ships, sell their exploration data (at a 25% loss though), have their ships transferred over if they wish to switch, and so on. Fleet carriers have a 500 ly jump range, but can only jump every 20 minutes. So, travelling by ship is faster, but there are some systems which can only be reached with a carrier.

In addition to the Guardian stuff I mentioned above, there has also been plenty of Thargoid content as well, but it's pretty much confined to the vicinity of the bubble only, you won't find much in the rest of the galaxy. Just their occasional crashed probes, in Odyssey.

Oh, and Colonia (the systems that have sprung up around Jaques) has a bunch of inhabited systems now, but it's still less than 1% of the bubble's size. With plenty of player groups, it has had quite a rich history over the years. That's something cool to read up on too, search for Ian Doncaster's stuff if you're interested.

Well, I think that's it in a nutshell, although I can't help but feel like there's still exploration-related stuff I forgot about. In any case, I'm sure someone else will mention anything I missed, or you'll find it on your own. So, have fun exploring!

Welcome back!
As marx said, there's a lot more to see out in the black now and I would mainly add that white dwarf stars are a bit hazardous. They have jet cones that give you a 50% range boost but these tend to be very close to the exclusion zone, so it is sometimes not worth the risk.
There is a new SRV, the Scorpion, which can be crewed by two, as it has two weapons but I have yet to drive it myself - I am newly returned from my Galactic Circumnavigation (journal in sig might give you an idea of some of the sights) and am currently taking part in the latest Buckyball Racing Club event, the Se7en Sisters Speedway Remixed (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...ball-championship-race-5.604564/#post-9868163), which involves flying out to the Pleiades and back from Ohm Horizons in HIP 29312. This might also be a way to see some of the new features, if you dare!
Take your time, find what you enjoy and have fun!

So the past two attempts of coming back and getting into exploring failed as evidenced by the lack of updates. Maybe this time around will be different.
I came back a couple of days ago and just in time for the Panther Clipper CG so I got myself into a Type-9 and i'm contributing cargo to make some money (which i found I had little of compared to what's considered "a lot" these days) and re-learning core mechanics which have all changed.

I was looking at the current exploration fits and ships and got myself a Mandalay with a basic fit, but from what I understand, FSD these days can be pushed far more than in the old days and 40 LY jump range is nothing to brag about these days, so I'll see how to address that.

In any case I'm happy to see the game is active again and I hope to earn enough credits soon to start planning a longer expedition in the new ship, or maybe even join the DS3 in January, who knows.

Anyways, hello CMDRs, Asay is back (again) and im here to enjoy the views of the black once more. Fingers crossed it sticks this time.
