Horizons SRV in ship now can replace detailed scanner?

Situation at yesterday evening:
1) I have a asp explorer in long-trade/explorer fit. WITHOUT srv, but with detailed surfaced scanner.
2) Last days I trying to find some barnacles for opening fsd boost, so I drop detailed scanner, grab SRV and fly
3) But during flying from one system to other i forget that i drop detailed scanner and by usual practice targeting system ... and see that scanning started as usual. And finished as usual. I repeat this many times on different planets and all was ok.
4) I come to dock, sell SRV and when i target planet - i get nothing, as usual.

So, please prove me that now SRV in ship can do the same work as detailed surface scanner. Free slot for asp explorer is good gift ;)

Well unfortunately, while you did scan the planets, you weren't awarded a detailed scan but a "regular" one (which I think the discovery scanner carries out). You'll see there is less data filled in on the map.

I really like the idea though and you're right, although it would throw combat loadouts into dissarray, I feel most ships lack one slot each if you want to make a really good general science vessel (mining can be roleplayed as scientific work too? I know I do).

Maybe the suggestion could be, if you spent a certain amount of time on a planet in SRV or if you collected a certain number of samples, from meteorites and outcroppings, then you could be awarded a detailed surface scan? I'd vote for that. +1

This, good explanation :)

Just check your system map, i guess you didn't got the mat-data which were implemented at last update. This is one of the data, you only become from the detailed surface scanner.

Scan level 1 = honking with ADS
Scan level 2 = body-scan with ADS
Scan level 3 = body-scan with DSS

That would be cool, I'd love to free that slot (it's a class 3 slot in my Python, ouch).

Now i did not check about rewards, but i cannot see difference from pilot view

So if i use "srv scan", i see that UNEXPLORED changes to properly name, in system map i see what i should see, etc.

That's your body scanner at work. Not the detail scanner.

The detail scanner only doubles the scan time and returns further information about the object.

with a detailed surface scanner/L3 scan you should get info in system map like:
- temperature
- materials on landable planets

it is easy to check the difference by turning of the dss in right hand panel, do a l2 scan, check system map, turn dss on, do a l3 scan, and compare

I vote to have a new item that combines an ADS with a DSS (that can take twice the amount of space and cost double the ADS). I don't want to put smaller items in larger bays and filling a 3 or 4 slot with an ADS and another with a DSS seems stupid.

And I would like to have a button that will make me instant Elite and give me the best ship in the game with the best setup and make me win every fight. :D
