A Moan About Frontier Releasing Info

Those "free vanity items" that they also hand out at every games event they go to?
Again ... NOT what I am discussing here.
To clarify ... what I am discussing is Frontier attending a Q&A session, and not preparing something more than what was already known, and a stock response of "Gamescom".

I see no reason why that clip of the launched fighter could not have been shown to a closed room with no cameras at Lave con.

No reason whatsoever.

This.
It doesn't take much to please the fans. A tiny little bit of fanservice would've be nice though.

EDIT: Note I'm not even asking for extra content or stuff like that. Make a screenshot in-game. Give it to the fans at the event. Or heck, you could do dev updates on the forum with little teasers, doesn't even have to be finished stuff. The devs no doubt make lots of little screenshots of in-progress stuff. Some of it you won't give out, like details on thargoids. Other bits could've easily been fed to the community while they were being worked on, like the beluga liner.

Frontier doesn't "win" anything by keeping stuff like the beluga liner secret until the ship is 100% completely done ;)

So basically the problem is that you had a Lavecon a week before Gamescom and FD was unwilling to jump the gun on their announcements? The easiest solution to that would be to have Lavecom alongside Gamescom in the same town so the Q&A would actually make sense. FD gets to announce their goodies to the press and the fans get to ask all about it afterwards.

No! But, like, a single little screenshot of one of the new bases would've been cool to have. You know, *something*. Anything more than the word "Gamescom".

A lot of questions were asked, and not much info was given out. The standard response was "Gamescom". It became a joke. So Gamescom is here, and did us, the fans, the ones who funded this whole thing 4 years ago, who re-invigorated Frontier Developments as a company, who pushed them to become a much bigger player in games development ... and what happens? Some no-name site gets an exclusive scoop. Thanks Michael.

Some no-name site? Gamescom is the largest gaming event in the world! For sure a better opportunity to gain a lot of attention for new announcements than Lavecon where it would be more like preaching to the choir.

I didn't link to Gamescom's website.
Don't imply I said something I didn't.

No that's not what he said.

The problem is that the announcement at gamescom was pre-empted by a third party which is understandably irksome to those of us who paid for the development of the game. That information could easily have been partially explained in a closed session at Lavecom rather than letting us read about it on the internet before it was actually announced.

It is not that it could not have been, it is the seeming expectation that it should have been as they were owed that

Just following your queue

Way to drop a log all over the fans there bro, grats.

Isn't it all a bit of a storm in a tea-cup considering almost everything that has been announced was already known? The only thing that I hadn't seen previously announced was the Independent fighter, and we already suspected there would be new fighters as part of 2.2. Everything else was just first glimpses, and release dates.

We did release some information exclusively at Lavecon - namely the response to the Jaques initiative, and some more details on the tourism. Our plan has been to make a big splash at Gamescom (which seems to be going well), but we did keep Lavecon in mind. Quite a few members of the team went and chatted to everyone about the game, and were happy to meet and interact with the fans who came - and for me that was the strength of Lavecon. It isn't about trying to sell the game, it's about meeting the players.

Thanks for the response Michael. Maybe it went a bit under, but the other half of the criticism here was now sometimes information goes to select press people behind closed doors, with NDA etc. Or some really big thing shows up on some third party site instead of, for example, here on the official forums.

This is what I loved about Lavecon, and will definetely go next year again, I did not care that much about what will be released in October, I will get to play it eventually :)

As somebody has already mentioned, you need to give the press something new for them to feature you. It's a balance as to what gets revealed where, and Gamescom is a big thing for us. You'll note that we're also conducting live streams to provide more detail and answer questions about what's revealed, and they are exclusively community based.

Well, you guys could at least do this with more... quality news outlets. In other words, very much not this. :D

This is the reason I come over from Holland every year to go to Lavecon. Relaxed, informal, getting to meet and chat to the developers and catching up with fellow players. Awesome, and it seems to get better every year!

Lavecon DID get the jump on everyone didn't it? I seem to remember reading that MB, when put on the spot about aliens in game said something like, "wait for Gamescom" (If that's a poker face, ante up!)

:D

Maybe look at this way,; PC Gamer might get the press release before playerbase does, but who gets to play the game first (in beta and then in release)? Owners and players of the game (me and you) that's who !?

I'm hyped in any case, come what may, as and when. +1 FDev

What you fail to understand is that you are wrong. ED is already a "home brand". Most mags are interested and all mags bother to even post articles about meaningless forum events such as your Barnacles thread.

If you were to release stuff in lavecon, sites would bring articles about lavecon and about what you released to it. It would not be overshadowed by titles with bigger budget. You would have the spotlight for yourself, because rags have nothing better to write about.
You would also make your fans far happier. Lavecon is thing made of love, gamescom is thing made of money, PR lies and plastic.

Just no to this:
.

.
First of all those that attended LaveCon may not all have been alpha backers or even a backer till after release. Why should you get exclusive information and then told TELL NO ONE till after it is announced at GamesCom? What makes some who attend an event special to the point they get information and can then say. we know some exclusive information but can't tell anyone yet till announced. You want bad blood on these boards that will cause it in a heart beat. I went to LaveCon and damn you should see what we did, but we can't tell you. Ya that goes over big when people such as myself an alpha backer says why can't I know? Oh I didn't go so your all so special. No it would make the boards a we and they. Those special people who went to LaveCon and those who didn't.
.
Just never ever should FD ever release information to only a subset of the elite players, it is either all or none. As for magazines etc.. absolutely because that generates revenue in the long run to fund the game. That is the goal we all want and should encourage.
.
So stop the entitled mentality, be happy for the exclusive you did get, the freebee's and most of all a great night out and a chance to talk to the developers. Talk like the OP and others saying they should get more may end up having FD say we will not attend because we can't announce more then we are willing to, and we don't want bad blood so we will stay home. Keep it up with the entitled mentality and you may end up with a fan only LaveCon which would still be great but not as good as the devs being there.
