Quick thought on the Bounty Hunter thing, there have been reports of people being scanned by a DBX which jumps out before they have chance to do anything. I had the same thing happen to me last week in the Aries Dark Region BUT I did manage to follow the DBX's wake to hip 13005 and the ship until it dropped out of supercruise around the 5th planet.
The DBX belonged to a Jim Kjellen and when I low waked out it scanned me again and did a bounty hunter like quote along the lines of "you are not the person I am looking for" so if the Bounty Hunter isn't the engineer perhaps it will be the DBX that is flying around the Pleiades area.

So it looks to me like the alien ship/battle scene is near Soul nebula not California, which maybe makes it more related to the Formidine Rift mystery. Has been speculation that might be related to an AI threat coming from Bovomit sector. Cylons were AI & early reports from Gamescon say the alien ship looks like a Cylon Basestar. So we could end up fighting on two fronts- AI plus Thargoids- historically not a good military situation to be in!
So Michael, how relieved are you that progress is finally being made? You must have the patience of a saint not to scream at us to look at certain places.
