Gamescom 2016: am I the only one disappointed?

True, I do hold some hope for the beta, but FD is playing catch up now. They need to get content out the door and free up resources for season 3 for their next batch of sales. I would presume they would want to cash in on the holiday sales as well. Delays, however, cost money and there is no subscription fees injecting a constant flow of cash to compensate. They are completely reliant on pushing out content to draw in new customers or energize the fanbase to buy the next season.

There will be a set team, no doubt to patch/tweak the latest updates after release but delegating resources for major changes to past released content is counterproductive, from a business standpoint. So in my opinion if the changes don't make into the release we are probably not going to see them down the line. The same can be said for major changes to 2.2 before October, as it would further delays.

I think it would have been a better idea to instead of hiring one NPC to fly your fighters, to actually have to hire lots of them. To have these people as crew aboard your ship and as fighters get killed these individuals die. That way, you would need a constant stream of npc's and it would get rid of this remote control nonsense. A fighter being destroyed in the hands of a player would just be a case of you taking control of the NPC while flying the fighter.

It is even possible FD could have used the drones asset already in the game to allow small escape modules for the NPC's to get back to your ship. Launching the escape pod might or might not be always possible in time thus allowing for NPC's to rank up/be killed.

Well you don't 'have' to use it if you have the play time and still want the immersion, but I'm sure casual players will find it a boon.

It is not about immersion. I couldn't care less about immersion. My reason for having a problem with it is that it stands to break several areas of the game due to other people using it.

You don't seem to understand the implications.

Even if a player chooses not to use teleportation, the mechanic is still one that fundamentally shreds the concept of the game as a 1:1 model of the galaxy with inherently appreciable time requirements for long distance travel.
And being able to instantly move a ship which has been 2 years balanced to have short jump range as a trade off for other attributes throws combat out of the window too.

Choosing not to use the feature will not stop it utterly destroying the game as Elite. It will become something else.

I was disappointed that multi-crew isn't until 2.3.

Other than that, im most interested in the vip passenger missions which has a decent chance of being disappointing if there is little difference between it and cargo runs.

Honestly my biggest complaint is that there was more or less silence in regards to PP, especially since a fed/imp war appears to be brewing and we have a new power about to be made.

I dont think it is really fair to compare Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen.
I bought Elite at launch in January 2015. Played more than 2 000 hours on it.
I saw videos of Star Citizen in Feb 2015 and though "Wow it's even better than Elite, it looks great". Havent played more than a few hours on it.

Elite was good and playable at launch and only got better at every update. It still has issues and bugs but none are game breaking (IMO of course). I havent played any other game so much.

Elite cost me around 100 euros (with Horizon) maybe less, I dont really remember. Cost / hour less than 0.05 euros.
SC cost me 60 euros. Cost / hour 30 euros (and it wasn't fun).

So as I said, comparing Elite and SC isn't fair. SC has still to show me that the money I spent wasn't stolen. It really feels like it at the moment.
Elite was worth every euros spent and even more.

I wish Elite wouldn't start promising things they aren't sure to deliver or cant deliver before a few years.

100% agree about SC - I've bought a basic package that I haven't touched for nearly a year..after CR's recent demo, I actually hope they never release it in the form of his vision..I'll never see my friends or family again!

..or my genitals, for that matter! (without a strategically placed mirror anyway - due to corresponding amount of fast food consumption & lack of exercise :D)

You guys really dont know how much this will cost for now. It may be in the 10s of millions for moving a ship like a python to jaqcues. Cant imagine people would do it on a daily basis with that cost attached.

The details I've either read or heard about the NPC pilots (Obsidian Ant, I think) is that you can hire a max of 3 but you can only have one on your ship. The other two just sit on the station twiddling their thumbs until you swap them out or one dies.

I think the main issue is in open play. The ability to instantly transport a fully kitted/modded PvP beast ship with zero jump range across the galaxy in an instant just screams for abuse.

I am mildly disappointed too. 2.2 new features bring very little interesting content (for me at least), and I was really looking forward to see some info for 2.3, 2.4 ( and possibly further) as well. QoL improvements are more than welcome though!

For me I was happy in that the 2.2 content was more than I hoped for in the next update, but I was disappointed to hear nothing about 2.3 or season 3. I guess they're learning to manage expectations better and only show near complete stuff to avoid disappointment. Still, overall I'm happy with the direction the game is moving in so can't complain too much.

What I did think was odd however was drip feeding the stuff over 6 streams, it would have fitted in 2 or 3 no problem at all and been all the more exciting for it. There was so much stuff they could have fed us a few scraps in newsletters these last few weeks and still had enough good stuff left for the streams.

They caught everyone's attention with glimpses of aliens. Aliens (not Thargoids) look as if they will be introduced into gameplay in a subtle way - maybe no big invasion, but reports of them turning up in different places, more puzzles to solve, more reports of sightings - they could play that game with us for a long time while they develop the base game.

They are not restricted to introducing one type of alien - I hope there are more - heck, there could be countless discoveries in a jigsaw of a bigger picture leading up to 3.0 ALIENS (if they want an attention grabbing name for next time). And everyone seems to have forgotten about the Missing - so there's plenty to "play with"from FD's perspective.

FD may not be able to control the pace of further development, such as atmospheric planets or space walking, because they have to wait for development of programming engines to create that in a convincing manner.

However, FD can control the pace and direction of setting puzzles about aliens, and we will follow - they have peaked our interest, and meanwhile the base game will continue to develop. Perhaps as Star Citizen ramps up, our game is deliberately shifting, as others have commented, towards this type of game play, and it could be that FD is shifting tactics because the base game is now ready for it.

In summary, a very competent space simulation coupled with mystery and suspense is a powerful combination. It could be that FD knows how to do this best, and this is the direction the game will now be taking.

If what I think is true and a major part of seson 3 will be focused on aliens (stations, bases, ships, interacting with them peacefully or by force), FD can not show much of it in advance without giving away too much of the secret.

I guess this is one of the largest drawback of the delays: it completely screwed their anouncement schedule! If all would have gone as innitially planned, we would have encountered the aliens by now and FD could have promoted 3.0 at gamescom in a big way.
You think we, the players, are most annoyed by the delay? I bet, it is FD's marketing departement!

Though it might seem trivial to some, there is a real delight in hearing someone speak to me when I drop out at a Station.....and a different voice each time too! Now we're about to get new station types and new station interiors too-which is going to make my journeys to different systems feel even *more* Unique. Then we have all the different planetary features and other new assets in each system. The amount of variety this is going to add to my journeys can simply not be overstated. For that alone I am massively looking forward to 2.2. Everything else is gravy, but was still wonderful to hear. So, again, I say that I was definitely *not* disappointed by Gamescom!

I totally agree. The big changes are good but the small ones make the immersion more complete. And I see a lot of good and interesting small ones in 2.2.

The Gamescom demonstration was great during day 1, 2 and 3 (except instant ship teleportation). Day 4 was mostly a recap.

It lacked that 1 huge thing that blows away the competition.... Last year we had Horizons and landing on lifeless, full-scale moons, planets. This year we don't have anything mind-blowing.

The other big upcoming space sim Star Citizen overshadowed Elite Dangerous again and stole the show at Gamescom.

I'm disappointed that there was nothing mind blowing. I thought we would see a preview of some amazing things to come for Elite Dangerous (space-legs, atmospheric planets).

IMO SC will never be ready for release. What they show is tailor-made and specific - they have no hope of maintaining that glossyness into release. I believe the whole thing to be a con - nothing more than a way for CR to make a living. If it ever gets released it will be like NMS - bearing no resemblance to the marketing. You can dis ED and FD all you like but guess what? They are the ones who actually made it happen, and it is improving by leaps and bounds - perhaps not to your personal schedule, but improving rapidly nonetheless. Right-O trolls - have at me. En garde!

I was so impressed with the new stuff for Elite Dangerous: Horizons announced at Gamescom, that I purchased the Planet Coaster Alpha (well done Ed. you got me!) :)

:)And nothing has blow our faces off:)

Depends on exactly what degree of face-blowing you were expecting I suppose.

Again it's a personal perspective obviously but I'm excited by quite a bit of the content revealed for 2.2. The route filtering options on the galmap are something I've wanted for some time; I still want the ability to plot a multi-waypoint route myself without having to just set bookmarks and then jump from one to the next plotting routes manually at each stage but the filters are a good idea and will be useful in a number of ways, whether it's explorers plotting routes that only include scoopables or focus on certain star classes, traders lotting routes to avoid anarchy systems and those in war states etc.

Ship-launched fighters look fun, both npc-piloted and to fly yourself; not sure they will become a major part of my gameplay but it's hard to tell until I've had the chance to actually try them.

The ongoing work developing planetary geographical features is good news for those of us who like to head off into the black.

The fact that we clearly have aliens about to make their entry into the game is somewhat exciting...

We have a second bubble of human space developing and ship transfer mechanics being introduced that will allow people other than die-hard explorers/truckers to participate in the gameplay around it.

I don't actually expect every update to 'blow my face off'. I'd be quite happy with it being moderately ruffled as long as the game is moving forward. Just as with the engineers update, this one seems to include lots of small additions which might not seem earth-shattering on their own but taken together they're going to have a cumulative effect on the game which won't be insignificant. There's a fairly obvious theme behind the season two updates so far in that if you look past the headline feature ('engineers', 'guardians' etc) they're all about fleshing out the game world more and moving it closer to being that 'living, breathing galaxy' that we want.

Given a choice between vague announcements of features that may be on the way in 18 months time and detailed reveals of updates which are well along the road to being delivered already, I think the way FD are handling things is fine on balance.

SC dident cost my anything. But what im sayng is that they lie to us. There was no faceblowing. All the things was well known from a half of a year.

'They lie to us'

Seriously? :(

Elite is the only one of the modern crop of space games that just delivers. Quietly, steadily and without hype.
NMS was going to kill Elite... In fact there's a decent surge of refugees coming into ED right now. Ask some of those players about being lied to.

SC 'might' be amazing (it should be given the budget). But that's 2 years away at least, and while I wish it well there's a suspicion that it might be the biggest gaming disaster ever. Time will tell.

Meanwhile you have a playable (like 1000's of hours) game that matches the scope of NMS, with multi-player and ever increasing levels of depth. ED is released 18 months now and there have been regular updates and a planned future roadmap.

We'd all like more information but I feel FDev have been vindicated in a big way this month. Personally my confidence has never been higher. This is the right way to build a game for the long term, and as others try to do what ED has already done I think folks will begin to realise just how big of an achievement it is.

Let others hype. We can play.

Oh and THARGOIDS!

How do you come to that conclusion? Because FD just using the same information policy they used the last years?
Seriously they always are rather quite on stuff, until they are confident in what they got and ready to keep for a release. That stuff was everything in 2.2 they were confident to tell us.

We had the same for 2.1 and every update before that. Only informations regarding coming update, and rather tide lipped beyong that if it isnt a headline feature.

Its hilarious how people cry because of a 3 month delay of 2.1...the only real "big" delay we had so far in EDs development and its already doom and gloom...ask SC how many delays they had...ask NMS how many delays they had..ect.
Its just ridicilious concluding ED is in a "bad place" because of that...FD is not a development studio that exist only since ED...

Well, yeah, they've only showed the development they're confident with, hence the conclusion.

I believe FDev are going at a slow and steady pace, which I guess can be seen as both a bad and good thing. While yes a part in me is disappointed with not too much changes in gameplay. Passengers and ship launched fighters will be interesting.
Aside from things shown for 2.2, I noticed the dolphin is in FDev's development version of the game, there may be many other things hidden in there too, hell even player avatars may be present but obviously they wouldn't let that slip if it was even in the development version of the game. They could have chosen hype but didn't, im guessing this concretes peoples thoughts on them making sure they can deliver on what they say are coming and not giving details on things to come in say 6 months to a year down the line.

Looking ahead, If they are adding a lot more with what they are promising with delivering, FDev may have a lot more to offer with 2.3 and 2.4. "Space Legs" and avatar creation might even come in the same patch (im not totally up to date with what is coming in 2.4 and 2.3). If thats true then they have a huge workload with creating individual ship interiors, character details both player and maybe NPC avatars for mission boards and even having your fighter pilot NPC's walking around your ship or maybe even just having them in their "quarters" or on the bridge potentially. Maybe even station interiors or something like that despite being possibly small parts of that. This will definitely come with problems with first iterations of creating FPS in a game that to this point has nothing of that sort. It could prove extremely challenging and delays will happen if so.

Hyping that up for what may well be a next year release could backfire. Im happy with how they are approaching their advertising and releases. Just my two cents. Yes im aware my knowledge of things to come are probably wrong or flawed, go easy on me :)

Thanks
