Found something odd. A destroyed moon / planet?

I recorded a video of this with Shadowplay, but it all went wrong - so unfortunately I have nothing to show.

I was in Dahan heading to the Resource Extraction site, when suddenly I got a proximity warning - even though I wasn't near anything, and then I was forced out of supercruise.

I found myself in a massive asteroid field, and I thought at first I was in a planetary ring. However it turned out that was not the case.

The asteroid field was massive, so I set my radar to maximum view. The asteroid field was shaped like a half-sphere. I spent a bunch of time flying around inside the field and looking. I even recorded on the video it relative location to the other planets in the system. Unfortunate I don't have those details now.

Eventually I flew outside the field and looked back, and it was indeed a huge asteroid field shaped as a half-sphere. It looked a little like a destroyed moon / planet.

Has anyone else come across this?

See if you can find it again, then take pics.
I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I am sure many would be interested in pictures.

I really wish I did have pictures or video to show. It's immensely frustrating. Basically Shadowplay recorded the desktop on my 2nd monitor as opposed to the game. This was because I had the Oculus Rift running...

FRAPS is your friend :)

You can press F10 to take a pic, you'll find them in your Saved Games folder.

I suspect that what you were seeing was a ring, they are quite thick.

If you were near the edge, and the ring field is larger than your scanner, then when you zoom your scanner out you'll see half a sphere, the edges of the sphere are just the limit of the scanner range.

Sounds like a plausible explanation?

I'm not at my ED machine right now, perhaps someone else will test what a zoomed out radar looks like in the rings?

Could be that you flew near a planets dark side so couldn't see it. Been there, done that too.. also the damn asteroid ring was nigh on pitch black, which meant getting out was... interesting too.

There is a nicer way to say that ... for example ...

I'm not saying he's lying though, I will give him the benefit of doubt.

"Pics, or it didn't happen!"

I actually believe him, though. Might have been a bug, or a glitch showing something the procedural generator can generate, but what was not supposed ot be there (or no one knew yet).

100% wasn't a ring.

Also wasn't a planet.

It was densely packed asteroids, I flew through them. They were clustered together in a sphere, not a ring.

Wish I could get back there. I would have pressed F10, but I had the Rift on and was relying on Shadowplay. :(

I've found a hemisphere too!

Could it be just a really large asteroid belt, but since our scanners can't see the edges it just looks like a sphere on the scanner?
