I've been around the forums enough to see both arguments coming out of the same people keyboards.

Bomba/Yaffle, this would be great, but completely flies in the face of human nature. People don't have to wait for rare allocation, but they do and lets take a look at how healthy that little niche of the game is doing? People didn't have to grind for engineer mats just because it was there, but they did. The argument that people can just keep doing other stuff is unrealistic and more than slightly naïve.
Isn't the game so far perfect proof that not having instant ship transport works fine for a game? I'm bit baffeld how the big convenience feature of shiptransport only taking half the time and happenig in the background while you do whatever is not not enough and would ruin the game somehow because its not instant.

My idea is that the game mechanic

a) Plots a route (in "economic" mode) to the destination and calculates the time based on that
b) Does not allow transfer if no possible route can be found (e.g. jump range to small).
c) Naturally, this would also mean ship transfer has a maximum range of 1000 Ly, which conveniently means that no, you cannot travel in your empty grade 5 Farseer'ed Anaconda to Jaques and then have your FDL delivered there.

repped. have you considered sending a job application to frontier?

Travelling through space is the game
Actually Sandro's original plan for the game skipped the whole travelling through space bit entirely. Really the game is about the stuff that happens in between that travelling, or at least it's supposed to be. Although I am a fan of travelling about in games for the sake of it. One of my fondest memories was owning a boat in Ultima Online and sailing from port to port selling clothes I made.. Ahh good times.

So, how do you cope at the moment? I assume you still play, so how do you cope with not having it? If you want to sit and stare waiting, that's fine, but as I keep being told about the instant process you don't have to do that. Odd how it can be ignored one way but not the other.

Agree with all, except the plotting in economic mode, I'd go with "fastest" route. Nobody uses economic mode to travel anywhere.
I think someone loaded up his T9 with all fuel tanks in every slot and then got in deep space to see how far he can get with economic jumps.

... not sure he did stick with it till the End :D

As stated before, if it wasn't advertised as "instant" to begin with, everybody would just be happy it comes... but now? Yea.

I'm aware. I was there and opposed micro-jumps. Quite happy with SC.
Is it the destnation or is it the journey?
Frankly it's both but if there is no significance to travel then there may as well only be one system.

Because you have it wrong, it's not "immersion over fun", it's "immersion equals fun"... big difference.
For me convenience = fun as well. *shrug* this is a different strokes for different folks situation. These types of debates will go on forever, just like the open vs. PG vs. solo; neither side will be swayed.

That being said, please don't think of my opinion as looking down on yours; I do understand that for some folks being fully immersed in a sim is their fun and I respect that. If a mod would please delete it, it has no contribution to the debate.

Come on Pecisk, that is the most recent information we have, there is nothing coming out of Frontier to suggest they have changed their minds and 'instant' was clearly their first thought on the matter.
True, there's no clear confirmation to this other than Gamescom streams and videos, but there has been no time for Sandro to pour trough feedback. I am still convinced lack of word 'instant' indicates they want to keep options open and see what they can figure out in few weeks left to beta and during beta. If I am wrong, hey, it will be instant, but I wouldn't think FD will ignore some good feedback on this thread.

I stay in one spot. That's how I 'cope'. Sometimes I go somewhere, but rarely. The different ships add so much life to Elite that I like to have them available. As I said, it's human nature. It isn't a problem because it isn't an option, make it an option and it'll be a problem.

Counter argument, why not just set a timer and wait for your ship to 'arrive'.

Flies in the face of human nature? Yet I am pretty sure the people requesting a realistic travel time are not Thargoids...

Usually I'd agree, problem is, this game was made for - and with significant financial support of - those same players that prefer this kind of immersion... I think people keep forgetting that this is a kickstarted game, and it only came about because of FD's original design ideas... ideas they are apparently doing a U turn on now. That IS kinda serious for some of us...

I'm not saying this to be smug or anything, mind you, I'm just stating the facts... ED is not a purely corporate product, it's - in no small part - community designed... or it was, at least.

It's the destination, and that bit about one system, what codswallop. I've never been to France and likely never will, it may as well not exist is what that means. Well, except to the other people who like France. Glad you enjoy the journey, I don't want to take it away from you, stare at that static skybox for as many hours as you want, just don't make me do it.
