I wanted to buy some Federation ships but then...

So I'm back to this game after a year and I see all those new beautiful ships and I'm so excited ! I've been Empire pilot before so I immediately wanted to go for a Cutter but everyone says it's a big cow with no punch so... Why not try a few Federation ships for a change? Corvette looks sweet, so I log in, and see my Fed rank to be... a recruit. Well no biggie then I remember levelling up to baron wasn't that big of a deal so I started doing missions... any missions at first, hauling, kill missions etc., then for the sake of efficiency data carrying missions, then I start stacking them up by switching Open/Solo... after a couple of hours I look at my progression bar and its 70%... All right, time to bring out the heavy guns and google a levelling tutorial, maybe I'm just stupid and they've added something to this game and doing missions is not the way to lvl up ranks anymore but nope. NOPE. Seems like grinding is the only way to do it, and let me tell you the actual grinding itself with a grinder is more fun than hauling data packets back and forth being interdicted every 2 minutes for my cargo which is none because I'm carrying those stupid data packets. After some time since evading interdiction is impossible (if you run the fkr is just going to interdict you 10 seconds later AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN) and some stations are 200,000ls away I just started to kill the process in the task manager because it was more time efficient to log back in and not deal with this crap. So I ended up not caring anymore, after like 5 or 6 years of owning a Sidewinder X4 I finally found some use for those extra keys on the side, they are PERFECT for recording a macro for switching between Open and Solo and going into the mission screen when watching a movie. Then it's just a matter of finding money dumping missions. And I don't even care anymore about money, you need me to dump half a mil? TAKE IT, TAKE IT AWAY FROM ME AND GIVE ME THE RANK. So 10 mil later I'm at Chief Petty Officer and the game has slowly drained my sanity to the point where I'm done, I don't even have the strength to go buy a FAS and outfit it. I can't even imagine the grind and the money it takes to reach Rear Admiral and I honestly hope I will never find out. WHY have you turned this game into a grindfest WHAT IS THE POINT? And the lags and errors in between doing all this money dumping I've been back 3 days and I already think I'm going insane because of this game.

Cutter has no punch.... sure

If you have decent Emp rank, check out the Clipper. It's a pretty darn good ship with excellent flexibility. It can fight, trade and get around pretty well. Use it to work your way, steadily towards the higher ranks.

I've been flying Clipper before I quit, then I switched to Anaconda and sort of lost interest and decided to wait until more fun ships were added to the game but I never expected the grind factor to increase 50 times as well, had I known then I would've lvl'd up my Federation ranks.

If you have reached Chief Petty Officer, you can buy the Federal Assault Ship. I would suggest you do it. The FAS is a great combat ship. It has terrific handling, good fire power and a reasonable cost, just over 19 million for the hull. The FAS can be built into a reasonably good All-'rounder, but it's combat strength is in it's agility and hull. Filling it up with cargo can make it a little less survivable in a RES/CZ. But, with that said you can change up it's load out to best suit your current activity.

Dude I know, that's what I've been grinding for for the past few days, I have the money to buy any ship and outfit most of them, but the point is I can't because of the stupid rank system that forces you to sit on your ass for HOURS switching between sessions in search of those stupid money dumping missions. What is the point of this exactly?? I wish to know what went through the head of the guy who thought this would be a good idea? They might as well save us some trouble and add "refresh missions" or "dump 15 mil to lvl up" buttons.

I'll only say this :

In the far past, handing in Bounty Vouchers was a reasonable way to slowly Rank up without any Grind. Worked for both Empire and Federation Ranks - like a charm.
The official stance was "they're looking for Combat Pilots anyway, thus Combat actions yield the best Ranking advancement".

But since they changed it :
- handing Bounty Vouchers doesn't do anything anymore
- neither does handing in Intel Data Packages, although they sound like they have a Military significance

The Result :
- Ranking only works as a primary activity, requiring relocation into an appropriate System and living with the RNG? percentage of Rank Progression, whatever those Missions yield
- a mighty 1M Cr Donation appears to do the same like a 25k Cr Donation for Rank Progression
- a 140LY 180ton LR ELITE Ranked Delivery Mission can yield less % progression than a 15k local area Courier run to a next-door System
-> all not very helpful for CMDRs wishing to advance in Rank - and probably absolutely grind'ish for anyone normally preferring other Gameplay and other locations and being forced to witness the painfully slow progression

I liked the old System better; occasionally hand in accumulated Federation/Empire Bounties and at some point seeing those Rank Progression offers pop up eventually.

Yeah the easy money won't buy rank, you actually have to put some effort into that.

You should get on to FD support and ask for the instant win button.

Yeah the easy money won't buy rank, you actually have to put some effort into that.
WHAT EFFORT? All I've been doing all day is switching between Solo and Open and seeing my bank account slowly go empty and the progress bar filling up even slower. There is no effort, there is only the mindless grind. Had it actually been FUN I wouldn't mind spending a few days levelling up, but for now it's just sad and boring. And the system is just broken to the point where I might actually write an AHK script to switch me between Open and Solo and look for the cheap donation missions and let it run over night because the actual writing of the script will be more fun and I'll feel like I've actually accomplished something instead of feeling like having my brain sucked through my ears.

I don't mean to be rude dude but have you read anything after the first couple of sentences because Cutter's PVP performance is not the focus of the story here...

Your wall of text makes reading quite a chore.

I think your main problem is that you want your rank and you want it now, or preferably yesterday.
I have been working towards a Corvette for many months myself now.
It simply takes time and I accept that for what it is. This is a game for the long term.

I shifted the bulk of my activities to Federal space and am now close to post captain.
But currently I am doing some long distance trade missions in Imperial space.
So climbing the Federal ranks will have to wait for a while.
I do not expect to get a Corvette before the end of the year. But so what.
I do what comes to mind and I do it when I want to do it.
I am not going to grind myself to hell just because I must have a certain ship now.
That is not the way to play ED.

Or, play the game with the ships available to you, and gain rank as you go. Insisting on one ship, that is out of your reach will only frustrate you. What would you tell me if I had Vice Admiral Fed rank, and not enough credits to buy a 'Vette, then came on here to complain of the arbitrary costs of ships. That they should be lowered so I could afford any ship I wanted?

If you choose to sit there and do nothing. I have the Ranks of Duke, and V Adm from just playing the game. No mode swapping, no grinding nothing like that. I just played the game.

Whatever you do or how you do it is your own choice, but you still have to put the time in or just forget about it and play the game.

It's not meant to be done in a day.

A wonderfully trite response, I don't think the OP wants to do it in a day, or a week even, just that the pace is far too slow. The carrot is on much too long a stick as it were, so long that the horse gives up hope. He's probably right and having done the climb to Rear Admiral legitimately it was lengthy, really lengthy, too much for anyone not having at least a dozen hrs a week to focus on faction missions to obtain in less than a few months without resorting to mode switching.

I think my problem is that doing what I like I will never progress even 1% and that makes me a slave of the mission mechanics which I don't like one bit.

I did not know that about the bounties.
That really is a shame and it makes no sense either.
Are you sure?

And what about combat bonds?
