Well it's official I'm the worst elite player

Well good news I made my first big voyage from the starting system to wyla platform it was about 10 jumps I would have run out of fuel but luckily my last jump contained the reily Hub and was able to fuel up long story short I managed to jump to the correct system with almost no fuel left and cash the mission in for a cool 20k profit now with all this money and Lady Luck on my side I see a mission to kill pirate lord that I meet the requirements for even though I want to become a pirate at some point I've decided I'm gonna kick his ass

OP, it was three months and many deaths in a Sidewinder, Cobra, Viper, Vulture, Clipper and FDL before I became 100% comefortable docking. Three months of ramming and pancaking in multimillion dollar ships. Now it's second nature, and I'm a pretty good PvPer. We all learn the hard way. =]

i hope the pirate lord isnt on anaconda or some other big ship :)

My entire goal in this game has always been to protect myself from my own stupidity. I felt that meant shields strong enough to boost into anything, because I follow the ABC's, Always Be cBoosting. Now that I have those shields, the new goal is to tank my rep with Empire so hard that I cannot land at their stations, mostly because they are filthy, lice infested aristocrats.

Eh.

Eheheheheh.

Can I give you some very, very specific advice about this point in your commander career?

If you haven't taken that assassination mission yet, don't take it.

If you have taken the pirate mission, look left at your transactions tab, select that mission and abandon it.

That pirate lord is almost certainly going to be flying an Anaconda, one of the biggest ships in the game. Your Sidewinder won't have a snowball's chance in hell against it.

If you've already taken the mission, and already tried to complete it...

Well, I guess you learnt another new thing <_<;

Killing pirate lords isn't the easiest of missions I think. I'd recommend doing some trade missions, or 'deliver boom data' (or whatever it's called) from systems that are in a boom-state. They can fetch a nice sum.
Then try to get your hands on an Adder or Cobra and do some rare trade runs. There are systems selling rare goods, highlited in the commodities section. The farther out you sell them, the bigger the profit. If you're just starting out, those profits are really big. You just gotta find out where they're selling rares.
and watch out for pirates. Cobra's are faaaaaast, you can boost away when interdicted. That makes it the best ship at the start for these kind of runs.

Anyway, I used to use this chart for my rare trade runs:

Good luck cmdr! O7

...and if you happen to drop into a Low Signal Source and see lots and lot of gold. RUN! It's a trap.

Good job, OP!

You might want to hold off on that pirate lord for a while... then again... no risk, no reward :)

Just keep in mind what others have told you.

I tried to land my shieldless mining Python last night without putting my landing gear down, even though we get both a verbal warning and an on-screen message to alert us to the fact. Hull damage ensued.

@OP - when you read that bear in mind I have assets of over a billion credits and over 1,000 hours in the game. Trust me, we're all hopeless sometimes. Half the players on the forum would tell you stories about accidentally flying their sidewinders into the side of the station, getting blown apart for trying to land on the wrong pad, panicking whilst trying to avoid doing that and accidentally boosting into the back wall, or another ship, or both on a good day, etc, etc. Whatever the absolute worst fail you feel you've had is, you can bet that someone has already done it and someone else has bettered it considerably.

At least you didn't paint in the insides of the station docking bay with 400 tons of delicious Ibootian Fish. I did that in my early days during the Beta. Whoever decided the 'Jettison All Cargo' button should go right next to 'Toggle Landing Gear' is a bad bad man.

If only you knew what I did when I first started. I boosted inside the docking bay and pancaked into the wall twice in a row. My very first delivery mission, I had 8 computer components and was in the docking bay of the mission destination and then I accidentally hit the jettison all button instead of the landing gear button. Try to imagine a Hauler miserably chasing 8 cargo canisters bouncing around the rolling inner barrel of a station in a futile attempt to recover the mission cargo before the landing permission ran out. I lost my shield crashing around into all the buildings and I'd never used the cargo scoop before. I rammed at least one canister until it exploded. It was the definition of a clownshoes moment. I failed the mission of course. And nearly got blown up by station security when my landing permission timer ran out and they told me to get out or be destroyed. I spent at least 30 panicked seconds trying to work out where the exit slot was and even then nearly lost what was left of my hull bouncing off the rack in my desperation to get out. Did I mention I'd accidentally turned off rotational correction too? Yeah. Yeah. Now I... I... really was terrible.

I can actually picture this vividly. It's a really funny picture. :D

Great thread! Hopefully you are encouraged. Good job making it 20 ly. My first trip left me orbiting a sun with no fuel and no scoop. Just prior to leaving on that trip I found a wanted ship by a mining dock. I couldn't figure out why the other cmdr's weren't attacking it so I did. I killed it. BTW there is a "no fire" zone around docking stations, who knew. I was inside that distance and I ended up with a bounty because I attacked him first along with the fine for firing in the no-fire zone. Months after all that I finally got my Asp and set out to be the explorer of all explorers. I pointed my self at a Nebula set thrusters to 10 and blasted off exploring every system and every planet along the way. Found a Black hole too. Went in for a closer look. And closer... Suddenly everything got visually distorted. Supercruise suddenly shutdown. Alarms went off. And I was inside the blasted thing. Visions of loosing hours of exploration data and my shiny new Asp flashed through my head. Something else flashed through the underside of my space suit. After I got out and change clothes I casually headed back to "safe" space. And then there was last night. Hauling illict cargo in aforementioned ASP, I came into the space station a little hot and missed my landing pad. Missed all the others too. With a surge of Adrenalin and a scream I spun 180 degrees in order to avoid a face plant on the back wall. The ship had slowed but was still drifting backwards into the wall. My ninja reflexes kicked in and I punch the booster. Awesome. The back wall was no longer a problem. The front wall however was growing at an alarming rate. Once again I try my 180 degree flip. I only made it 90 degrees before belly flopping into the wall just below the entrance. Lost all shields and 50% hull. Fortunately they had repairs there.

Keep your chin up. But not too high. sometimes the mail slot is smaller than it looks.

No No No, I am the "WORST" 463 ships lost in the first month ... Wait it's not win or lose, but are you having fun - yes I am...

Thank everyone I didn't go through with the pirate lord mostly cause my controller died and I had real life stuff to take care of anyways I had did have a fun journey dropping off the boom data just barley making it with enough fuel

When I started I was so bad I had to stop playing for a week to get a joystick/throttle set up, after that arrived I set off for a more distant system to wit for the 8 day dormant bounty to expire that I had got for really messing up docking, don't ask how because I don't know. A few systems in I found out I had misread the map and the system I had arrived in didn't have anywhere to refuel so I ended up staring at the ice crystals forming on my canopy as I slowly asphyxiated. Now I am a much better pilot and still making mistakes.

I suggest you consider visiting the NAV beacon then watch for the cops engaging some NPC, target the NPC and if he is wanted wait till he is nearly done for then carefully shoot him a couple of times, count 8 seconds and if he is still there do it again. This should earn you the bounty on him do this until you have around 10k then head back to the station to cash the bounties in.
Once you have enough money start upgrading the internals of your Sidwinder, you want to fit D grade stuff first as that will make you faster, more economical and with a longer jump range.

I wish the forums allowed enough characters to tell you every stupid thing I have done over my career. Early on you WILL die a lot and WILL make every mistake in the book but keep at it and before long you will wonder how you had so much trouble early on :)

Tip 1 - Do not upgrade that sidey until you have a reasonable chunk of change in the bank as death is free.

Tip 2 - The exception to tip 1. Get a cheap fuel scoop as soon as you can afford one. Fuel is free and plentiful once you have a scoop.

Tip 3 - Never, ever spend more than 50% of your cash. As soon as you think you are doing good you will do something dumb.

Don't give up, we all absolutely sucked to begin with. It is all about building up enough of a cash buffer to absorb those mistakes even after you have gotten to the point where you think you are good!
