Teamspeak and the all group

As a lone wolf player, someone who comes home from a hard days work just wanting to relax and lose himself in space, but who also wants to experience the liveliness of an online universe, and even the chance to pvp if he's feeling a bit rambunctious, I have a high degree of trepidation of becoming nothing more than cannon fodder for squads of well organized, in communication, professional gamers (like I experienced in War Thunder, and subsequently left.) While I don't want to, and feel it would be a travisty to be forced to do so, I will nonetheless only use single player mode if this is the case.

I'll reply now to the initial obvious advice that will be directed at me: "hey, Suul, go find a group, invest in teamspeak, and become something less than cannon fodder." Well, I simply don't want to. I'm not that kind of social player. And I won't whine about it further. Like I said, I'll just play single player, and maturely face that fact that you can't always get what you want. I'm a lone wolf, plain and simple. I like playing in a rich online world of other lone wolfs, where nobody benefits from hunter pack tactics and everybody survives and/or dies upon their own abilites - kind of like the initial release of Battlefield 1942 way back when.

I don't begrudge anybody the right to form groups and communicate and have a grand old time of it, but I truly believe that one should have the option to pick - what do you guys call them "shards" or instances - that either have teamspeak or not. I think that instead of squads mauling lone players with little to no chance of surviving such well organized onslaughts, squads should be made to face the challenge of going against other squads... and perhaps any lone wolfs who opt in, considering themselves bad____ss enough to compete is that environment.

Options. I think it's warrented here. This is just one man's opinion. I'd like to hear yours on the matter.

Once voice comms are in you'll be able to radio other ships in your instance.

Your CMDR might make a friend and team up for a bit even?

It's too much to hope that all that voice comms will stay in character though. Nothing ruins my sense of verisimilitude than having to hear about how great the weekends football was.

Football?

Just imagine they are on about current (ingame) sport, for immersion to work in an online game you have to be able to give and take a few things.

May I suggest some form of communications like teamspeak or Skype Mumble Google talk most commanders seem to be using teamspeak .
Later on their will be in game comms .
In teamspeak there are always players willing to help and go in to chat and game with you how ever you want to play .

There is a list of of teamspeak servers in my sig .

It's mainly the cannon fodder issue that concernes me. Even if you're a skilled pilot and manage to take down 1 or 2 of a wolf pack, you're most likely going down in the end, and loose all you've worked for if your insurance is running low... if I understand insurance correctly.

I should add that, unexperienced with any form of teamspeak, I'm under the impression that only squad members can communicate with each other. If it's going to be different in ED when comms are added, I'll just have to wait and see what it's all about, as my understanding of the comms system yet to be employed is fairly lacking.

Well, the galaxy will be too big for pirate packs to be everywhere. I expect that the lone wolf player would just pay attention to where and how they travel. Favouring either busy, safe places or out of the way places that hunters would not target. I think this is the way of the lone wolf - not travelling through known danger areas with a sign saying "I'm a lone wolf! But don't target me!".

I also think it would be useful if the AI interacted with player activity - just like a dynamic market but for pirate activity. So you would have AI mercenary missions to target areas of increased pirate activity - with increasingly rich rewards - based on perhaps the cost of insurance payouts incurred in a given area. Or likewise AI warnings of dangerous area.

When we have 400 billions of systems, it will be easy to avoid crowded places and find your own cool place, far far away, which will only be yours and you will meet a visitor player once in a year.

The majority of those 400 billion systems will not be inhabited as I understand it. Much of the galaxy will be an unknown and a target for budding explorers.

I'm not much of a fighter and mainly interested in trading, possibly some mining when it is enabled. I have been interdicted a few times while on trading runs but have found it relatively easy to just run away - boost then engage Supercruise as soon as practically possible! A couple of times damage has been done but at least I've been able to get repaired.

I have played alone so far and probably will most of the time, having played the same way in other games for years - more recently in World of Warcraft. I think as long as you are careful about what areas you travel through, it's not a great problem - I even risked a trip to the Anarchy system a few nights ago without any real problems.

Learning to read the radar is important too - to know the differences between NPCs (solid) and human players (hollow), weapons deployed (triangles) and weapons not deployed (squares). While I'm still in the basic Sidewinder with minimal weapons I have no qualms about running away from attackers, especially if there are a few of them. In a better ship with more weapons I may do better.

I believe voice comms within the game will come in future but of course if you don't want to talk to other players, that's your choice - nobody insists that you do, but it can make encounters more interesting if you can communicate.

I can imagine single player mode becoming extremely boring very quickly, though I am not sure how it will be implemented - hopefully more than the single player scenarios on offer now!

I do hope you will change your mind about multiplayer, and find it's not as bad as you imagined! ;)

Those are good points about the size of the gameworld, and the probable rarity of meeting up with PCs let alone coordinated squads. Thinking about it, it'll probably be mosty NPC interaction. I think I'm stuck in the mind frame of games like War Thunder and Battlefield 2/3 where you're placed in a confined battlespace in close contact with professional gamer squads. But you guys are right when you point out that ED will be a whole different ballgame.

Btw, I have no problem with universal comms, and will happily engage in it if there's a way to do so like chat or pre-defined messages. It's just private, squad comms and tactics being employed against me I don't want to get bogged down with.

This could be countered with a Roleplaying Server.;)
