Coordinate system is garbage.

I have a couple of these tip off missions about a crashed something or another on planet this or that. Decided to do one and flew all the way out there where I spent nearly 30 minutes flying around the planet trying to find the spot. I either find lattitude and try to stay the course but then cant find longitude without overshooting lattitude and vice versa. I decided to give up and just go back home.

Im not doing these tip off missions anymore, and ones that come up will just get deleted asap. Love the concept, but its just not worth the hassle. Why the hell cant we just open Planetary Map and find the spot and fly towards a way point? With all the technology available in this game you'd think the coordinate system would be a heck of a lot easier to use.

Of course Im sure I'll get the "git gud" and "learn to fly noob" comments. I hope 2.2 makes finding spots on planets easier because frankly I totally regret buying Horizons at this point.

Huge update to the planet surface map coming in 2.2 which may help. I'm still hoping it comes with a set your own marker system but I may be disappointed.

Generally I fly along the orbit line first to get the horizontal number near enough and then do the vertical one. I usually wiggle up/down when flying level with the orbit line to work out if I'm orientated correctly with north above me or not as it's unclear which is up on the planet.

Aim to drop out into glide with approx 1.5 of the number to travel so i can micro adjust the distance on the way down. Takes some practice and is easier in smaller faster turn rate ships but after 3/4 attempts it's pretty smooth provided I take my time and don't try to rush...

Option to view planet coords on the System map based on the cursor position over the planet surface with an option to place own (temporal/permanent) marker will be really nice. I was looking for the exact coords on the surface just once and it was a lot of fiddling with the ship course. It was possible, but definitely not the most user-friendly experience I had.

This is a good idea....

Just like the orbital lines in SC.

Having the option to turn on major Lat/Lon lines would be good. Not every single increment, but maybe every ten degrees or so.

On a real ship, I'd enter the coordinates and let auto pilot take me there. We need the ability to set coordinates and have compass show the way

I'm surprised that didn't add the feature to set coords on the fully rendered landable planets. It just makes sense to do that. I have a feeling it will come at some point in the future though.

I like doing them, they are kind of relaxing.

Here's how I go about it, dropping down to get a compass bearing and then going back up for travel speed. Works well enough, I always find the thing.
