The Fiction of Ship/Module Transfer

This is not an instant or not opinion thread! Please scoot off to one those instead if you want to debate that. :D

Assuming ship/module transfer is implemented as intended what's your preferred fiction for how they arrive at your current location?

Any time for your chosen method takes is an accepted anomaly, unless you want to bake instant transfer into your fiction of choice.

The obvious versions that spring to mind in no particular order are:

1. 3d printing your ship/modules with the vast resources station have at their disposal
2. Ships are transferred in massive cargo ships
3. Parker, your driver, delivers them to you
4. Ships are slaved to a master ship and transported in heavily guarded 'shoals'. These travel the main hyperspace routes, with ships breaking off to complete the last few hops to specific locations with a small security chaperone

I dislike the 3d printing option, unless someone can expand up on it. If stations can manufacturer anything, then supply limited shipyards and outfitters don't make sense.

I favour 2 & 4, as they'd both provide sightseeing and game play opportunities. Especially huge cargo ships. :)

In point of fact: they don't make sense... beyond the idea that there are only Toyota cars at the Toyota dealership. Nothing to do with what *can* be there, but with what they do sell.

It [limited ship types at shipyards] is a gameplay decision with no basis in realism.

If I were to hang a lampshade on it: I would say that the shipyard only had license to print those ships.

It is done via 3D printing. From this big angsty thread.

Was there a comment about the availability of ships in shipyards?

Hi! Can I buy a Conda please?
We don't sell these.
Well, order one to be delivered instantly.
They don't have a valid license to create the ship, the ship transfer does.

Print based manufacturing has been part of the fiction for some time - it's hardly that big a stretch considering we're already looking at it.

Not really - it's down to the facilities they have and the ship manufacturers - it's not a machine that spits out ships - more like a larger process.

Besides in this case the convenience of the feature means that a little look away is required, in the same way that we don't make you wait for cargo to be unloaded.

Utilising Quantum entangled handwavium embedded in Pilot Federation license carried by Commanders, currently used to imprint an exact replica of their ship at point of death, enabling its restoration upon Commander rescue, is now enhanced to cover all ships in a pilots fleet.

Combined with the latest advances in quantum printing this has allowed the deployment across all shipyards of the ability to recreate any of the pilots ships.

Scientists have demonstrated this amazing leap forward in technology by transporting a Sidewinder from Eravate to Shinrata Dehzra. The costs associated with this dramatic technology are greater than standard insurance for recovery, additionally the original source ship is destroyed as part of the quantum verification of replication.

Due to the scanning resolution limitations, organic and trade materials are unable to be transported via this extraordinary method.

The pilots federation have warmly welcomed this technological breakthrough and are looking forward to early tests on this new service to occur in early October this year.
