Newcomer / Intro Sir Henry Lootgraab's Guide For Noobs: How Not To Rage Quit Elite: Dangerous

So I had a really rough start. I nearly quit the game several times. Thanks to people on this forum I was able to stick to it and made some progress. I have a fully decked out, A-class Asp Explorer and 20 million in the bank and the game has been much easier for me. It took me 200 hours though to get here but I made a lot of mistakes.

Here is a little give back to the community in a form of a short guide, by a noob, for the noobs who are not interetsted in fighting and find the interdcitions and the credit grind frustrating. This describes what I actually did to make the game less frustrating for me. It may not be 100% accurate and coherent but it worked for me. Had I known all this in the beginning, it would not have taken 200 hours.

Please point out errors. I will try to update it a few more times. Thanks to all who helped me out!

Yay! I remember your first post. Somehow I had the feeling that you would stick it out, and here you are. Congrats.

This game gets under your skin, doesn't it?

:)

PS Your guide is great.

Yes. The only game ever that I loved and hated at the same time. I'm looking forward to the future updates and more content. Thanks bunches for the help.

I realized I didn't do the links properly. Will fix later.

What an entertaining read! :)
Well done. I think this might actually be the right perspective and approach.

Thanks:) Still needs some fixes.

Thanks for taking the time to write this guide. Very helpful for this noob. [up]

So far, I've got about 5 hours or so on my first playthrough, after spending a bunch of hours running through the basic tutorials on launching, docking, traveling and target practice. I'm still in my starting Sidewinder, though I've put a few minor upgrades on it (a B-class power distributor - I wanted the A but the station I was at didn't have any - and D-class thrusters). So far I've got about 100.000 CR in the bank, running boom data jobs, plus one bring some fish to a station run. I've been interdicted twice - the first time I submitted and then fled, the second time I tried to fight but ended up having to bail as I lost about 50% of my hull. But I survived both times.

My next goal is to get up to about 500K CR and get my Cobra Mk III. I'll probably do trade runs with it, slowly upgrading along the way until I can fit it out as a decent explorer. Then off into the deep!

Cobra is a very decent explorer.
Just sayin' :)

Happy to hear that. Do not give up.

I just added one important bit that I forgot about: if you decide to run missions then run one mission at a time. Do not stack missions. FD support actually confirmed this. This was one of my biggest mistakes. I had lots of missions stacked up and was interdicted pretty much on every jump.

I like the cut of your jib, sir. I've made numerous mistakes but it's all a process and I'm yet to hit a point which has made me hate the game. There have been many occasions when I've just quit to play something else to calm down but usually through my own stupidity/not concentrating.

Rep for you for that noobs guide though.

rep +1

well done a great read!

and like Chris said the Cobra III is a good exploration ship, I had mine to Jacques and picked up 2 ranks to Pathfinder.
you need a great fuel scoop and you can get there. I did it with no shields and 40 tones of cargo... not saying anyone else ever should, this is a rather nerve racking configuration [where is it] ;)

adding my config I will never use again... ok well maybe :p

https://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk....Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==?bn=crazy Cobra pilots only

one more add on ;
this is a cool ship just love the look, this is military red, but even in this color the Cobra looks good to me :)

Oh yeah, I've been reading up on it - can't wait until I can get my first one and start making an explorer out of it. :D

Didn't get very far last night - the mission boards and commodities markets were pretty dead in my area, plus I had to try and track down an annoying PC problem that was causing the game to minimize on approaches to stations. I figure it's some background app messing things up, so I went through my start up folder and disabled some stuff there, and figured while I was at it I may as well update my video card drivers. Anyway, I'll try it again here shortly and hope I got the offending app.

OP here. Thanks all! For the kind words and for all the help. I expanded the part on mines as they are now the key to my survival strategy as a trader and an explorer. I've been doing well. I have not been destroyed for couple of weeks now. Well, except for one stupid mistake when I let my ship idle inside the station and they blasted me to oblivion, LOL :D

I even survived being interdicted by a bounty hunter in a Python. I let a small fine expire and they put a 12,000CR bounty on me, ha ha ha! I only made it out with 30% of my hull left but I destroyed the Python with mines. I was in an Asp Exp with 5A shields though, so the shields held up for long enough to let me spam enough mines.

The game becomes a lot more fun as you have more options and some CR in the bank to survive any mishaps. I'm less afraid to try out new things now. I even went bounty hunting for the CG in the Asp Exp, but it was too late, last two days. I took an Eagle for a spin around a Coriolis type station's exterior. You can actually fly through all the tight spaces between the station's structure. It was cool!

Today, I'll be prepping for and starting my journey to Jaques and collecting exploration data for the new CG.

So, to all the newcomers: if you feel this game has "something" in it that draws you to it but you find it very frustrating, kind of love and hate thing, do not give up. Read my guide, it really works and it really becomes easier. Hopefully, you will be able to avoid some of the mistakes I made. If you find my original post from few weeks ago, I was royally mad and angry and ready to uninstall the game. It's much better now.

Cheers!

And regarding the Cobra MkIII. I ignored it at first, thinking that I'd have better chances at surviving in a Viper. That was a mistake. I wasted a lot of time there. Until someone said "get a Cobra MkIII" and I took the time to study and to understand the ships specs. I probably spent most of my time in the game in a Cobra MkIII. It's great for beginner trading and a very capable explorer. Plus, it's the best ship to run away from interdictions. Put couple of mine launchers on it and you should not have too many difficulties surviving interdictions. Only Asp Explorer feels like a significant improvement over Cobra MkIII. Even the Diamondback Exp was kind of underwhelming.

hey! great guide, i guess i'll post that link often. some things are best to learn from people learning :D

three minor things:

1. you have several times spelled interdictions interdicKtions. i like that misspelling, i'd be consistent ;-)

2. "Your best friends are: shields, fast thrusters, point defenses and mines. "

i personally would add powerdistributor to this list ... for constant boosting.

3. "During the grinding period use all your utility mounts for point defenses. " - pointing out the importance of point defenses is spot on --- but i fail to see why you want more then 1 on a small ship or 2 on a larger one?

___

as a rare goods trader by heart, i'm happy to see you found use for them in early game. spawn (and maximum allocation) depends on economic states of factioms in system. basically you want the station controlling faction in boom - check it out the next time you trade some kamitra cigars!

1. LOL, yeah, interdicKtions was supposed to be a joke :D I'll get rid of it.
2. I agree about the power distributor. I'll add that.
3. And, like I said, I'm not 100% sure about a lot of it so I figured having more defenses won't hurt since they don't contribute that much to weight and power draw.

I'm also guessing that PDs should have clear line of sight towards the rear so you should consider the hardpoint location, right? I noticed that hardpoint location matters for mines.

And OMG, I profited once 44,000CR per 1T of Leathery Eggs!
