Why do we want to be friends with the aliens?

Hmm...

As opposed to mankind, they might actually be civilized ?!

But the way things usually go, the whole thing is
a) on railroad tracks and
b) all key future events set in stone already anyway
c) ...it'll be all about PewPew as usual. Space Invaders (c)1978 TAITO with updated Graphics.

As Spock would say :
They're intelligent - but not experienced. Pattern indicates.... 2-Dimensional thinking.

PS.
I'd be extremely happy and surprised if FDev would prove me wrong ;)
I'm just not holding my breath for it to happen.

Because there is no benefit in war, but in peaceful coexistence there is. We can learn, trade, take on endeavors together... War will have nothing of that.

War is a serious simulator of technological innovation. It mobilizes workforces, and can serve as a unifying force for peoples involved in the war effort. Important wars often shift the next generation of important political figures to be leaders from those wars, or those who can at least make themselves appear to be leaders from that war - depending, of course, on the outcome.

In order, this means that war can be of benefit to any who can benefit from technological advance, manufacturing centers stalled due to lack of demand, disquieted populations or those embroiled in needless internal conflict, and military minded individuals seeking higher office after winning a glorious war.

We´re humans. All we do is kill what we don´t know or don´t like or don´t understand or want to exploit and a few other reasons. Source: History.
Show me a successful game without combat, competition or a struggle for power. Only a few people wouldn´t find it boring, e.g. in ED the explorers.

However. Either it´s aliens vs humans or some mixture of that. What definetely stays is the "versus".

You want to be friends because you don't know their capabilities. They could be equals to us. They could be ants to us. Or...we could be ants to them.

Basic survival.

They might have a culture incompatible with our own Judaeo Christian values and democracy. For all we know they might eat their children and kill each other for branded products.

I say we exterminate them.

To avoid potential out of context problems ?

Really, a lot of player might assume we'll be the conquistadors, I'm more inclined
to think we'll take the role of the poor aztecs.
Your theory is sound. Since the "winter is coming" phrase has been thrown around. it's safe to assume the Thargoids have some beef with humans. I suspect Jaques Station has something to do with it.

After all many of us have been strip mining many systems in the vicinity to Jaques, in what we thought was an empty sector of space. Perhaps we were wrong.

All speculation aside. if anyone encounters a first contact scenario. Kill them all or get the hell out of there and call for help. This will be a war for the species.

I call on all scientists to get ready to receive tissue samples, even from the scorched remains of humans who have lost their lives in encounters with the aliens. So as to better understand them. Hopefully we can engineer viruses and bacteria capable of reducing the alien population to a more manageable level.

Even zoo keepers can profit from this war eventually, once we establish dominance. perhaps the only way to witness them safely and preserving them before the more military minded extinct them.

Best case scenario would be to implement the more docile of the species into a slave class, if we can manipulate the matriarch to influence the young this is their only chance for survival. Punishments must reflect the confinement. If they rationalize like we do their history and achievements must be eradicated or at least misdirected to the credit of humans Worst case is their extinction.

It is true we in general do not eat each others children, but we love to massacre them.
Not to eat them afterwards is just a matter of convention.
Perhaps it could be considered more ethical to not let the meat waste away.

Killing each other for branded products is what we do all the time. Mostly by proxy of course...

I keep reading threads about how we should be careful when approaching any potential alien encounters. About how we should nurture our relationships with them and we can all be friends. Where's the fun in that? I've a combat kitted 44ly DBX ready to go and I'm going to shoot on sight any pesky alien creatures - it's the human way. After all, we've all been crying out for more danger haven't we? From tomorrow, I'm off with my futuristic pickaxe and torch and I'm going to hunt these pesky critters down, shoot first, and not even bother to think later. I don't want a relationship with an alien that involves travelling halfway across the galaxy to trade some coffee for green algae. I want to fight them! It's survival of the fittest and I'm going to start a WAR! Mwha hahahahaha!

1. If Elite was real life, would that still stand?
2. Have you ever seen Battlestar Galactica (the reboot)?
3. what about all that alien tech you could trade for?
4. Ever had any alien tushy?

I don't know about you guys but I'm looking forward to sitting in a hub somewhere talking to some new guys about the great war between our race and the -insert catchy mega alien beatbox name- and how as we stomped the ever loving crap out of whom ever. and their dying words are that they were running from -insert even badder of badassness alien name that when uttered makes a little poop come out- and that we're most definitely next.
