Who will be the hero?

Hello CMDR's,

Today I want to talk about a subject that I have been pondering for quite some time now...

First of a caveat: When I 'you' I mean 'me and the average player'. I am not saying you are all bad players with the IQ of a bio-waste container!

Lets start by taking a look at one of the more interesting things we have in the game, Unknown Artefacts. They are great fun and as far as I can tell no-one hates them... (I know I will be proven wrong on this!).

The Cannon group have done and continue to do amazing research into these items, their origin's and their purpose. All of which is great for the story of Elite as it should/could lead to our old enemy the Thargoids. The work they have done is quite remarkable with FD not exactly making it easy for them.

Now we are in Season 2 and we have been told that this year we will find out more about the generation ships and what happened to them. No I suspect that FD will also make this a real puzzle which will take some time and brain power to uncover but in true community spirit there will be players who crack the mystery and uncover the locations of these deep space colonies/wreaks.

We also have the Billionaires treasure hunts which to be honest unless you have been on University Challenge you have little to no hope of solving. I watch the last one and still to this day I do not fully understand how people got these clues – Well done to those of you that did!

The first two points are, to me, part of the 'story' being told in this iteration of Elite, not so much the third and it is those I wish to now focus on...

For the majority of players that visit here or the forums they will get to find out about new discoveries/information/theories but what about those players who do not come here or to that other site?

Now that 'other' game (And I do not want the focus of this discussion to be about it either) has Squadron 42 to ease the player into the game and give them a story to work through. This sets the stage for the bigger 'open' game in the 100 or so systems available.

Question: Should Frontier consider having a hand crafted story mode to allow all players to uncover the 'story so far' so to speak?

As always keep it clean and have fun!

Question not valid.
.
Only one game actually exists as a game.

Not sure if you spotted the part where I said I do not want this to become about the other game. This is about the large story Elite is trying to tell and if there should be a story mode for all players to get a sense of inclusion and achievement.

Question is valid.

EDIT: +Rep for the good reply bellow ;)

While I am certainly not of the groupthink that Frontier is doing an amazing job with the "make your own story" line of thought I also don't believe that they specifically need or should develop a single player campaign to support some type of in-game lore. The lore is being delivered to us via Frontier's tools, aka the Galnet and it's on the player to decide whether or not they wish to be a part of that story. Yeah, it's lacking the feedback from the game that we, as players, have come to expect from 99% of games but it's also not ruining the game when there is no positive feedback. It's something I for sure have had to adjust to a bit and it hasn't come with it's fair share of burnouts on my part where I set the game down for a few weeks due to boredom.
.
Using "that other game" at all isn't the way to go about this if you ask me, even when it's only the faintest of comparisons. The majority of big games use some type of story element to goad the player on. Frontier has chosen to do this in their own way and the players who take the time to become involved in their methodology will prosper from it while the rest, who choose to just jump along for the ride will benefit from the galnet and the hard work other players have put in before them.
.
A: We don't need a hand crafted single player experience, but that's just my opinion on the matter.

I'd like some sort of way to quickly recap the games history.
Not a story mode game, but some sort of intro movie, or animation.

I currently have no idea what's happened or happening in the galaxy, because to find out, I need to read 483,382 galnet articles, or 193,293,294 separate forum threads. :D

I always thought it would be nice for galnet to have "The History of.." videos, with a short narrative, and they can be about the human race to date, the Federation, Empire, Alliance, Thargoids, UAs and all that stuff.

I wouldn't mind if they were basic graphic novel style, much like Guild Wars 2, or Homeworld.

Hello Bran. I think it should be a nice idea in the future that FD make some sort of scripted campaign to help people have a better understanding of what comes around them. A rookie pilot can rapidly be overwhelmed by this huge galaxy. If i remember well in the 1984 elite game, a short scripted campaign (missions for the space navy) took place helping people to understand what was going on.

As a ten year plan game, it should be possible then an entire season will be done like this ;)

A story mode would result in the CMDR being something special, something I think it exact the opposite of what this game is about.

What I think would be cool would be handcrafted missions that give the player some insight into the game lore depending on location for those who are interested. These could be chained missions with a few steps. Nothing along the lines of "save the world" or "be the first to find the aliens".

There are a lot of little stories that can be told - similar to the Elite stories in the booklets that once came with the games.
Why is the Empire the way it is, what is the Federation and why does the Alliance exist.

These things could be explained by short mission arcs that explain things without being directly about those things.

I don't think it even needs a "story" mode. All it needs is a sticky Galnet update on the story so far. In game awareness of what's happening and where.

Known UA systems could have a filter on the map. Probes too. Once it's common knowledge it would be good for that Intel to leak out into the wider world.

Also I was of the opinion the 28 th thing was a Red Herring but was still curious. Turns out I was right. Depressingly it's becoming obvious that there is nothing behind the curtain until it's time for lights out.

I'm happy to be proved wrong but I suspect I won't be.

Story ?

Yeah, rumors have it that supposedly there's a story.
Those using external Image-, Video- and Audio analysis tools seem to be able to decode and read tiny parts of it once in a while.

I've looked all around my Ships and checked Outposts, Stations and Planetary Bases. None of them offer any such facilities.
That's okay though. I wouldn't want to read a book at the speed of 1/2 a Page per year. I don't think I'd find that pacing any interesting.

I don't think they have to make a hand-crafted story mode though it would be nice (it could end in your ships destruction and you starting in a sidey :D).

However, I would like to see more story-driven content. For example, at the moment I'm trying to raise rep with the Empire so I can get the Courier once the Morai CG ends (from 300k to 12m CR tyvm); and to be honest, it's a little tedious - despite how I try to RP it ( see sig :p ). In this instance, story-driven content that has you speaking with NPC's, visiting various planets and stations and capital ships in order to expand and further the story along all whilst raising your reputation would be, for me, ideal.

Just out of interest. What is the "story" for real life?

Elite Dangerous is real life?!?

Why didn't someone tell me this before?
I could have been flying my Python for real instead of looking at a computer screen.

Thanks for the update. Time to look for that SRV and hit the recall button. See you out in the real black CMDR o7.

To the point: there should be something in game that lets CMDRs get involved in the unfolding story apart from CGs.

I am afraid your "memory" is not good. There were a few scripted events (cloaking device, supernova rescue, pirate space station), but they didn't come at the start of the game.

sandbox for the win.

craft your own story

I never took part to the Billionaires treasures thing because I always assumed I wouldn't be able to solve them, I suspect you're at a disadvantage if you're not a native English speaker. Plus I'm loaded and it seems that the reward is money, which I don't need. Besides it is usually starting when I'm not in game so the others have a head start. It ends so quickly usually that I don't even bother trying.

So many players, only one winner, this is excellent design if you run a chance game and want to milk the audience. For video games, not that great IMHO. That said, it doesn't hurt my gameplay so I don't really care.

Either I'm missing your sarcasm, or you are missing my point. What I was trying to say was: there is no "story" to what we do in between ED sessions. Granted, what happens now will become ancient history by the time ED is set. But there is no scripted story. What happens, happens. We each play only a small part in this.
