What am I doing wrong for salvage missions?

I've been searching the forums and haven't found much info on my specific problem, so maybe it is just me.

I've been trying to do some salvage missions that the mission board has been offering (not the planetary ones, but the space ones). I figured out that once you open your cargo scoop, ships spawn and attack you. I tried 3 different missions of varying rank and every single time I get a wing of 4 to 6 ships that instantly attack me, and I barely make it out alive. I tried in my Cobra and Python. And this wasn't just 6 sidewinders, these wings have pythons and FDLs in them. My rank is dangerous, and I admit, I am probably not the most skilled pilot out there, but is it even possible to take on 6 ships alone? I figured out that if I get right up against one of the cargo, open my scoop and scoop it, then run, I can get one at a time, jump out and reset to do another. This would be very tedious and in one case I got a wing of 6 lost my shields in seconds and took 200k in damage and barely made it out alive. All this when the USS says 0 threat. Is this working the way its supposed to, or am just missing something?

Also I went in my cobra and just boosted around hoping to stay alive and wait for the police. 2 vipers came, and promptly got destroyed and either I lost the cargo or it timed out. So that doesn't seem like a viable strategy.

Well you are trying to play a high rank mission, they are difficult, I very often get ships spawning and chasing me, try lower rank missions, you will get less ships on you

Had the same, died a few times trying to work it out. Was doing it in an Asp Scout for funsies.
Basically, it's scoop and run and when they get too close you have to leave the system. Then you need to smuggle the goods (like trade data) into a station that can repair you and watch the cops patrol pattern so they don't scan you on the way out.
Then go back and pick up the remaining 2, if you need four like I did.
I got seriously melted twice because my mission was classed as Deadly...I had to think about what I was doing.

Basically, pick up what you can before they appear but once they do, you need to run unless you're in a ship built for speed or have really good shields.
It's not a fight you can win with a regular ship, even semi-modded.
Scoop, run and return.

Side note:
Gravity wells can be present so if you want to scoop easily, get yourself where there's you, the cargo and the centre of the planet. The cargo heads towards the planets centre but if you come at an angle, it can be difficult depending what ship you're in. If you're between the planet and the cargo, trying for it can also be viable.

OP, equip a collector limpet ccontroller (preferably two 3A controllers with two limpets each, if you can manage it).

When you drop in to pick up your salvage, target each mission target and pop a limpet at it. You can practice this by doing it in random USS (and also see the difference in limpet speed and efficiency when targeting vs. non-targeting). Remeber to take enough limpets to grab each required can. I always take double just in case something goes wrong.

You are in a completely defensive stance here. 4 Pips to shields, dropping in to nab the loot as quickly as possible.

Drop, target...pop, target...pop, etc., open cargo hatch, stow weapons, close hatch, wake out.

For added security, have a high-wake preplotted (or at least easily accessible) in case you have company.

If you do it right, you can be in and out of a 4/4 salvage mission USS in 15 seconds.

Exactly what vindelanos said. Collector limpets are your friend.

Silly me always thought they were just for miners. Wasn't until I was having difficulty collecting around a high-G planet that I decided to get them, now don't leave home without them. :)

On another note, it is kinda cool watching how everything plummets towards the planet (including your ship) when the drop out point is close enough to the planet.

I'll try that. I did have a limpet controller, but I got chased before it could even bring one in. I found I could more consistently get 1 if I just had it right in front of me ready to scoop. I did not try targeting it, i'll see how that works.

Cool deal. Use your left-hand contacts menu to select your targets quickly.
