Best moment in the game for you so far?

I spent a while yesterday just parked on a moon base pad, on a very distant moon that took me a good ten minutes to supercruise to, in a frontier system in the Pleiades. I was just watching the ships coming and going and then I saw a space ship flying over at very high level on its way somewhere, I don't know where - possibly the only other base on the moon and the only other base in that system. It was a bit like watching a high cruising jet going over in real life.

And I thought "you know this game ain't half bad, it certainly has it's moments".

Being 50 I don't tend to get immersed in games that much anymore as you tend to get rather jaded by computer games. And in fact that's actually the first time, playing this new game, that I felt some of my original fascination that I had with the old Frontier Elite II when I used to watch an alien sun rise on a planetary base. It was a rather lovely special experience that took my back a few years.

So I thought I would ask what everyone else's best lovely magical moment in the game has been so far, the time when you really felt most immersed in the whole experience of playing?

Fuel rats, all of it. And or that moment every cmdr experiences when you look up, realise 3 days have passed and you've been declared legally dead.
^yes jokes but we have all lost a few hours here or there to Elite we didnt realise :p

Early on it was the big wow of all the cool stuff, hyperspace, stations, etc. The sound design was, and continues to be, amazing. I am actually gutted that I play a lot with the sound almost off so we can watch stuff on the other monitor at the same time.

But I think the most arresting moment for me was the first time my canopy blew in a fight. After the scramble to destroy my attacker, I suddenly realised that most of my HUD was missing. I realised why, and was blown away by that attention to detail. It would have been so easy to write the game such that losing your canopy was instant death, or that you still had the timer but everything was fully functional. Instead, I had to guess that I was flying on target, didn't know whether I was hitting that sweet 7s zone, all against the clock before I ran out of air.

Best recent moment: Landing on a planet for the first time. Man, was I looking forward to that. And don't get me started on Eagle canyon runs...

With Queex, on this - managing to land with a blown canopy and single digits of air left is beyond the buzz I've ever experienced from any game.

Rescuing people with fuel is always good.

But for me, the best moment was landing somewhere out near Sag.A with my best friend. It was like a two man sky...

Best moment for me: Spotting then exploiting really lucrative trade & rank opportunities off my own back i.e. the moment after weeks of play when things start coming together and you reap the rewards. Now I feel I can chill out a lot more and not have to be selective about the return of credits and time investment.

Finding not one, but two ELW with a WW orbiting not too far away either. In all my time exploring, I have yet to find or see another system with such a makeup. With such joy at finding such a thing, I tried landing on a planet close by and forgot to check it's gravity...landed like a brick dropped from a great height and lost 55% of my hull on the initial impact. Then died in the SRV while prospecting/exploring the surface leaving me with the prospect of no SRV, half a ship and 8000ly from the bubble.

Best bit was limping back to civilization and handing in the data meaning that no matter what, my name would still be up there on one of the most unique systems I have ever found ^^

Mine was a long time ago...back in Beta

The first time I launched my ship, I believe I was on Azeban Orbital in Eranin...can't quite remember but it was one of those early locations where launching from the outpost gives you a wonderful view of the Earth-like planet below. I saw that and was all, this is legit, this is what I've been searching for all these years since first falling in love with TIE Fighter back in 1995.

Nice memory ... actually all posted here are great moments.

I will never forget my first planetary approach and landing after updating to the first Horizons release: the thrill of approaching a planet in orbital cruise with craters, mountains and valleys for the first time, the first glide approach, then the sound of the first landing ! [heart]

I am amazed how quickly I came to take it for granted. I am sure atmospheric planets will give us the same thrill one day, but only for a short while .... such is life !

Taking the same "kill the Pirate Lord" mission with a friend - getting interdicted on the way by an Elite FDL and taking a beating. Meanwhile they had found the pirate lord in an Elite Corvette and were getting smashed to bits. I turned up just long enough to distract the pirate lord whilst my friend's shields regenerated, then just as I was nearly done for my friend blasted the pirate and flew out of the explosion :)

We limped home with both sub 10% hull.

Hard to pick one, but some good ones
First getting to play in alpha and see the scale and detail of the station interiors.

Seeing an imperial capital ship in action for the first time. Watching an Anaconda make an attack run while pursued by fighters and taking heavy fire. Thinking this is what I imagined those long range cruisers doing in Frontier.

Putting my VR headset on and being inside my ship for the first time (this would take it if I had to choose)

CQC - hit the breaks and he flew right by :) Inside a tunnel and getting the kill.

Too many, and certainly some group events, but the single moment that keeps coming back to me as the most epic, immersive and memorable event was right after 2.1 dropped, with mad skillz and modded AI.

Had _just_ bought a conda, in a budget trade loadout. 8M rebuy with 12M in the bank. Flew a trade route and got interdicted on arrival in my destination system by a heavily modded Python. Thought to do the old submit-boost-jump, but not yet entirely familiar in this ship, and <BLAM> with one shot 30% of shields gone. I am being masslocked, too. <BLAM> another 30%+ gone, <BLAM> shields down... hiwaked to first system I could pick....

.... and the NPC followed. Interdicted me again. Learnt my lesson, and immediately hiwaked back to destination system, but by now I was at 14% hull and smoking and sparking.

But made it to port!

The first half hour I just sat there, amazed, and all I could do was switch ships....

Then it got better as I launched :D

Reaching Sagittarius A* in February last year as #30 ever to have done so. An exhilarating sight, before it became a common tourist destination. :)
