While all the treasure hunt excitement has been going on, I've been working on the UP audio image and have made (what appears to be) a few steps forward. I think I've identified the two views at the left and right of the image (within the Merope 5c crater) and how they relate to the circle diagram. The steps beyond that have stubbornly not resulted in me locating anything on the ground, but it looks promising.
I'll write up the details tomorrow, upload images, etc. and post what I've got. Perhaps with a little fresh thinking (and pointing out where I've gone badly wrong
) we can finish figuring it out.

Elite dangerous is a reboot.
A lot of older elite lore and events are part of the new canon but you are ment to take ED as a new start with its own lore and background
This is, imo, a good concern. I'm more concerned about WHAT brings down this, than what is it. It would be fun, if we were all muppet of a malicious group, isn't it ? I remember to have seen an article talking about INRA on GalNet, for instance...

There was furious activity today - final the treasure hunt clue from the first CG then a frantic search in the Pleiades to locate it. Was impressive to watch
Have you read what he said? That is it until 2.2... the search is off but they'll run the remaining CG's to let others go through the process if they want.
While it does look very very cool and I am happy finally things are happening this season has been anti climatic to me.
I'm sort of getting tired of doing a lot of work to find one little thing, where there should be a list of endless things to discover that only goes deeper and deeper into lore and information. Finding needles in a haystack is NOT FUN. This perception of our galaxy is a little too lifeless for my tastes.

Why, in situations like this, is the standard human reaction to "prod it with a stick". Seriously, when was this ever a good idea that turned out brilliant?

Exactly. Everything we've seen up to this point is that these aliens don't seem to be "in control" of their situation. Probes, artifacts, barnacles that are constantly approached and harvested by humans.
I can't piece together the full narrative, but if these aliens were as dangerous and foreboding as we think they should be, I feel like the clues would be a lot more unsettling, and there would be stories by commanders of things watching them from a distance, the idea that we are in fact being hunted or observed.
But instead we find alien stuff in space, alien space on the ground, dead aliens on planets. Nothing that shows we're out of our depths here.
It may be a reboot but it isnt a Thargoid.
The new Elite update is called Guardians.
These things look like creatures, they probably guard Meta Alloys.
I believe Meta Alloys are a secretion from the development stage of these ceatures. They develop underground creating a barnacle on the surface secreting waste materials.
The Meta Alloy is probably a toxin secretion.

An inteligent life form could stage the ability for us to destroy ourselves.
Also if the UAs appeared to be dangeroud to us we wouldnt pick them up, play with them and put them in our homes.

My take on the 'is it Thargoid or not' question depends a lot on some metagaming. Or more like meta-game designing.
In my mind, as far as I understand the design philosophy behind ED and its lore, there's simply no way they'll be using 8 fold rotational symmetry on anything else than the Thargoids. The consistency in design simply doesn't allow for that.
Just like they followed the original ship designs for the iconic snake-ships, they will definitely follow the octagonal design for the Thargoids, which is just as much iconic. Hence, no 8 fold rotational symmetry for other species, ergo this thing is either directly Thargoid, or based on some design someone learned from Thargoids.
I could of course be wrong but in this, I don't think I am.

Unless their ships are made of it, in which case it'll probably be easier to come by than ever and they just wanted to make fixing UA bombed stations a bit easier.
ALthough the top of that ship does look like it has its own form of runic language in cursive.
I think those are some kind of organic wiring, like a nervous system. An alien circuitry.
Also I believe what is at the top is actually the bottom of the ship, it being positioned upside down after the crash.
