Can Someone Tell Me Why I'm Failing this Mission?

I've taken two of these missions now and failed both. I'm supposed to assassinate a scientist.
I get to the system, find the USS but the target never appears.
Five NPCs appear but none are marked as Mission Target: A Python in a wing with two Sidewinders, a Diamondback Scout, and an Asp Explorer.
There are hulks of T-9s and Anacondas floating around.
There is also cargo floating around: UAs, Encrypted Data Storage, and Prototype Tech.
-
If left alone, the NPCs will scoop all of the cargo and then high wake to three different systems.
-
If I attack, the NPC that I attack will high wake immediately. They will not fight. The others will continue to scoop cargo.
-
I've done multiple wake scans and followed them. Can never follow all of them because they high wake to different systems.
-
I have screenshots from the first mission and I took a video during the second one. (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0By8y-lCIKuPpd2V1U3V3SnZaOEU&usp=sharing)

What is the Mission description?

Did the Scientist have a name, as those ships were called "Search and rescue Patrol" so they don't sound like the target at all

Saw the images with the mission description.

Science team Roger Malmstein.

Who wasn't in the Signal source

How did you locate the correct USS? Did you scan the Nav Beacon, and get the light-blue USS target in your contacts panel? Usually that's how you locate stuff for missions.

If you're just randomly picking a USS, it's not the right one.

The Signal Source is Blue
"Mission Target Threat 4"
In the screen shots

Thanks for the replies. Both of the missions named the target as an individual. The mission uss shows up after using the disco scanner and traveling to the named planet or moon.

I'm actually pretty good at the assassination missions normally. This is only the second time I've encountered the "kill scientists" archetype. Has anyone else actually come across this mission type before? If so, were you successful?

I'd put in a bug report at this stage

Sounds like the mission target isn't spawning in the instance, for whatever reason.

Hmmm tricky. Have you tried grabbing some or all of the cargo before they can gather it up?

Can you mass-lock any of the ships to stop them jumping out, so you can damage/destroy them? Personally I'd go for one with a code-number name.

Usually if you miss a Mission Target type USS (objects destroyed, person gets away, etc.) then if you hang about in SC another will appear after a while. Could be worth a try to see if he shows.

Can't mass lock the NPCs because they are high waking. I've tried grabbing the cargo but can't get it all before they scoop some of it. The USSs keep popping up and I keep retrying.

Where canI get these kind of missions (systems/factions/rep requirement), you made me courious and I wanna try it.

I have got them from a system called Nu Tauri. The station is Palaminto terminal or something like that.

Oh my.. Have you seen the chatter in these missions???

lets prove these tin-foil-hat-wearing cranks wrong. This is real science, not their mumbo jumbo.

MUAHAAAAAA, I want to coin the mumbo-jumbo thing as a science term in the lex of canonn!!

Very interesting mission: it needs to be investigated further for sure.
I'm linking your findings in the Canonn thread's front page tomorrow.

Thanks

I don't think it's bugged. Can't be sure but the same exact script ran both times I've had the mission. I must have dropped into this USS at least 20 or more times now.

Thank you. I didn't set out to help with the canonn's research but I'm happy to help if you think the information is worth while.

I wonder what happens if you sit there long enough to hear all the chatter they have?

Nothing much happens. They scoop the cargo an then high wake to three different systems. Pretty sure you can see most of the chatter they have from the screen shots and video I took. I'll be sure to record a passive play through next time I come across the mission.

most likely the SM and ST are support ships, the rescue ships are part of the scenario, and the assassination target is the one not spawning.

thinking about the religious leader assassination missions, they often appear with support, but only the leader is marked as mission target.

I'd fill a bug report, don't think t is a mystery, looks more like a bug.

note: with limpets, 5 UA per signal and 24h of mission time span untill you complete the mission I can foresee the recent buff in meta-alloys fixing station won't be enough.. at all.
