Coolant purge - How does it work?

Hi

So I'm currently out exploring some 2000+ ly out from the human bubble heading for the station with exploration data community goal when I accidentally pressed a key which initiated a Coolant Purge. This has to be pretty new as the key in question never had that function before, but so help me god I can't seem to google it. Every result either talks about silent running or bleeding coolant from various real life motors or PC water cooling kits. What does this do and is there any way I can stop doing it as simply moving around in FTL cruise mode is currently building up heat at an alarming rate.

Honestly they shouldn't re-bind old buttons to functions like this without warning people.

Thank you in advance for any help :)

I'm assuming you aren't talking about the heat sinks.

Silent running essentially disables your shield and closes your heat vents. It is used to minimise your heat signals to lower the chances of being visible on scanners.

Useful in combat to make it difficult to lock onto or even find if you are a small ship, or sneaking past security scans at stations if you are smuggling or wanted.

The down side is, as you say heat will build up pretty fast. If you were to use it for it's intended purpose you would likely disable modules to reduce heat output or fire off heatsinks.

If it's problematic for you I would just bind the key to somewhere where you won't be hitting it accidentally.

Initiating a coolant purge basically takes your ships heat and dumps it into a heat sink block which is then launched to rapidly cool the ship. This is great for controlling heat while fuel scooping, using scbs, silent running or just when being attacked with thermal weapons.

Ah never noticed that text before when using a heat sink. Weird really. The fact that simply flying around in FTL while trying to fire a heat sink causes heat build up must have been a bug. I'll try logging on again to see if my ship has started to bleed heat normally again :)
