NPCs are broken.

So I'm doing a smuggling mission from robigo and despite the multiple attempts I avoid most of the NPCs chasing me. I'm 4 jumps away from my goal and I get interdected by a magic invisible NPC. But what's this? I'm winning the intetdection? Until I'm not. I go from full blue bars to all red in 3 seconds. I fail it. I'm whatever I'll just boost away. Instant thruster malfunction. Shields are gone thrusters are gone. I'm most definitely toast. I'm at 35 hull and my shields and thrusters are back so I boost away hopefully I'll get out of this yet. Nope because this NPC has unlimited rockets.

It's not that big of a deal I had rebuy money but this is very frustrating. Mostly the unlimited rockets.
 
I really have no issues being interdected. It needs some tweaking but whatever. It's the unlimited ammo that gets me. NPCs need to be governed by the same rules as us.        g Sidewinder's don't need to be able to shoot 2 rockets every 1.5 seconds for infinity. I can't even imagine if they were seeker rockets. No one would stand a chance.
 
did you try to install point defences? they are awesome against missiles.

The Asp Ex. has no utility hardpoint coverage over its rear. And when they shoot rockets as fast as they do, even point defence usually can't take out every single one.
 
interdiction from good npc is near impossible to beat, don't even try.

NPCs change their tactics in every update, humans adapt.

recent strategy is:
  • always have another star selected in galaxy map.
  • have mine launchers equipped
  • submit to interdiction to reduce fsd cooldown and not take damage
  • go direct to boost in any direction (flee).
  • as soon as the fsd gets online supercruise away if the attacker does not masslock you
    • hyperjump away if he does
  • during cooldown or for fun harrass the NPC with mines while he chases you.
  • repeat for chain interdiction

till 2.2 you should be good with this, then we will see.
 
I installed mines in the bottom 2 hardpoints. The only time I look back is to turn around after their shields are down and hull is at 30% and finish the job with my multies and pulses. I took down a deadly Cobra and elite Diamondback Scout. Just a few days ago over a planet surface with 1.7 g's. Very satisfying!😎

did the mines drop to planet surface or remain in the flight path?

NPC's are notoriously buggy but that is not the problem here. NEVER fight an interdiction it will only get you killed. Submit, boost, pips to shields and engines, initiate fame shift (preferably High wake) and keep boosting while waving goodbye over your shoulder. If your ship is slow and you can't get distance shock mines might work but personally I have no weapons on my trade/smuggling ships. Jump range & profits > small bounties or dead.

I did have to adjust speed and do some jinking which spread them out a bit which was ok since there were 2 of them in semi close formation . But the mines really didn't seem to fall that fast. Had to keep watching my altitude though, got close a couple of times and had to pull up. Things got really fun when they were chasing me through a canyon. I have to say it was one of the best fights I've had in a long time.
 
NPC's and shield cells are stupid. I have an A rated FDL with a grade 4 engineered huge multicannon and 4 pulse lasers. I opened fire in a compromised nav beacon on a dangerous python from behind and tailed him for about 30-40 seconds until my capacitor ran out of power. I got him down to the final ring of shields and then he started spamming scb's like crazy. Literally 1 every second non stop so his shields were going up when I was unloading about 100-200m away with 4 pips into weapons.

I'm sure its a bug but its really lazy/       ai programming when they don't take heat damage and have unlimited scb's. Had to run away because he eventually turned around there's no point fighting someone I can't damage. Thank god FD didn't also give AI speed hacks.
 
For a second there i thought i was in a ED Forum Time Warp........but nice to be reading NPC related Robigo post again.

Oh how i miss those contentious NPC Robigo post.
 
Npcs come in 2 varieties brain dead and cheating brain dead. The only thing makes elite and deadly AI dangerous is the fact they don't follow the rules. No heat, infinite ammo, ludicrous maneuverability, never miss and so on.

My problem with the current AI is not one of difficulty, it's that it leads to very boring combat. It's not a dog fight since they can out maneuver me, so it's easier just to sit there with 4 pips in shields and 2 in weapons.

Fights go like this against elite and deadly ships. Ram if it's shield cell spamming then sit there and whaling on it till it dies. What fun!
