post-GC 2.4 speculation thread

After browsing and browsing (maybe ineffectively, remove thread if need be), realizing the search feature apparently does not allow numbers, and being entertained at this forum's lack of curiosity... What will 2.4 be?

Obviously things have changed in my mind, with gamescom. I was figuring "2.4 : aliens/thargoids" but now it seems to me that they'll be there a lot sooner. I could be wrong, and maybe we'll just have more and more clues until then... But with this hypothetical gap, what could be the "surprise"?

quick thoughts :
1) Remembering the backlash from the community on horizons release, with people not wanting to buy a DLC without knowing its content and FD's starting lack of communication, I guess they took a risk with the "surprise" and they have to deem it worth the silence (or I'm just really the marketing's perfect victim).
2) It must be big enough or polished enough to prepare the road for season 3. They're also already fleshing out the game with new structures, station interiors... So it can't just be based on random polish in my book.
3) they don't try to tease it by any stretch of imagination. Reading these forums, it's almost like there was no 2.4 planned. What's this mistery

I'm ready and optimistic for anything really - as long as they don't make the center of the galaxy an interactive way to wipe your save by going through it, and starting again with nothing :p

My money is on Alien technology mods or even ships from a friendly race that will make our currently available Engineered mods and Human ships look like 3rd grade Arts and Crafts projects. Aside from passenger missions--just in time for being able to assist in mass refugee transport missions to evacuate civilian population to safety from stations and planetary outposts under siege by Alien invaders--it would be the next logical progression opportunity for those who already "Maxed Out" existing ones including Engineers.

Alien FSD technology--that research is already under way--should open up the rest of the Galaxy as well as potentially intergalactic exploration opportunities for us that would make current long-haul missions pale by comparison.

True military role-play; such as the option to enlist into the Federal and Imperial Navy as opposed to their Auxiliary corps would also be awesome to allow us to participate in battles, patrols, rescue, reconnaissance missions just to name a few.

Earth-like planet landings--or planets with atmosphere--will also have nearly unlimited potential for the game.

Ground or Atmospheric combat and other similar missions with expanded variety of vehicles including the ability to submerge underwater on applicable planetary environments would also be really cool to add hidden submerged deep-sea outposts and mining facilities to further increase the variety of locations in the game.

Obviously some of these would not be realized in the 3.0 timeframe, however, some of the work to establish the foundation to build on later should be doable.

You could be right about some things. Even though I would be disappointed by a new wave of mods - ships I'd like, but engineers was enough. Or completely different mods serving other gameplay mechanics than just fighting.

I would like a more believable and purposeful miltary career, yes, but that can't be a mother feature can it? Or maybe "2.4 : resistance" :p
Yeah I also believe passenger missions could get more interesting that the gamescom videos appeared to be, if they're correctly involved in the BGS and the probable war to come.

For atmospheric, I would wait a bit personnally. I might be the minority, but I wwould not want them before season 4 or 5( if there's one). Time for them to really work on the tech, learn from others, and make real variations in terrain, biomes, and gameplay around them. We may never see earth like worlds, or really simplified ones : have you noticed the lights on the dark side of earth like worlds? they're basically corruscant, filled with cities. I think the game can't handle that at the moment. Nor gameplay-wise.

It would be amazing if 3.0 was space legs, but I really really really doubt that. That seems a LONG way away.

pretty much. Or it really depends on what they want to make of it. If it's space hub / station drinks / ship visit, that might do it for season 3. If it's what they originally planned (fighting, boarding, stations) that might take longer. But who knows. They actually surprised me with the quality of horizons and SRVS when I was the least expecting to see planets. They could have a trump card (haha I can't use that word now...)

I think this way too, and I know it won't be too popular around here.

I have two reasons. First is that it's really hard work. Not the actual legs and walking part. It's ezpz. Really, I haven't got the slightest doubt that FD can implement a working FPS camera fixed to an animated model's head and make it move inside ED properly. Probably need a month to fine tune. What's hard work is the gameplay it will add to the game. That, plus the environments. Functional station interiors is a must (or they can launch walking out of the SRV first and add station interiors later).

And the second reason is, they want to hold onto that until Star Citizen is around the corner. Sad but I really see it that way. I think even if they have a fully working space legs update with everything in place, they'll wait either until after SC goes for a public release or right before that.

What I believe they will do with 3.0 is planets with basic atmosphere types, which have only one type of weather, and planets with simpler life, such as just bacterial and plant life with 'hostile atmospheres'. Why hostile? To justify the need to interact with them from the safety of an SRV, because walking will not be there.

That being said, I really want to have legs too so let's secretly hope for that.

That being said

I was thinking earlier about why FD was putting so much effort into differentiating people from cargo. I think that "tourism" is a good excuse and could be some nice gameplay but for me, what this really means is :

Elite : Dangerous 2.4 : Invasion

I know we'll get the first wave in 2.2 but I'm pretty sure we'll get community goals where we need to ferry refugees from the bubble to Jacques's Bubble BSG style !

It's the only way for me to understand why they turned 5 days of streams into passenger lounge demonstation.

Yes, sounds convincing enough. But that sounds a bit like "Horizons V2.0" though. after landing on planets, land on... more planets? That does not look very selling. I'd like it, with loads of new gameplay added to it as you described - strip this part, and I don't need colored skies that much, really.

You might be onto something, yes. I've seen michael brooke's post in a thread - don't remember which one - when someone said "I'll park my ships in empire capital ; Frontier is not going to destroy it, are they!!!" and he just replied :

" :)

Michael".

Haha

Probably going to be new missions on planets.
I remember David Braben getting really excited talking about how great it would be if you could go on a planet and go hunting the wildlife.
Will be really badly implemented as we have come to expect from FDEV.
You will take a mission where you have to goto a planet and kill 15 boolysmickles.

Personally i think if they wait until SC is released they will have missed the boat.
They need to implement it before SC is out, get as much cash of people as possible.
Once SC is out people will go to that (except the fanbois of course) it will be much better done in my opinion, already the beta is breathtaking.
ED will become a silly sandbox and the real "game" will be SC.

I believe in both games. Still Elite is out and 2.4 is planned. They have not got all right for sure - the biggest mistake to me was cqc. I can't find a match now. This was badly aimed and a real misfire. But it will always add to the game in some way - the gaps are being filled, as slow as it may be.

about all that Elite is missing really (major feature wise) is Mutliplayer, Space-legs and Atmospheric landings. Space-legs mostly for walking around your ship or hanging out with your friends at a station, I can't see the need to turn it into Space-COD whenever you jump out of your ship.

I think space-legs will come before atmospheric landings though. I can't imagine the processing and programming required to render fully algorithmic vegetation, water, animals. That's a long-term project for FD and I doubt that would come much before season 4.
