So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

Agreed :) And I wasn't slamming it either ... :D

I do think though that we should be drawing 'themes' from these mythologies only, rather than trying to lay them directly on top of this unfolding story. No doubt inspiration has been drawn from a variety of sources, and woven together. Understanding the themes may give us a clue as to the motivations of the central characters. Or simply just give us a headache :D

Ahhh, that's where we differ.
I don't believe we're intended to be passive in this - the mythologies are our clue to a course of action, which we've so far singularly failed to decipher, but nonetheless is integral to solving the mystery, not just to understanding it.

I'm taking the rep as a reminder that finding the IT is not just a question of scanning every system in EAFOTS until something weird shows up.

Drew is passing me over on reps so that is a very obvious flag that what I'm seeing is a bug, something else unrelated to the Rift mystery, or a bug. I'm going with bug.

Nuts! I wish things like that would be in the game, rather than people finding out about places - like Jacques - by simply looking at the galaxy map and going "hey! this ties into the game's economics although it is far from where everything is at!"

Hopefully what I'm posting at least gives them ideas for future endeavors so that some strange visual anomalies or what-not hint towards whatever story-line they are creating. Clearly the game engine is capable of things like that, if only through bugs. :)

e: I know some of the UA stuff has been through decoding audio - but some energy based stuff causing strange system reboots or corruption, which somewhat has happened with UAs I think - at least in literature, but taking it further like random flight behavior since everything has to be fly-by-wire so energy interference would be easy to short out or cause thrusters to go full tilt, systems randomly glitching, HUD crashing or showing garbled data, etc. Lots of cool stuff to make it interesting could be had, I hope Fdev pursues that.

So back to what we can actually find out - what could we really find out here that would have been present since Gamma? If it is some astronomically visible indication we have to assume that the lore treats the Galaxy as a static with nothing changing in the slightest over a decade, a century, or longer - right?

Yeah, what you're seeing would be a great way to indicate that there was something weird going on. It would be great if it got worse and worse as you got closer to whatever the source was.

Although I think I am actually just experiencing a bug right now, I am still pushing to see if I can find something out here. I've been hesitant to post my full location, just because of individuals that enjoy going out of their way to screw up other people's days, but I'll toss up this shot I took in the past few days to show where I'm at in general. I'm on the R-R line pretty much, but not close to EAFOTS or the other stuff... basically almost in the Formidine Rift void, assuming it's this location and not a much smaller bit of where it has been mapped. Showing from the perspective of H&S with all of the locations I've visited being that blob of bookmarks for the most part. The further ones out like EAFORDS, SYROIFOE, EAFOSYS, and RHO Cassi and that one lonely bookmark just off the edge to the left I haven't managed to get to. Pretty sure I've hit that Poseidal wall. I thought I had a top-down, I'll get one and post that in a bit.

I'm going to spend some time putting together what I have of the anomalous star systems now, stop trying to troubleshoot since I've passed on all I can to QA, and see if anything goes a certain direction.

e: Top down view, just in some part of the Rift area. Not anything special. But, who knows... seems the whole thing is generally unremarkable so remain vigilant!

I presume they are referring to Salome ... and she is under house arrest somewhere.

Interesting quote from President Lincoln there. Not clear how this all ties in right now though ;)

Lincoln didn't originate that and was probably quoting Mark 3:15 himself
Sulu set course for EAOFTS Mark 3:15!

Just saying I think Lincoln's the wrong stop,,,

Could be Drew tryin to grab us by ears, point our head in the right direction, "look it's right in front of you, can't you see it"

Mark didn't originate it either I'm sure I've seen it in Roman Senate speeches, probably goes back to the Greeks and I'd bet is political boilerplate in every culture that's ever had politics. variant "I'm a uniter, not a divider", "I'll be the Grubbleflix for all Fluxturians"

So let's ignore all that and analyze Lincoln.

It's a cultural meme difference

British: genesis > crucifixion > 1066 Battle of Hastings, history starts tic toc tic toc
American: genesis > crucifixion > 1776 American Revolution, history starts tic toc tic toc

For the British Stonehenge & Woodhenge came before the crucifixion, and I think Boudicca might be more appropriate than 1066. :D

I prefer to start with the flooding of The north sea... Doggerland or something like that.... Crucifixion had very little real influence. Boudicca had less influence than William I though.... :D :D

In the 'real' world, there's plenty of theories about 'first contact' having happened to multiple ancient civilizations, resulting in a common theme of winged superior beings (angels/nephilim) being found all over the world.

Which is how I first learned about critical thinking, having read my fathers V.Daniken books aged 9. I was fascinated, then went back to school after summer, looked stuff up and found the books to be a massive fraud.

Factor in the Nazca Lines in Peru and what you're suggesting really isn't unreasonable.

Those were one of VD's lies. He edited parts out of some of the glyphs, so they better resembled what he wanted them to, and most people fail to mention that there are hills overlooking the site, and so the designers could see exactly what they carved.

Ah of course. I had a hunch the quote came from the bible. Not the first time quotes from the bible have been used in relation to all this either ... Remember Salomés speech at Beagle point?

EDIT: After re-reading, I think I misremembered the speech above, wasn't there one where Salomé spoke of sheep among wolves?

DOUBLE-EDIT: Found it: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...rt-2/page244?p=3849534&viewfull=1#post3849534

"I am sending you out like sheep amongst wolves." (Matthew 10:16)

I do wonder if the irony is not lost on Salomé, considering the bible passage concerning the biblical Salome is only a couple of chapters later in Matthew 14:6. For which I suppose she named her ship 'Seven Veils', knowing about the reference to the dance in the passage.

Salome of the bible wanted John the Baptists head on a plate. I presume Salomé of the Elite Dangerous universe feels just the same about Denton Patreus.

I don't think we're that far apart in our thinking :)

Drew has previously stated that there is a reason why her ship is called 'seven veils' (here)... I tried to cover off a few of the possibilities we came up with before in the OP. Although by no means do I think we've exhausted the possibilities!

I suppose I feel like we've been playing these guessing games for a while now, with so many of these avenues explored previously. Like I said, I'm still watching and waiting ... for that new nugget of information that helps the pieces start falling into place.

Right now I feel I have a jigsaw that's missing all the blue bits!

So you seem to be a lot more in the know-how about this whole thing.

I'm thinking about heading to Myoidee dz-S d3-0, traveling through the brown dwarf (the "dark systems" belt under EAFOTS all the way to that region, has that trip already been made?

I don't think I know that much more ... I've just been following this long enough to have a head full of info :D

In terms of the brown dwarf 'belt' ... this was covered off previously by Aerovoid here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ift-(Part-3)?p=3930265&viewfull=1#post3930265

Actually it is Mark 3:25 not 3:15. You're in the wrong system ;)

The following is likely a dead end so I'll wrap it in a SPOILER.

This isn't the first time that we've seen a passage from the Bible quoted in relationship to Salome. Lets look a little bit closer at this one.

In the Galnet story ... to whom does the "house divided against itself" refer to? The house of Loren? The house of Duval? Or perhaps the Empire itself?

The context of Mark 3:25 is that the "house" is a reference to Satan. In verse 22 there were some scribes who claimed that Jesus was casting out demons "by the prince of demons". Jesus' answer to this accusation was, "How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end."

The same phrase appears in the book of Matthew as well, recounting the same set of events. Matthew 12:25 - "But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: 'Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.'"

It is also in Luke 11:17 - "But He knew their thoughts and said to them, 'Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against itself falls.'"

Of the four canonical Gospels the phrase appears in Matthew, Mark and Luke. Only the Gospel of John omits it. So, we have three numbers: 12:25, 3:25 and 11:17. Coordinates?

The actual quote used in Galnet, however, is much closer to how Lincoln said it. I can't find the specific wording in any of the mainstream English Bible translations but it is almost exactly the same words used by Lincoln. Given the context of how the phrase is used it makes more sense. I doubt that the Imperial Patron quoted in the article intended to paint the Empire as Satan just as Lincoln wasn't comparing The USA to Satan. My bet is that there was no intention to send us scrambling through the Bible but I could be wrong.

For the sake of argument lets go a little further into this Sunday School lesson. In one of Drew's Oolite novels there was a huge clue that referenced a Bible passage. The Thargoids kept repeating the phrase ‘VULGATE! DUO, QUINDECIM, NOVEM!’

The Vulgate is a particular Latin translation of the Old and New testaments. Duo, of couse, is the number 2, Quindecim is 15 and Novem is 9. The characters ascertain that this number refers to the Book 2 of the Bible (Exodus) Chapter 15, verse 9: "The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them." Not exactly something you want to hear from a Thargoid.

It is not without merit to assume that Drew might be pointing us to the Bible as a clue. If (BIG IF) that is the case then it is very likely those three verse numbers (12:25, 3:25, 11:17).

EDIT: As an aside the context of Mark 3:15 is Jesus being accused of being in league with the Devil after casting a demon out of someone who is possessed. Could Salome be 'possessed'? Octavia?

Anubis came up empty, just a K & M pair with no bodies (well, apart from the half dozen occupied escape pods right next to the main star). However I'm looking at Gilgamesh now, my apologies if this system has already been scrutinised. The first star has 7 bodies, the last of which is Ammonia-rich. The second star's last planet (8 bodies), is 100% Ammonia atmosphere, dunno if this is a thing.

("He who Saw the Deep", in modern terms: "He who Sees the Unknown")
"In the second half of the epic, distress about Enkidu's death causes Gilgamesh to undertake a long and perilous journey to discover the secret of eternal life"

The end part of the quote from the Imperial Patron states "History teaches us that much" ... so I presume they are referring to when that expression had been used previously in human history, and in this case is directly referring to the growing Imperial in-fight.

I tend to agree. Contextually Lincoln's use of the phrase and how it is used in the Galnet article are a good fit as they both appear to be references to civic institutions.

Now we just need to know if the person under house arrest is Salome ... or someone else. If Someone else then it might be that other person behind both the attempt on Patreus' life and Salome's abduction.

The bit that points me to Salomé (Kahina) is the line "no stranger to controversy" ... which smacks of Kahina's Sol tour before disappearing. Though it could also be applied to any number of senior Imperials.

Yes, of course but wouldn't it be very clever to make oblique references to Kahina only to pull the rug out under us? You're right of course in that it makes most sense that the article is talking about Senator Loren but it would be an interesting twist for it to be someone else.
