Newcomer / Intro Long time Xbox player, I have a question about the PC version

I've been playing Elite on the Xb1 since December but I'm about to build my first real gaming PC and I have some questions.

I'm building this PC with VR in mind, likely going with the Oculus.

- I see the game available from the Frontier website, Steam, and the Oculus website. Does it matter where I buy the game from?

- If so, do I have to get the game from the Oculus store in order to play it with the Rift?

- I prefer Steam, can I get the game from there and still get the same experience on the Rift?

I'm not giving up my Xbox One career, not when I'm almost Explorer Elite with +800Mcr in assets and no apparent way of transferring progress (such a bummer). So I'll likely have two profiles, one on each platform.

Thanks for the help!

Out of interest have you asked FD if they would consider duplicating your progress across to the PC variant?

...Edit...and obviously deleting your Xbone one when confirmed and tested

I havent done it personally, but someone makes a thread in the Xbox section about once every couple weeks and from what I understand, no they cannot at this time. I'm not upset that it can't happen, I kinda like being on the Xbox One, I have established friends over there. It's just a bummer, that's all.

It doesn't matter where you buy the game from. You can still use a Rift with the game regardless (even via Steam). Currently the Rift has better resolution than the Vive, and fewer general issues (I believe). I'm a Rift user myself. I built a PC to run the game on a 4K monitor, and it was beautiful. Then I bought a Rift...
The resolution may be lower, but I've never played outside VR since that first experience. Until you've sat in the cockpit and experienced the full 3D holographic HUD display overlayed over a real 3D cockpit you can't understand the difference it makes.

Even after the beauty of a 38 inch 4K monitor, that was simply playing ED (although with crystal clarity), in a Rift you are IN ED :D

I have a copy on Steam and my original FD direct copy.

Both work with the Oculus - you just set the "run things not from the Rift store" setting in the Oculus util.

As someone who plays via Oculus Rift, I bought via the Rift store, but it launches the stand alone client ANYWAY. Best recommendation is to buy from whoever is cheaper at the time. Interestingly, once you make your account you can also download the regular [non VR] version of the game if you buy via the Rift store. I SUSPECT buying through steam is similar? [can anyone confirm?]

Also, if you haven't seen Elite in VR yet. . . be prepared to never go back to a standard monitor again.

EVER.

There's JUST no comparison. The first time you step into the cockpit of even the stock sidewinder . . and you look up and see that "sunroof", and you turn to the right and see the flight training manual. . . .

And every cockpit just gets better. . . and BETTER. . . [with the possible exception of the federal dropship. . . does it REALLY need 2 coffee makers?!     >.> [I have no idea what they're SUPPOSED to be. . they look like Coffee makers to me :p ]

FYI I have heard of Frontier Support transferring progress on a one time only thing if you have a decent reason and own the game on both PC and Xbox. This will obviously reset your other account so you don't "win" anything but say your xbox/pc blew up and you wanted to play on the other platform as you couldn't replace said broken platform I believe they'd support a 1 time switch clearing and copying.

As for the whole where do I buy it from. Afaik its' the same game, just depends on who takes the profit. Personally I'd use the Frontier store and then request a steam key. Best of both worlds giving money to the devs and getting it on steam anyway.

Thanks, I'll think about asking for a transfer but I might just say screw it and just start over on PC. I kinda like that I have a couple people to chat with on XBL.

And I'll definitely get the game from Frontier's website instead and just ask for a Steam key. Who do I ask for that?

Yeah, basically the question is are you happier starting as a new account on PC or Xbox. Personally I'd enjoy the wonderment of advancing through on Occulus fresh and keep the xbox acc with ships, friends etc for when you want to blow off steam but thats my preference :p

Thread right here on steam keys, don't fully know how it works myself as I just use the launcher but that should help.

Do you need a mo itor sitting on the side for *whatever* when using a rift? Or can you run the whole PC with a HMD alone?

Z...

^^^ that is a good question, I am wondering that myself.

Just did that, bought it from the Frontier store directly and it gives you the Steam keys and the Oculus Store key as well. Super stoked to get my Oculus now. Thanks a lot for the help everyone! Gaming PC built, now time for some Elite!

Oculus is a supplement, not a replacement for a monitor. There are apps such as big screen or virtual desktop that allow you to project your desktop environment in Oculus, but you still need an external monitor.

Plus, if you need to look up something on Roguey, or what have you.....
