I saw somewhere recently that players of Elite rank will be able to bestow the title Dangerous temporarily onto another player showing that the Elite player believes they warrant the title. I believe the title of the game is somehow tied into that suggesting the game is not just single player anymore but a more complex multiplayer experience.
The only thing I don't like so far is the name.

It's called Dangerous because when you reach Dangerous rank you can be contracted by Elite membership to take on Elite-level missions. Something like that - I read it somewhere on the main site. It's a lore thing. Basically, the Elite are so Elite that they can't be bothered and so they subcontract their work.
But... Elite was NEVER easy to play...
I remember a million years ago "it feels like that" we had to sent them a postcard with a code on it to see who was ELITE first ..

Very true - however these days a lot of people want everything on a plate and cannot comprehend actually having to learn new skills.
There's people working in McDonalds now demanding $15 per hour - just laughable.

I don't fully understand the name myself - it would be nice to have a full explanation of how it came to be.

There's also lots of peeps who would like it to be "Mediocre: Easy to Play"
I think of it like this: the game is called 'Elite' and 'Dangerous' is just the first of many installments. Perhaps the next one will be called Elite: Revenge of the Thargoids
Isn't the logic that Dangerous was originally the fourth rank and with this being the fourth Elite game it followed?
In any case I'm still inclined to call it Elite IV cause that's the game I've been waiting 20 years for!
