Newcomer / Intro What does "Season Pass" mean?

I'm planning on buying Horizons, but I note that it says "Horizons Season Pass" What does this mean? Am I buying access to the Horizons package just for a "season" and if so how long is that? And when dies it start/finish?

So you're basically buying a year's worth of development, or more than a year the way FD are going about releases.

If you look at the Horizons season pass page, it will detail the five "updates" or "expansions" you get by buying the season pass. The Horizons season pass will buy you 5 releases, from 2.0: Planetary landings to the "surprise" one.

Your season pass will run out when FD finish the Horizons season and release all five updates. We've had two of the releases so far and are waiting on the next.

For the record, people out there are paying £30 for a CoD DLC that features a couple of new maps. You're paying £20 for five releases running over the course of over a year. That's good value if it didn't smack you in the face.

Just to avoid misunderstandings - "season pass runs out" does not mean you cannot play the Horizons expansion anymore.

It just means that, for all updates and expansions after the Horizons season, you will have to buy another season pass.
If you don't buy a new one, you can still keep playing Horizons, but not the new features and expansions that the next season will bring.

To clarify the two above imagine it like Fifa or COD where there's a new game near enough 1 per year (or thereabouts) but instead of it being new it's expansions on the old one and you pay per year of updates and content.

^It's not exactly a year, could be 14-16 months. The updates this year have been so big timescales have had to be pushed back a touch as we are only looking at 2.2 in October so there's a good chance 2.3 and 2.4 won't be ready by December for the 12 month bit..

In any case open Horizons on the store page to see whats in game in 2.0 and 2.1 updates, as well as headlines of whats coming in 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 updates. Patch notes section of the forum will show just how much more than the headline features tend to be put into the updates too. :D

And welcome to planet landings, try a sidewinder first and watch the gravity :p

And do not forget that for playing Horizons (season 2) you must have also the season 1 (the basic game). It is best to buy the "Deluxe" version that includes the two seasons

But it is constantly available

Frontier don't seem to understand what a season pass is. Ignore the word pass. It does not apply to Elite. A Season in Elite is just a years worth of updates. Season 2 is split into 5 meaningful updates:

2.0 Planetary landings
2.1 Engineers
2.2 Ship Launched Fighters
2.3 Multi-Crew
2.4 Mystery

You pay once and get all these updates. You cannot but them separately which is why I object to them calling it a season "pass". (to me pass implies I'm getting a deal on a bundle of separate purchases) These updates also include a lot of tweaks and additions to the base game. Each season targeted to take about a year. Season 2 is going to take a little longer. Which just means you are getting more for your money. Now you are getting over a years worth of content when you are only paying for just a year. Hooray.
