Wing mining and NPC spawns

This is a bit long-winded, please forgive my verbosity. [blah]

Been doing a few mining missions and have noticed that whenever a new wing member drops into the instance one or more NPCs (almost always wanted) spawn. At first I thought this was either random, or tied to the player dropping into the instance but having done quite a few mining missions recently with a few different players and noticed that the pattern formed was neither random nor down to the player joining the instance.

Here are a few examples of what I mean.

Master player joins mostly harmless and deadly players - 2 ships spawn - competent asp scout and elite vulture.
Deadly player joins Master and Expert players. 2 ships spawn - dangerous AspX and expert clipper.
Master player joins mostly harmless player - 1 ship spawns - mostly harmless cobra.
Dangerous player joins mostly harmless, deadly and master players - 3 ships spawn - competent eagle, elite python and dangerous FAS.
Master player joins expert player - 1 ship spawns - expert AspX

To me it looks like the NPCs that spawn are linked to the players already in the ring, not the new arrival.

I've also observed that each time a player joins an existing instance a new npc will spawn for each ship already there, even if other NPCs are already about. This means that when the first new player drops to the instance, 1 new NPC will spawn, when a second new player joins 2 more will spawn (making a total of 3 if the first NPC was not dealt with) if a third new player joins, 3 new NPCs spawn (making 6 spawned NPCs in total)

To me, this would suggest that if you are wanting to go wing mining, the best idea would be to let the lowest combat ranks drop in first and then the others drop in order of increasing rank. It would also be a good move to escape from or deal with the NPCs in the instance before the next player drops in (unless you like fighting against lots of NPCs at once)

This could be used to annoy miners. If you knew where there were CMDRs mining in a ring, you could jump in and out of their instance and keep spawning more NPCs. So you could easily disrupt their mining effort at no risk to yourself.

Another annoying side-effect is that whenever a wing member jumps out of the instance, any active collector limpets (being used by the remaining wing members) expire. Has this been bug reported?

EDIT: Nvm, submitted bug report

The AI in this game hahaha. Why is an npc spawn when you drop on a ring if in supercruise your were alone? hahaha, nonsense.

They have scanner tools that we don't have? That would be cool, a probe to scan distant sites on a system to locate ships.

I haven't tested this. But doesn't a CMDR in a ring generate a USS?

It provides a weak excuse for the NPC spawns, but when there were none in supercruise to start with it becomes a bit silly.

It's a known bug and they have been working on it. Limpets also explode if a player logs out, even if docked at a station. Recent teabagging at Lave was hampered somewhat by players high-waking out or logging off when they docked. One of more irritating aspects of this bug is that any cargo being held by the collector limpet is destroyed when it explodes.

IIRC, they leave a low wake marker for a short period of time but don't generate a signal source just by being there. When it comes to meeting up in rings, excluding RES sites, I've never been able to join an instance without a wing beacon being active and targeted.

I don't particularly like the increased NPC spawns inside the rings. I just fail to see why any pirate would enter the rings and attack mining ships as they arrive and before they can start mining rather than lurk about outside the rings and interdict them when they leave.
