Mining tips?

I've been mining a RES site in a pristine metallic ring. I found the percentages normally higher in the RES sites. No matter where i drop in, there is almost always a pirate wanting to know what i have in my hold. Don't carry anything other than limpets going in. Let them scan you and move on to greener pastures. When that's done, boost several times till no one else is around. Then it's just you and the rocks. I usually target the planet and mine towards it. This will keep you from tracking back through the areas you've already mined.

What ship do you plan on using?

A grade prospector for maximum fragment yield, for a medium mining laser you'll want at least 3 - 4 active limpets to keep up, watch your materials stock if it fills up the collectors will stall, the collector controller needs at least 1 km range anything below that and a small ship movement can take you outside the collector controller range.

The Asp X and Fed Dropship make decent miners although both could do with more internal slots, for casual mining the Cobra 4 is pretty useful, if you've got the credits the Python a serious mining ship that's capable of cargo hauling and light BH.

If you can't afford the slots/a ship with a single slot that lets you fit 3-4 limpets, poisitioning while mining is king. Fragments fly off perpendicular to the rock, so if you're shooting a surface facing directly at you, the fragments come off towards you. This creates a big, sweeping loop that the limpets need to take to return the fragments and increases the time it takes to scoop by a lot.

Instead, fire at a surface facing so the fragments come off roughly below your cargo hatch. That way it's a straight line between the fragments and your cargo hold, and the limpets just go back and forth. For me it's the difference between scooping half the fragments and the rest decaying, versus scooping all of them with just two limpets.

Lining up with the fragment stream is definitely a time saver. But it needs a roid that is either stationary, spinning predictably about a single axis, or roughly spherical. Unfortunately, wildly tumbling roids are far more common now - especially in ice rings.

I'm flying a t7 fully a rated. Was thinking about upgrading to a python at some point.

This. Don't underestimate prospector limpets. I know I did. How foolish of me. Much less flying around, a lot easier to choose your minerals, and easier time positionning yourself. Prospectors are a time saver - if you had to choose between 6 collectors or 3 collectors/2 prospectors, go for the latter no doubt.

1) Never ever mine in a RES! Even if you get a little more out of it (which is questionable), the constant harassment from NPCs is not worth it. You can drop into any part of the ring and you won't take damage if your speed is under 1000 km/s.

2) Always use prospector limpets to check rocks. Always carry as many collector limpet controllers as you can. The more collector limpets you have out at a time, the faster it'll go. Remember that time is money.

As others said, prospector limpets are great for being choosy about the rocks you mine. Also, drop into a portion of the ring that ensures you have plenty of daylight left....night mining is awful!

Finally, pick rocks that don't rotate or rotate very slowly. Your collector limpets are very autistic and will kill themselves collecting fragments from rotating rocks.

If you have enough internal space, 2 class 5 collector limpet controllers are better than 1 class 7.

Fill 60-75 percent of your cargo hold with limpets when you set out. They die easily, and some will be used as one-shot prospectors.

Wherever you drop into a ring, it will spawn pirates. Let them scan you or just chain boost away until they disappear from sensors. You will then be free to mine in peace.

This isn't guaranteed.
If you have any missions and/or engineer cargo, or a NPC was tailing you in supercruise before you drop into the ring, sometines the NPC will follow you long past the time you would think they would give up. The normal spawn of pirates (you always get every time you drop anywhere in a ring)will give up once they are off the scanner.
