Will we have an android as npc crewmember?

As title, will we see some sort of droids or androids as npc crewmember? I like the idea to have some drones or droids in my ship as minions during remote expeditions.

Ooooh

edit: oh actualy in ED lore, AI is outlawed right?

(which maybe explains the docking computer)

I - Ahem ... have a friend (thats right) that would prefer a Gynoid. That said, I hope robots with variable degree of artificial intelligence contribute to make the galaxy interesting.

I do remember reading somewhere that AI is outlawed in the Elite series, though I don't remember why, though it seems to be a popular thing to do (Dune, WH40k, and the X series feature similar bans). It does explain the docking computer...

Though, considering how poorly the governments of Elite enforce their other laws, how do they manage to enforce the AI ban?

I misread the title title as astroid NPC for a crew member. My brain threw up a brief, confusing image of a big rock sat in the copilot seat.

It really es me off how AI is banned in the Elite lore

It's not like advanced AI ever hurt anyone.

Except for Cylons.
And Skynet.
And the Borg.
And Aliens androids.
And Blade Runner replicants.
And Ex Machina androids.
And Hal 9000.
And every other sci fi setting where robot AI goes bad and tries to kill humanity.

Oh wait nevermind. Maybe outlawing advanced AI is a good idea after all.

Probably by ruthlessly destroying any advanced AI systems that are found and dismantling any corporations that try to develop advanced AI. There are probably a few independent labs that still create them but they are probably rudimentary and very secretive due to the need to stay underground.

there was a game back in the day on the speccy called psi5 trading company.....you had to carefully select a crew from androids and aliens and robot types...great stuff.

There are still AI in the Elite universe, however if it will be in the ED universe we don't know as FD has said that they will change the lore a bit in ED.

"A collection of highly illegal AI remnants. These items are of extreme interest to various shady organisations and remote cults. Their almost mythical status has led to a huge amount of counterfeiting, further inflating the value of items with a clear and proven history. It is uncertain whether any of these pieces actually retain the AI personality that was originally present within."

Robots were discussed in the DDF weren't they

With the Ban on AI one assumed they would be some level below that, I mean a repair droid or such doesn't need to have a General AI personality, just know what it does, no more AI than the voice packs are, programs responses.

On the flip side, with some cost/risk/illegality, plug in one of those AI relics....

I'd like Bender Bending Rodriguez as my co-pilot please. Although he'd probably demand less space trading and more thievery, blackjack and hookers.
