To all Beta Backers

All you Beta backers creating new threads within the Beta Forum and praising/complaining about the current build, [redacted] has all been discussed in depth within the various forums and the DDF.

I understand that this is all new to you beta backers but why post new threads without doing a search to see how much it’s been discussed already.

I ask this as when one of you makes a post it’s lost to page 15 before the day is finished.
Please do a search and resurrect a old thread before starting a new one as it’s currently chaos in the beta forums, even the Alpha forums were never this bad.

Speaking for myself, I didn't know this project existed 8 months ago. Where was I 8 months ago? I was playing "World of Tanks". :)

For sure, it's a great idea to recommend that people devour the information available in the DDF area. But please remember one thing - Beta Backers did not have permission to access one of the forum areas you mentioned. I'm guessing many things were discussed to death on the Alpha forum.

this kind of elitist (no pun intended) "I was here first" mentality is found in every forum, pay it no mind.

What some alpha backers (and I stress "some", not "most") do not realize is that there are farrrrr more beta backers so this kind of thing is inevitable.... and it will be the same when the game opens up to standard beta and then gamma and then the real thing. It's just a fact of internet life.

DDF topics are available to everyone to view, if beta backers took the time to just scan the available topics within the DDF they will find a wealth of knowledge plus answers to their questions, plus doing a bog standard search will cut down on the repeated threads that are currently being created. Currently the beta forum is a shambles with only the new questions that haven't been answered already surviving 24hrs before being lost to page15.

Kinda of an elitist attitude. When hasn't a fresh influx of players ever not blast the forums with duplicate threads, or even worse necro some serious out of date information that causes even more confusion. Just because folks joined at a different price point doesn't make them better or worse. Many things were put behind backers logins, but luckily many decent streamers presented enough to get folks really interested. Enjoy the vastly different insurance rates, that's ridiculous. The game is Elite:Dangerous not Elite:Snobbery :)

I would have loved to know about it during the kickstarter days and would have backed it then if I had known at the alpha level, but post kickstarter just seemed better to wait. Being an original Elite player, I had the funds to.

Let the beta testers comment on the beta version. Having paid more for the game does not give you or anyone else more right than anyone else to give your opinion.

I think part of what Mobius is trying to say is that some threads are asking for significant design changes. It's a bit late in the day to change things like the flight model etc.

Ah. No, I didn't get that. Fair comment.

Still, I'm happy to see current players with their brains and imagination engaged, saying "what if?". Nothing would be more depressing than a stony silence!

this is what happens when

a) the wider playing population doesn't have access to any thread or discussion that may have already taken place in the Alpha forums. And for who most of the new threads is old hat, or has been discussed previously

b) you have an influx of 10,000 plus new players, who (may have) previously perused the forums and now want to give their own feedback.

c) have a large influx of new players that haven't been following Elite Dangerous, but have now 'discovered' the game as the PR ramps up through media and word of mouth.

I personally haven't been on the forums much in the last 3-4 days. and yes, I have seen the large amount of threads that have been created in the Beta section.

I'm to busy playing the game, finding bugs.........

1 disappearing space stations
2 hyperspace that doesn't finish
3 glitching graphic overlays that double up certain instrument panels
4 ships that disappear when they get to 0% instead of blowing up
5 space stations that 'jump' slightly, changing the position of the entrance of landing pad
6 power settings that 'reset' to neutral whenever you enter a jump
7 cracked canopy overlay that inhibits you 'seeing' through it
8 commodity market interface that glitches when navigating down to the bottom to exit.
9 landing gear message not appearing.

etc etc.

I'm sure these are all 'known'. and no I haven't 'created' a thread for each one. :p

where were you when it really mattered 8 months ago.

I was bitter and angry at the game. I really, really wanted to be part of the alpha, but there was no way I could afford that kind of money.

I did come to the forum from time to time, but you forget that we can't even read the alpha forum, not even now. The DDF section provides only partial information; it's only the tip of the iceberg, which makes reading it all the more frustrating. When I started to learn everything I could about the game a month ago, most of the time I ended up to a link I couldn't access.

I understand the frustration over the massive influx of duplicated topic, but you could also understand the frustration of the less privileged part of the fragmented player base.

Mobius, relax.

We had the same in the Alpha forum with thread after thread being created about repeated topics. It may seem worse in the Beta forum because there are way more people in Beta than there were in Alpha.

I saw the same thing when Godus went from Alpha to Beta, and I was one of the Beta players.

You're not doing yourself, or the former Alpha players, like me, any favours with threads like this (and yes, I too have had my fair share of "this thread is pointless" replies).

What you're posting about now happening with Beta forum will happen again with Standard Beta and with Gamma and with full release, and each stage will be worse than before.

The best thing for you, and any former Alpha player, to do, is be nice and politely and helpfully answer questions and link to threads that will help. And do this just as nicely regardless of whether you've seen this asked once or a thousand times, that is the "nice friendly Elite community" that David mentioned in the video, Michael mentioned on the forum and the newsletter mentioned.

Try to live up to that.

I just sacked a worker today for a belittling a new starter about not knowing how things work. Yes it can be frustrating dealing with new people, but you need to show a little understanding towards others. Instead of getting mad how about directing that energy into something positive, and help the new guys.

This sort of thing leads to bullying and intimidation which is not good for anyone and needs to be stopped both online and offline.

@Alien - I totally agree with your comments.

I have been around these forums since the early days of the KS, but I am a PB so I dont know all the Alpha and DDF discussions other than the summaries in the archive and what I have gleaned.

Friday brought a large group of excited people to the game and these forums bringing with it a wide array of feedback. Give it a few days and it will settle down again.

We always talked on these forums about making them a welcoming place. I feel that't got lost a bit. (I was in two minds to use we)

As a father I remember seeing my kids excitement when they first saw the sea when going on holiday, I smiled tolerantly and remembered that they would calm down in a few minutes.

We should rejoice to see this excitement for the game, smile tolerantly and dispense fatherly advice where we can.

Like sacking all the Alpha Testers?
