Alpha is closed, why?

The 200 pound alpha support is closed and they are no longer selling it. Why? I can't see any difference between that and premium Beta except for price. If a new backer wanted to drop 200 instead of 100, why not let them? Or am I missing something alpha's get that no one else does.

The Alpha phase is finished, it is now Beta phase, and Beta will be updated and added to. They needed to start Beta somewhere so chose Alpha 4.04 as a base.
I'm sure they won't say no to £200 instead of £100, but you'll still only get Premium Beta.

Not sure I understand your point. The Alpha backers have been playing / testing ED since December so that was what you got for the extra cash. Now that Beta has come along, Alpha is finished, it straight up doesn't exist anymore so why would you sell something that doesn't exist?

I see it as a level of support, not when the phase started/ended. Seems to me they are ripping some money off themselves should a long time fan discover this project and want to support it more than the 100. Maybe they should have premium beta with a lowest price at 100 and you chose what you want to give. Some rich millionaire that used to love the series might give a whole lot more.

*they most likely will have - they also have better alternatives to help financing FDEV :D

But this is how everything happens in our life. If you missed something then you missed it and there is no way to replay the past. You could have pledged more during KS campaign, however as soon as it was finished - you have no other choice but to buy available items in the store. KS rewards are unique and are given to early backers who supported the game before it was known for sure that it will be released.

For the extra £100, why not purchase an array of interesting Elite t-shirts, pin badges and key rings?

Also, why not enjoy your morning coffee from an attractive Elite Dangerous mug? Nothing says "I love the smell of plasma and singed energy sheild in the morning" more than an Elite mug.
