I lost a T-9 in a similar fashion. I totally underestimated an Asp's ability to harm me and started to low wake only to be shocked that an Asp could mass-inhibit a T-9. By the time I could lock on a system to high wake and wind up the FSD, I was toast. Lesson learned.
In those days, I probably had a smaller shield generator than I carry now but given its hull mass it should either have much better base armor or more cargo capacity. The T-9 is such a lovely, big brute of a ship, it really deserves some love from the perspective of today's game.
