I'm curious as to which of the 2 major planned expansions would you like first?

Personally, I can't wait for planetary landings. The FPS part, and walking around your ships sounds like fun, but as I've seen from the SC hangar, it doesn't actually add all that much game-play.

I can't wait to do fast chases through the canyons of Alpha Centuri 1b.

Planetary Landings for me, as a big fan of Frontier Elite, I need the landings! :D

It will be so cool to blast off a landing pad and accelerate into the blackness of space.

I'm looking forward to FPS as well, I'd love to be able to walk around my ship before take off, it will give a real sense of reality to these ships.

Cheers.

I think that we need to be able to get up and walk about first, since what's the point of going down to the planet if we can't take a stroll?

First person movement for me as I think it will add more game-play initially (until planetside game-play is fleshed out - hunting , etc.)

Agreed, big game hunting is going to be pointless if you can't get out and collect your kill (I can't see fuel scoops working there :D)

Planetary landings first. FPS is going to require lots more testing, Landings we already have in game in a fashion so should be quicker to implement than FPS.

First person gameplay hands down. The interiors of ships and probably even space stations will be already there on launch, and I think interaction with our ships from the inside and outisde, as well as first person interaction with each other and NPCs will do MUCH for the overall feel of the game.

Planetary landing and the subsequent gameplay resulting from it, should come later, so FD can make it REALLY good and believable.

I always envisaged PL as being more than just "land at groundside port and sit in ship until you decide to leave", so for me FP has to come first. That said, I think it's going to be much more difficult to implement and could take a lot longer than a port-only landings pack. The latter would open up some grind work options for players such as station-groundside deliveries, which might be an attractive choice for a new player looking to earn some risk-free credits for basic upgrades (and equally another opportunity for theft ;) ).

So, after thinking it through while writing this, my preferred expansion path would be:

  1. Port-only landings mini expansion
  2. FP vacuum-side (taking the time to get it right)
  3. PL with full FP

Edits to remove S's - I'm not intending to shoot anyone!

Chango

Every time I fly past Chango I think, wow that looks beautiful and I can't wait to land there. I can just imagine descending through the atmosphere and taking a good cruise around the watery landscape. Perhaps I can pick up some more fish. Eventually, when FPS comes along, perhaps I can even go fishing :) Maybe they have a shark problem and need a bigger boat.
However, for now, I just want to be able to take a closer look and land there because it just looks fantastic from orbit.

My first post, so... hi! :)

I'm a veteran of Elite & FFE , but I've not yet played Elite: Dangerous (it does look truly brilliant, though). My favourite part of FFE was flying down to planets, seeing the colours of the atmosphere and the emerging, expanding landscape below - so my vote is definitely for planetary landing.

That said, as a 3d developer myself, allowing the player to walk round their Lakon, or across the bridge of their Anaconda sounds *MUCH* easier to do than full-on procedural planets / atmospheres. If I had to bet, I'd bet that 1st person walkabout (of some sort) will come first.

Best Regards

Would like to be able to get out of my ship when i land on a planet - so for me that would be preferred to come first.

Plus i'd like to see if there is a pub on the station.

For me, planet landings all the way. When X Rebirth was being done and they talked about walking about the station etc everyone loved the idea and was looking forward to it. When the game was released they was a mod that allowed you to buy/sell without docking, so I think the walking around the station was just either not as expected or poorly implemented. personally even with the mod (which I didn't download) I enjoyed the walking around, but compare that to Elite Frontier planet landings back in the 90's there is no competition - planet landings all the way for me, then walking around the base on the planet - possibly going outside when on a planet like earth. :)

All is possible in ED....

I've just been thinking to my self, which would be the best development in terms of route, from FD's point of view, amateur programner here .. and come to the conclusion that you probably need the model built first, in order to move the camera around it.

This is just as well, because for me it's PLANETARY LANDINGS ..

Actually I don't care if I can't even land really! As long as I can find the Grand Canyon to zoom through pew pew .. and clouds .. :D

.. but if FD want to allow me to walk around my ship, so I can relax after my tour of the Grand Canyon (powered down in orbit of some celestial object or other) .. even if if I can't get out to explore worlds right away, that's fine by me too

Another vote for PL here.

Supercruising through space and seeing planets, then their rings, oceans, landmasses etc. appearing is always an impressive sight. Imagine the planet detail increasing and increasing as you get closer, picking out mountains, rivers, beaches, vegetation and the likes as you get closer and closer. There have been numerous posts of videos of similarly procedurally generated planets in various threads.

This is what I can't wait for. Getting out and exploring that on foot afterwards would be the next chapter for me.

Either way, I'm chuffed to bits that it's all happening, and happening to the Elite franchise! :D

I think the big game hunting example was perhaps an off the cuff remark, something that might be possible. I've never really thought much of those hunting games, or walking simulators if you will. I think there could be many more exciting things to do. We have heard about the possibility of systems changing allegiance. Imagine having to fight your way through a fighter screen around a space station or planetary base, then landing and having to fight your way to a control room to ensure control of the station is complete. I would find that more fun than popping some poor animal in the head with a hunting rifle.

I'd prefer to avoid FPS mode if at all possible, since I'll be wearing a Rift and don't want to try to switch from a X-55 to another controller without being able to see (or taking the Rift off every time I need to switch).

I'm not really super interested in non-ship based gameplay, but I think seamless planetary landing is hella cool. Provided there's something to do when you've landed.

But I'm thinking we'll get walking around first, since that gates more options for what can be done planetside.

Definitely planetary landings for me. This won't just be spaceports on the ground to land and repair and trade, but we will have procedural landscapes of entire planets, atmospheric combat at all altitudes, and trading between different places on the same planet by means of suborbital flights.:D
