Ok it's Sunday, the weather outside is lovely, I've got nothing doing for the rest of the day, so... perfect day to start a forum poll :)

Prompted by the responses in This thread re This video.

Do you think Capital class ships need a bit of a buff?

For:
Right now they are incredibly vulnerable once their escorts are down. They are not the terrifying behemoths that they really should be. The Imperial Interdictor in the video only has 3 hardpoints that are actualy any threat (the heavy rail drivers on upper surface), but these are easily destroyed. The rest of the hardpoints aren't even as effective as the weapons on a station. These ships should be the pinnacle of human military might, the Thargoids are going laugh at us if we go to war with these things!

Against:
Its a game and having fun with a cap ship in a combat zone or elsewhere should be open to every cmdr not just those in engineered superships. If they were like mobile stations with super accurate heavy hitting weapons, nobody would stick around/survive long enough to see how awesome they are, they'd show up in a combat zone and everyone would run or die.

Options:
-Buff the basic weapon damage to similar levels to that of a station, both in accuracy and damage.
-Buff the deployed fighter escort to match the firepower of the upcoming player launched fighters.
-Give the capital ship some shields!
-All of the above
-No they're fine, just leave them alone.
-Nerf them, I want to be able to scare off a capital ship with a stock sidey!

Poll will be up shortly...

Definitely need a buff. You can incapacitate an imperial interdictor with a few well placed railgun salvos at its generator which basically switches off the ship. Not sure about the fed cap ships as I haven't fought one of those in a while.

Yeah, they need a buff, just like stations received.

At present they look very cool, but once you get past the theatrics, aren't that powerful.

Capital ships are a joke, they should be something you really fear, they are not. Should be like the stations.
I would also like to have voice interaction like with the stations.

The problem with buffing capital ships is that it makes CZs with one either Stupidly easy or a no go area depending on what side you are on.

I would like to see some more engaging gameplay from them, because at the moment its very easy to just nip round and shoot out the heat relays.

I'd say,

more powerful guns. But much slower so they are only a thread to the largest of ships, or people who really can't fly.

Some weaker faster close range turrets to protect the heat relays which will need to be got rid of first.

Improved fighter AI which recognizes when a ship is taking down a heat relay and directs the fighters against the threat.

To make it really engaging and more suitable for wings, make it so you need a class 4 weapon (maybe class 3 cannon/plasma) to damage a cap ship, so you need someone in a large ship and people to keep the fighters off them/ knock out the powerful turrets first.

But they would also need to nerf the ridiculous shield booster engineering first though as that just makes a mockery out of everything in this game as you would just end up with people in modded cutters/corvettes tanking a ship 10x their size.

There is very little in this game that isn't a joke.

Never going to happen FD, do not knwo what engaging game play is...

Some excellent ideas. I especially like the idea of having more intelligent escorts that focus on a ship trying to take out the heat relays. I do share your concerns about ruining combat zone balance if they are given a massive buff.

There is very little in this game that isn't a joke.

Oooh, someone's cranky!

There are problems that need to be addressed sure. But right now the gameplay was engaging enough that after the Capital ship destroyed my AspX, I felt the genuine need for vengance and hauled my combat ship some 27 jumps from Shinrarta to take it. Where so many games I would have just shrugged my shoulders and carried on, Elite made me care.

First they need to maneuver, then they need shielded hardpoints if not full shields. A little more hitting power and more defensive escort AI.

There's been a problem with the interdictors since they first rolled out of supercruise. If you notice, even without super ships their weaponry does minimal damage.

I suspect the damage output was reduced for the launch party (to make Kerrash's appearance on stage interesting and engaging to watch) and post event, they never tweaked it back.

When you see a NPC asp parked off its port beam, getting smashed with the capitals railgun broadside and it doesn't even dint the first shield ring, something is amiss.

I hope once we get bigger ships, those will actually be something to fear. Buffing them to station levels now would b overdoing it though, and make combat zones near unplayable.

The Imperial capital ship needs a major buff the Federation one is fine.

I will not vote because the Federation one is fine.

They both need a buff. They should be intimidating and while it is fun to engage them it should be extremely risky. Possibly reward based off the gun mounts killed not just getting them to run. It should be almost certain death for any small ship. Also you should be engaged by the appropriate gunnery. The capital ships should also beat the hell out of each other visibly and be forced to break off due to that. Possibly just allow us to bring down the shields so that our capital ship can finish them... Just my two cents.

What are these 'capital' ships designed to do? What purpose do they fulfil?
Navies. FDev has not thought out this bit of the ED universe.
Where's the 'Jane's Fighting Ships' for the Fed and Imperial navies?
Fighters, troop transports, battleships, carriers, bombers etc?
Capital ships should be bristling with AA or should have at least a squadron of 12 fighters in permanent combat patrol around it - plus the usual heavy ordnance.
These cap ships cost a fortune to build and they are this weak?!!
Great investment eh?
And where's the military doctrine of combined arms?
...
And players can be admirals? For doing what?
And you can be admiral for both the Feds and the Imps concurrently?
What a joke!
It's bad enough being ascribed a combat rank and not really being up to that level.
...
There's supposed to be a war between the Feds and the Imps. They're going to be complaining to the ship designers for doing such a poop job!
These caps ships are paper tigers and are not going to last in a small little conflict zone never mind a full-fledged battle.
And who are the ships' designers? FDev of course!

They should do more to them, structural damage and such not just silly exposed heat vents as for a boss fight that stands still and does nothing.

- Give their broadside weapons with which they shoot each other more range. So silly how they have to engage into a knife fight, they should be like 10km apart from each other.
- Allow them to actually move and maneuvre.
- Yes, they should definitely have shields, probably 6 independent shield sections (front, aft, top, buttom, left, right).
- Instead of rewarding a player who drives them into a retreat, reward them for destroying any component individually.
- Stop capital ships from kill stealing. Right now they are a hindrance and annoyance when on your side.
