Newcomer / Intro A few things I've learnt...for the benefit of other new players

I guess I've been playing for about a month or so now, and I've learned a lot, most of it supported by some good advice from these forums. There are a couple of things I've learned though that don't get such frequent mentions on here, so I thought I'd have a bit of a ramble on in the hope that I can help some other newcomers.

Firstly, keyboard and mouse v. HOTAS. Many threads on here strongly recommend a HOTAS, so I bought one a couple of days in (First lesson, don't buy a used one from Cex, it malfunctioned yesterday and I got trashed in combat as a result. New one on its way) I struggled with it at first - not the flight control, but all those buttons! Big difference is that you can SEE the keyboard - it's easy enough to remember "L" for landing gear, and easy to find it. I confess I gave up and went back to KB and mouse - and I would still say that for flight it's just as good. However, there's a big problem with the KB - it needs you to take one hand off the controls to, for example, boost power to system for shield repair - and it just isn't quick enough in combat. Exactly why there's all those buttons!

Next, and following on from the above, combat. At my age (pushing 70) I believed that combat was not for me - and I was assured that you can play the game pretty much without it. Well maybe you can, but, if you do you're missing out on the most challenging and most fun element of the game in my opinion. NOT PvP, I hasten to add - I'd stand a snowball in hell's chance of competing with some hyped up teenager with the reaction speed of a mongoose - but against NPCs. You can, of course, run away, and I had a degree of success with this (thanks again to great advice from these forums) but after a while it got to be frustrating - who likes running away from some computer generated bad- when maybe - just maybe - you could turn round and wipe his butt? Give it a go - it's the best fun I've had with a game for ages.

Next piece of advice relates very much to the above - if you're going to try combat then do it in a cheap ship, an eagle or a viper - NOT in your fully upgraded Cobra MkIII - the advice often given on here to make all your mistakes in the sidewinder is very relevant.

The learning curve for this game is truly daunting - it just doesn't seem to level out, and to be honest if I'd had an appreciation of exactly how much needs to be taken on board then maybe I wouldn't have started - but I'm glad I did, because the rewards are definitely worth the effort.

Lastly (for the moment) DO have a look at, and get to grips with, the "module" function in the RH UI panel. I didn't, to my cost, and suffered another trashing when all my systems failed as I initiated combat. I won't attempt an explanation myself, there's far better than I could manage already out there.

That's all for now, folks, if any of this proves useful to anyone just starting the game then please let me know.

+1 virtual rep as apparently I need to spread it around a bit first.

I've been looking to fine-tune my KB&M settings as I've gone along and been watching a few videos on it.
Based on my previous reply to one of your threads Wow! post #12 I have changed my throttle settings (on the mouse click wheel) from CONTINUOUS to 12.5% so movement up or down will now increase or decrease the throttle by 12.5%. Continuous was just too slow and had setup some hotkeys for throttle to 25/50/75/100% (with shift as the -25%, etc.) but that requires hands off. So far am finding combat with the 12.5% setting better without having to remove my hand off the mouse. I chose 12.5% (instead of 10%) because generally you need 75% in supercruise when nearing a station.

Now I am also contemplating changing the power settings from the cursor keys to 1 (SYS),2 (ENG),3 (WEP) & 4 (RESET) based on another video I have seen and for the the specific problem you mentioned - having to take my hands off the mouse to change the power settings.
Just need to decide which keys to map to that were previously assigned to 1,2,3,4 (UI focus keys).

So my major settings are now setup as follows:
Mouse: Pitch & Yaw.
Mouse wheel up/down: Throttle Up/Down
Mouse side thumb buttons first/second: Thrust forward/backward
Q/E: Roll Left/Right
W/S: Thrust Up/Down
A/D: Thrust Left/Right

Throttle increment: 12.5%

Tab: Boost (default) although another said he found Spacebar better as he could use the left thumb for that.
Z: Flight Assist (default)
X: Throttle to zero (default)
C: Chaff
V: Heatsink (default)
B: Shield Cell Bank

Contemplating:
1: SYS
2: ENG
3: WEP
4: Reset

Then everything required for battle is within easy reach of the left-hand. Just require a few extra fingers. [where is it]
Maybe that will be new feature in 2.2 with the Thargoid outfitting screen. [alien]

Great observations, Touchwood.

We tend to forget how even the basics are sometimes difficult to grasp for a newcomer. [up]

This game demands a lot from a newbie. Proof? We have 160 page manual that only covers the most basic things and hours of tutorial videos.
So I'd very much like to second the sentiment of taking it slow, but also never giving up. It's too much fun in the end.

If you have problems in the station/mail slot, hit escape and log to desktop, you will be in space when you log back in.
1st time you try to leave the station in a big ship, can be a trial!

You MUST learn to dock manually.

I can but I choose not to. I generally fly in through the mailbox and then engage DA when I'm near my pad cos I like the whole - lining up with the slot and dodging traffic - part but the fiddly bit right at the end I honestly can't be bothered with.

When it's one of those orbital platforms I usually just engage DA as soon as I'm cleared to dock since it's a total pita finding out where my pad is. Yeah - I'm lazy - sue me :p

Thx for the adv, Touchwood. GTK about the learning curve, "not leveling out," sets expectations. I'm not young either. And I'm awaiting the arrival of my T.Flight HOTAS X, I had the advantage of browsing PC Gamer reviews for them, this one was the only recommended 'budget' model. The other recommended model was the Thrustmaster Warthog and Saitek X-55 Rhino, but it's $400. US, not a good idea when I'm not 100% positive that I will use it $400.-worth, and we couldn't afford it now even if I was (I might try ebay eventually).

Can't sue you I am lazy myself, the only reason I am not using one myself is that I am greedier than I am lazy and stingy besides.
