Newcomer / Intro So I want an Anaconda...

funny, I tried that in my ASP, but never ever got an interdictor to fly into the mines, so after ten interdictions (one of it lethal), I switched back to lasers

It's mines, they don't move so you need to put them directly between you and the attacker.

Yeah, I get discretion being the better part of valour, mate but I know I'm going to miss that feeling I get from "Oooh some nice fellow is hauling me out of hyperspace. I wonder what he wants. It must be very important. What's that? You want my cargo? Why yes of course let me see what I have for you. Oh it must be your lucky day, I have a couple of tons of full metal jackets, free to a good home. What's that? You don't want my cargo after all? Well make up your mind, sir, I'm a busy man. Hello? Didn't your mother tell you it's rude to explode when people are talking to you?"

What I'm looking forward to now is Sinistar yelling "RUN COWARD" and me running away with my tail between my legs. Intellectually this makes perfect sense but my inner yeti doesn't speak common sense and he's going to be none to happy, I can tell ya

That's fine and all once you have your A-rated, Engineer modified and armed Anaconda :D yeah, NPCs drop like flies for me. Just don't get ahead of yourself. Search my name and you will find posts where I discuss using mines against NPC pilots. Great fun!

Yup, you have to turn and pitch to line your target up DIRECTLY behind AND LEVEL WITH your own ship. Useless to drop the mines if the NPC just flies above or below them, it took a little while to figure that one out. NPC pilots fly STRAIGHT and LEVEL towards you. If an NPC is directly behind and level with you and you drop mines, the NPC pilot will fly right into them, his shields will drop and you can turn into and burn him down. Note that when his shields drop he may turn and try to run away and recharge them but will return if you do not chase him down and destroy him.

I found, when I started using mines was that while I was lining up my targets directly behind me I was not paying attention to their difference in Z-axis. If they are flying (behind and) above or below your own flight path, you must maneuver so that your intended target is both directly behind and exactly level with your own vessel, or when you drop your mines the target will fly right over or under them. You also need to designate your target before dropping the mines. I am not sure if that step is mandatory but it seems logical. When dropping mines, don't skimp on the mines! Sometimes they will do ALL the work for you! Also, do not drop a couple of mines and wait to see what they will do, the feedback delay is too long and you will never get his shields down. Drop 8 or 10.

Short checklist for defeating NPC interdictions using mines:

When interdicted, immediately submit. Saves time (I'm working on a deadline) and shortens FSD cool-down time.
Set pips to ENG, boost once (gains some distance, decreases chance of direct attack), designate target, deploy hard-points.
Line up your target directly behind and level with your own vessel.
Drop 8-10 mines as fast as you can (2 less for Sidewinders, etc., 4 more for Annies, FDLs, etc., your mileage may vary). Boost again to stay out of his WEPS range.
Monitor the depletion of your target's shields. When they drop the NPC may try to run away to recharge them. If you do not chase him down and destroy him he will just come back, so:
Set pips to WEPS, turn into him and burn him down with multi-cannon and laser fire. Scan destroyed ship debris for interesting/valuable cargo.
Leave, quickly before the cops show up and blunder into one of your mines, putting you on a bounty.
Open your transactions tab and smile reading your list of un-collected bounties.

EDIT: If you drop a bunch of mines and he flies right by them it is probably a good idea to boost, spool up the FSD and fly away to figure out what went wrong rather than try and fight it out. Just saying . . .

^ This. I just waxed a Novice Eagle with mines in my Cobra (fwiw, my combat rank is still Harmless) - it was a different interdiction than what I've dealt with in the past because a) he interdicted me while I was scooping, and b) he was the first one who could even sort of keep up with me while I was boosting. I found it helped to have some distance between you and your attacker (this may be a Cobra-specific thing, as I have the launchers on the small hardpoints that are far apart). But so far I haven't had to fire a single shot from my lasers - the mines have done all of the work for me. And I've killed about a half dozen or so NPC interdictors.

Status update: I've hardly been playing ED all week but I finally got round to buying an ASP-X, kitted out to Ranualf's spec (substituting a docking computer for the 4t cargo rack of course) and just transported 10million cr worth of poop from Ceos back to the bubble. Unique poop that cannot be replaced apparently.

I am the poop master. Fear my mad poop skillz!

Great name for your ship: "Dookie". A docking computer in an Asp? Seems wasteful, you do not need a Docking Computer to park an Asp, aim for the middle and stick it in. That's a quarter million in cargo you're tossing over he side every run. If you need a DC now, wait until you get into an Anaconda!

Have to admit, yeah the asp is a lot easier to land than the cobra. Forgot to install the DC to begin with and had to manually land the first trip out and what a difference being able to look down makes. I'm lazy, tho. Very lazy. Too lazy to look down, that's for sure [big grin]

To dock with ships with restricted downward vision just fly inverted so that the pad is above you as you approach keep flying "up" towards it until the scanner changes mode then roll so the landing gear can touch the pad.

Wow, sounds like you've had some early success trading with the Asp Ex outfitted to trade. I outfitted for exploring, spent almost a week out there and made barely 2 mill! Might reconfigure it after my next exploration trip and do a bit of trading myself.

Something I've noticed is it pays to hang around Ceos/Sothis and wait on big paying missions to come up. Like when I first arrive at Ceos there might only be one or two missions for a couple of mil each but that only fills a quarter of my hold so I'll accept these but then grab a couple of boom data runs to Sothis. When I get to Sothis there might be another couple of of missions for a couple of mil each so I'll pick these up (hold now half full) and grab a couple of data missions back to Ceos. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Eventually I have a full hold worth about 10 mil. Then I change into my lucky long distance trousers and set sail for the bubble.

On a side note - is there anywhere in the bubble that regularly offers high credit missions back out to Ceos? Seems a waste having to slog all the way out there with an empty hold.

In Ceos/Sothis in order to fill up on missions you need to log/spam the mission boards. Also, the good (lucrative) missions do not start showing up until you are ALLIED with the local factions. I also split my time (so I do not get too bored) between Ceos/Sothis/Bubble and a nice little Federation-REP building circuit I have set up back in the bubble, as I am currently grinding FED rank. As I run that circuit some of my stops are in places that sell rare commodities. Mansfield Orbiter for instance, sells Indi Bourbon. I buy up my limit on the way through, sometimes I pass through 3 or 4 times before heading back out to the sticks. If there are other places selling rares on my way out to C/S (I have all rares locations bookmarked in the GM) I stop off and buy my limit. In this way I can make another million or two and not have to dead-head out to C/S. Note: It is not worth taking time waiting in order to try and fill your hold with rares for C/S, you can make more credit faster by simply running the C/S/B and hauling a big cargo of rares greatly increases your risk of interdiction. Grab what is available an move on. PS: Selling rares builds REP as does selling exploration data!

The fastest way to become allied with the local factions at C/S is to run all the data missions you can get between Ceos and Sothis. The smaller Asp is actually better for this part than an Annie because of its ability to run missions to Sothis Mining which does not have a large landing pad. Note: Don't run between Newholm and Sothis Mining, it takes too long. Run missions from New Dawn to Sothis Mining, then back to New Dawn, then out to Newholm, back to New Dawn, etc. keeping New Dawn as the center point.

Once allied with the local C/S factions more lucrative missions will begin to be offered with long-range cargo delivery missions from different factions often going to the same systems, even the same stations depending on your mission choices and stacking. I usually wind up with at least 2 destination systems since I am usually hauling around 360 tons of cargo and sometimes even find myself simultaneously hauling cargoes for two factions who are at war with each other. After running a few laps with the Asp you will probably start thinking very seriously about an Anaconda.

After just being interdicted and pretty much instagibbed with half a hold full of unique, irreplaceable poop, I'm thinking about switching back to the bleeding MKIII. My rage is the kind of rage they write songs about. An epic, teeth ground down to the gums kinda rage. So I've tried running away now and I don't like it. Doubly so when the guy I'm trying to run away from has longer legs than me [mad]

You could also give Diamondback Explorer a go. With a tinsy bit of engineering, she's like a Cobra on steroids. :)

Or, if you don't mind looking all fancy and stuff, give Orca a go. Hellishly fast, surprisingly nimble for a ship of her size (beaten only by a Clipper) and if you don't mind people seeing your cargo through the sun roof, she's one hell of a smuggler/mission runner/rare trader

Orca looks nice but I don't think I could live with a 20 foot jump range :| and the DB doesn't have enough cargo space to make it worth my while. I'm pretty much committed to nursing my butthurt. The fact that I'm up 40-odd million even with the insurance kinda helps take the edge off. Another 4 or 5 weeks by my estimation and I'll be sitting in a conda daring those pesky assassins to look at me the wrong way

Heheh, it's okay. Sometimes we need to savour our butthurt. :D

For these long range missions, you need to make your ship as fast as possible. Always submit and immediately boost. The distance you can get from your enemy will reduce any damage. Something like this:
