Hi all!

I'm just wanting to gauge how much interest there would be in a little side project i'm undertaking at the moment. I've made a program that'll extract the entirety of the Kickstarter comments and i'm thinking to compile them into one document for the perusal of the community in years to come :)

It'll take a few hours to run and be quite a long doc so will require a bit of time to get right. Before i get under way, are people actually interested in seeing it or will i be wasting my time? ;)

I'm thinking to leave it as intact as possible, although i may run through and take out some of the obviously irrelevant stuff! (104k total comments at last count!). I'll probably also wait until the KS deadline is reached to catch the celebrations at the end :D

Let me know what you think!

Sam

Well it is part of the history of Elite. Years ago many sites used to contain lots of irrelevant info and other tid-bits of info concerning the series. So if you really want to do it, then yea why not! :)

I suspect someone would love to use it as research material for their master's thesis. Some sort of a sociological study, perhaps...

Not every comment is worth to read it (mine definitely), but there's lots of highlights, so why the heck not. It's not that much work.

I'd like to see it, but may I suggest something that would make it so much better, but would mean more work for you ...
Organise the comments by subject. For example, there are :
general chat,
questions asked and answered by Michael or David,
all the silly stuff we did like :
Star Wars quotes
HHG2TG quotes
Monty Python quotes
some parody songs.

I think you get the idea. If you group the comments like that, it would be so much better than ploughing through everything that was said.

Just my suggestion, take it or leave it.

If you extracted the comments into a spreadsheet, they would be easier to tag and then they would be easy to find / filter / something

Not only have I no idea how to do that, it is not me that wants to do it. As has been said, Andrew Winter is already putting all the comments into a PDF, I thought this would give the OP something to make his comments collection more unique.

Like I said, it was a suggestion

Yep, this combined with Alien's suggestion of highlighting various interesting themes (quotes, q&a's, milestones in pledges) was something i was planning :)

Didn't realise Andrew was logging the comments as well... i'll drop him a line and see if we're going to end up duplicating work lol (unless he's here watching right now...)

I'll admit i do tend to write these kind of programs more to see if i can than anything else ;) but its been a fairly good response so far, so think i'll give it a shot!

Sorry, by 'you' I meant the OP not the 'you' that I was quoting from.

sigh, it's been a long year...

Not for me thankyou! Life's too short. Don't stop on my account though, I think some folks will definitely be interested.

Cheers,

Drew.

I think it will be pointless. But your call.

However I would say that a spread sheet is the wrong solution. It's as wrong as you can get. A straight text file would be a better bet.

But use a database. And a proper one.

So, go hunt down Postgresql and use that. Then you can spend time turning one long comment stream into 'threads' and chucking out the stupid useless comments.

You'll take 120k comments and come out with 1000 comments worthy of keeping. And in a years time you'll have less again.

It might be worth it just to document the rise of the expression to Jonty!
Which I think we can all agree is a safe bet to be in the game :)

Cassius,

I've already written something that scrapes all the comments into a markdown document if you want it.

I've not yet run it for the required 40 mins though.

I was wondering how large a book it would make if printed at Lulu.com.

Its a pity we cant just rip the whole thing off as a PDF ,,

Hey Synchromesh!

I was planning to make it into PDF, but I've just had a couple of huge projects dumped on me at work so the next 6 months at least I'll be otherwise engaged.. (gotta catch up from my KS slacking period too :D )

But if anyone wants my comment database, I've extracted the comments to an escaped text file...

Edit:
FYI I prepared this data file for Andreas M on this forum, so he's obviously got plans for it too..

Let me know if I can do any more to help!

Andrew
