I don't think it's the 'private' groups that kill open play.
There are reasons why some people avoid open.
You only need a few pk's, griefers and gankers to poison the well.
But I think many still play open.
This galaxy is so mindbogglingly huge that you can play for a long time without seeing other cmdrs. That is the nature of Elite.
But if you go to certain areas or join certain activities like CG's you are bound to meet others.
I still see CMDRs around, and lots of them in the most popular CGs
But yeah, I wish there were real incentives to play open versus solo, but I believe Frontier committed themselves to making all gameplay modes 'equal'?

You say that but Sandro did say he is open to some incentives for open play PP. In-fact I believe it's coming pretty soon.

I'm all for incentives... As long as there isn't Open-only content.
1.5 multiplier on trade profits in Open? Sure, I can live with that.
But that's not stopping the same gameplay with standard rewards in Solo.

Yea alright, glad we agree on that. Some people think that adding incentives to open would not make them equal or whatever.
FD uses open because in some instances they haven't got an alternative. like with the meetings of the 3 characters of the "hunt".
but indeed, a few rotten apples in the barrel have pushed a lot of players out to group and solo. Heck I still remember when I came back from my first exploration trip in an unarmed hauler, being interdicted by a cmdr while flying in open...

The "grenade" he threw in to a Powerplay Undermining thread was - as he admitted just that - a knowingly contentious possibility without guarantee of either actual implementation nor timescale.
