Atypical disrupted wake echoes, am I doing something wrong?

I need one of these for an FSD upgrade. I've been sitting outside of a space dock in a boom system for about 25 minutes scanning every wake signal. So far nothing. I'm using a wake scanner. Am I doing something wrong?

Find a busy system. Or login and out again, this refreshes the instant and you can have new echoes quicker.

Thery're about as common as sand. I get them very often when scanning outside a station. In fact I ejected a bunch to free up some space. Can't imagine why you're not getting them, try another system and another station.

why settle for a level 1 upgrade?

Do 3 lvl 1 upgrades with this engineer that you do have the materials for. Shielded FSD uses nickel, or upgrade another module. You don't have to keep the modification.

The best way is to work out what you need so that you can do three upgrades of each level to get to level 5. Then you just keep the level 5 - or whatever level the engineer goes to or the max you have the materials for.

For instance. I unlocked Juri last night. On my way there, I picked up 50 tons of CMM composite, HN shock mounts and magnetic emmitter coils. When I got there I quickly burned through levels 1 to 3, then upgraded 6 mine layers to level 4, all with experimental effects. This meant dropping two levels 6 times, but I planned what I could do with the materials and data that I already had.

That's what it was, data storage... When you do the upgrade it goes through these bar graphics and asked if you want to accept it. Is there a tutorial on what this means? I'm just trying to get as much jump range of possible but I don't know what The graphs mean

To keep it simple because I'm about to go to bed, the only one you want to look at for FSD range mods is the optimised mass and bigger = better. The other things are all negatives but it doesn't matter if your drive becomes 2 tons heavier if the optimised mass that it can jump increases by 50 tons, you're still going a hell of a lot further. The percentage by which it increases is close enough to a simple percentage of your current jump range that it's the easiest way to get a handle on what it means, so if your jump range before modding is 20 LY and you roll a 10% increase, you're basically going to increase your range to 22 LY assuming that you keep the same gear on the ship.

If you have the stuff to do a few rolls, it's worth banking one that seems OK by applying it but then rolling a few more to see if you can improve on it. If you get crap rolls, you can just discard them and keep the one you already applied. There's nothing worse than having the stuff for five rolls, getting an average one first and discarding it, then rolling the remaining four and they're all crap, meaning that you have to accept the last one no matter what it's like or wait until you have some more stuff to try again.

Thanks! I went back and maxed out the 1st level optimum mass. Now I just got to find some Praseodymium for the next step. Seems I have everything for step 3.

You don't need to do each one in seqence by the way. Just have a look through all the things your engineer can do, find some level 1 mod that only needs something simple like nickel that you have a lot of and get her to do loads of them. Just keep rolling the mod on the same piece of gear - it doesn't matter whether it's something you actually want or not, just roll, try again, roll, try again. I can't remember how many it will take but just do 'discard' and check your rank with her (assuming it's Felicity) every few rolls, you'll hit rank 3 fairly fast and then you can just do the rank 3 mod without needing to have done the 2.

Alternatively if you have the stuff for any of her mods at level 2, just do the same as above, three level 2 mods (no matter which mnodthey actually are) will get you rank 3.
