Base Raiding with spacelegs (TM)

Did a few raids on bases, however as fun as they are, I can't stop wondering how it will be if I could walk out of my SRV and get into the base.

Would it be like Alien Isolation? scary dark, need to use your brain to get access to areas and extract information? Or will it be like a boots on the ground combat type of fighting your way through until you reach the area of interest?

I hope it will be a combination, some could lean more one or the other side.

Hopefully it's fun and exciting.

Running down procedurally generated hallways guns blasting for fat loots sounds like fun to me.

Did you used to play Dust514? Had a Lysander in my Corp southern legion

Yeah I did that, don't know if it was me though :)

Actually I'd prefer more creepy, eerie, and hidden stuff than a lot of pew-pew.

Yes I like that too, and maybe we can have both mechanics, like finding a ruin or abandon base / building = creepy
Raid a base to extract information or conquer it = combat action.

I have mixed thoughts on this.

On one hand, I would enjoy exploring some dark, creepy, atmospheric ruins of a station, outpost, ship, etc. Finding data/intel caches, or small items to keep/trade in inventory. But I'm sure walking will be designed with combat focus, like most other aspects of Elite (or any other game with walking).

And on that other hand, I am *not* really interested in playing FPS combat shooter like Unreal. At least not at this point. The idea of running/strafing with a multi-cannon, having a "health meter" and picking up "healing kits", and respawning back in my ship just seems kind of strange in Elite.

But if they do come to this, either way I'm sure I'll give it a try.

We could have both.

Health kits would be dumb unless it's an ammo you have to buy

I would like to see a multidimensional battlefield:

  • Capital ships in orbit above a planet, with fighters duking it out around them
  • Meanwhile drop ships of various types are flying to the planet surface, loaded with tanks and troop transporters
  • On the ground, the tanks and troop transporters head towards the objective (e.g. a starport)
  • The troops are disgorged from the transporters, mopping up the stragglers, taking out the stubborn resistance cells
  • All the while fighters such as Eagles provide air cover or fly air superiority missions

In essence the current combat zones would extend down to the planetary surface. Of course the chances of it happening are beyond remote I would hazard to guess.

The Alien Isolation sneak around missions I would be quite happy to do on the larger ships. I am thinking of christening my T7 Nostromo :)

I think there should be room for both stealth mechanics and shooting stuff.

Hopefully when you get out of your SRV on an 8G world you just collapse and have to crawl on the floor.

That would be great, however use of exoskeleton is use in ED so maybe there is hope :)

Yes, the health should make sense, I like the Arma medic pack, and other similar games ways of dealing with it.
No health bar, use heartbeat monitors or something else.

I would love for there to be multiple ways to approach this. You could be a lone, stealthy, Sam Fisher type infiltrator for example. Or you could go in loud with a tactical team made up of other players.

Planetary bases are fairly bare bones at the moment. I feel like they would have to be beefed up quite a bit before we'll be able to really explore them on foot.

Surface Combat Zones would be really cool. Maybe with stages for example, in stage 1 the combat is deep space with capitals and support ships, one side needs to defend the support capital ships and the other side needs to destroy them. Stage 2 around orbit near surface where transport and troop ships fly to the surface and stage 3 surface combat with SRV, ships, base infiltrations and bombardments.

You know what would combine passenger missions and space legs in an interesting way?

Troop deployment/extraction missions. Fly to a contested area on the surface and drop troops off in an LZ (hopefully marked by a surface waypoint, a beacon, or at least smoke). Or fly in and pick them up under fire, holding the enemy off with turreted weapons while they board.

"Extraction confirmed! T-minus one minute, thirty seconds!"

I wonder how they'll handle/explain the death mechanic once we get space legs.
Since you're out of your ship, there's no magic escape pod to eject and save you.
